Exit Polls: Indiana, North Carolina Latest Information

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/14/08 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:30 PM ET

Exit Polls

UPDATE, 6:05 PM: Another round of exit polls has better results for Obama (who generally overperforms in exit polls):

Indiana

Obama: 50.5%

Clinton: 49.5%

North Carolina

Obama: 60%

Clinton: 38%

Here's a glance at the first round of exit polls, which are notoriously unreliable:

Hillary is up by a margin of 7 5 in Indiana

Obama is up by a margin of 12 in North Carolina

The Associated Press has released information on early exit polls:

WORRIED ABOUT THE ECONOMY

The economy was on voters' minds in Democratic primaries in Indiana and North Carolina. Two-thirds of Democratic primary voters in Indiana and nearly as many in North Carolina said the economy is the most important issue facing the nation. That's more than have said so in 28 previous competitive Democratic primaries with exit polls this year.

Only about one in five in each state said Iraq was the top issue, and even fewer picked health care from a list of three issues.

Four in 10 Indiana Democratic voters said the current recession or economic slowdown has affected their family a great deal. Nearly as many said that in North Carolina.

CROSSOVER VOTING

Indiana's Democratic primary was open to all voters. About one in five said they were independents and one in 10 identified themselves as Republican. North Carolina's Democratic primary was open only to voters registered Democratic or unaffiliated; nearly one in five voters in that contest called themselves independents.

DEMOGRAPHICS:

The exit poll estimated blacks made up about a third of voters in the North Carolina Democratic primary, about one in seven in Indiana. More than half of voters in both states were women, which is typical for Democratic primaries. About one in seven voters in Indiana and slightly fewer in North Carolina were under age 30; about a quarter in North Carolina and somewhat fewer in Indiana were over age 65.

Clinton Losing Support Among African-Americans: From CNN's Political Ticker:

In Indiana where African-Americans made up 14 percent of the voters, Obama won 92 percent of that demographic while Clinton only got 8 percent. That compares to 13 percent of the African-American vote Clinton won in Ohio and the 10 percent she received in Pennsylvania two weeks ago.

Clinton's African-American support was even less in North Carolina. There Obama received 91 percent while the New York senator only received 6 percent.

Democratic Crack-Up?: Marc Ambinder comments on the apparent polarization within the Democratic party:

Forget the horse race numbers for a moment: if the surveys are accurate, the polarization within the Democratic Party has reached critical levels. Nearly six in ten Obama supporters in Indiana say they would be dissatisfied if Clinton were the nominee -- that's (I believe) the high percentage of Obama supporters who have ever said that.

In both IN and NC, two thirds of Clinton supporters say they'd be dissatisfied if Obama were the nominee -- I believe that's the highest number recorded for that question, too.

The percentage of Clinton voters who say they'd choose McCain over Obama in a general election is approaching 40% in Indiana. Put it another way: in North Carolina, less than HALF of folks who voted today for Hillary Clinton are ready to say today that they'd definitely vote for Obama in a general election.

Clinton Viewed As Attack Dog: CNN reports that exit polls show Clinton is being viewed as having attacked Obama unfairly:

Voters in both states were asked if they thought either candidate has attacked his or her opponent unfairly.

In Indiana, 63 percent of Democratic voters said Clinton attacked Obama unfairly. That compares 43 percent who said Obama attacked unfairly.

In North Carolina, two-thirds of Democrats say Clinton attacked unfairly whole 40 percent of Obama did.

He claimed a couple years ago he'd serve his full term in the Senate without a thought of running for higher office.
Who told this guy he's the best thing since bottled beer?

Heh-heh, poor pathetic Repugs trotting out their old haircuts and thinking they look cool.

Right trolls, people still care about Rezko, Wright, Ayers, kindergarten papers, "present" votes...and I hear his middle name is Hussein!

You guys are so clueless. What next, you'll be prancing around in disco shoes thinking how "hip" you look?

Obama just won the nomination tonight DESPITE all that meaningless BS, it's old news. Please, base McCain's strategy on winning on those tired topics...PLEASE!

LOL!

I love the pulling out the old vote questionnaire card re the Iraq war funding and claiming it means something. And whizzer still pretending he's a Clinton supporter and that he doesn't have at least 4 other socks.

It's such a laugh! Like anyone here either cares about their bonehead obsessions or isn't aware of their pretenses.

Like the cat with its head under the bed thinking that since it can't see anything, no one can see it.

Congratulations Senator Obama, soon to be President Obama.

Hillary may still limp on but her days are numbered, since "The Family" is being released May 20th.

Deconstruct your post and it will all make sense. Shall I help?

"They FLUSH pro-Clinton comments here down the SHITTER..."

So, what analogy would apply to what you see as pro-Clinton comments, by your own admission?

Hint: What is FLUSHED down the SHITTER?

You're so funny, you describe your own posts as excrement! LOL

You have no idea how the media works.
I meant exactly what I said.
You are gleeful to receive censored viewpoint that has you thinking Obama will be the nominee and elected without a hitch.

MutualDisdain takes pride in being a liar and fraud. He has an inflated sense of his influence on the world, believes he's responsible for the Democratic Race continuing and for the denigration of the Clintons reputations. He is deluded into thinking that his opinions have influenced people who "disdain" him.

Conclusion: MutualDisdain touches all the bases of someone with mental illness.

It's just typical Republican tribalism. They want so desperately to belong. They want so desperately to think they are part of the ruling class -- a member of the club. They're just pawns of the very rich and the very crooked.
03:25 AM on 05/07/2008
Maybe a combination of both your point and Sanity's. Like many with inferiority complexes, they don't feel they have the power or intellect of others or have traits making them desirable as friends or mates.

So, as misfits, they seek out others with the same discomfort with socialization and bond through the shared resentment of those that intimidate them.

Then, in keeping with their feelings of inferiority, they turn to the internet where they can create false identities that are not as vulnerable and obsess with the influence they can have in virtual situations.

When they're not caught up in their fantasy lives on X-Box, they come to places to chat an pretend they're something not inferior with other people.

Losers and misfits, self-centered liars. The Republican party in a nutshell.

diagnosis? sociopathic antisocial personality disorder: the essential feature for the diagnosis is a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood. deceit and manipulation are considered essential features of the disorder

Hillary also won IN just because of seniors in groups under 65 Obama won by 6 points.
08:55 AM on 05/07/2008
What's your point?

Obama won in NC "just because":

White Democrats (42%) 62% 37% 1%

Is the deciding demographic of one state more meaningful in any meaningful way than the deciding demographic of another state?

Is one form of discrimination and prejudice more important than another?

Obama really won IN if you only consider Democrats and Independents.
02:21 AM on 05/07/2008
And subtract Operation Chaos Repugs.
02:24 AM on 05/07/2008
That's got to be at least 10% of her vote total.
02:17 AM on 05/07/2008
I'm not really an Obama supporter because he's really flaky and transparent. But the more Clinton opens her mouth the more I want to see her defeated. I'm really torn.
06:42 AM on 05/07/2008
when did "transparency" become a bad thing?
02:14 AM on 05/07/2008
People, esp the CNN and MSNBC talking heads are awfully quick to end this campaign. In fact, it is not much closer to over than it was yesterday. The main difference is that Hillary won a state that Obama had considered his back in Feb. Now, his juggernaut has been stopped and it is time to begin to look at what is left.

I haven't done the math, but I know there is a new number. 2025 is no longer operative which was based on 48 states. The number based on 50 states is 2209, which, unfortunately, the media has been lax in reporting but it is being corrected.

The Obama people have enjoyed saying how dumb Hillary's campaign was not to work harder in the caucus states. Now the Obama people are going to find out how dumb the Obama campaign was to take Obama's name off the Michigan ballot. Hillary gets all the delegates from Michigan.

I expect that when all the delegates are finally counted either in June or in August (actually has to be August), that Hillary will have more than the required 2209 and she will be the nominee.

The fact is that their are more super delegates left than pledge delegates. Anyone with half a brain knows the contest is over. Stop trying to bring in races that do not count you are starting to sound like crazy Lanny Davis.

Hillary said that she did not take her name off the MI ballot because the primary did not count. You can call it smart but was just an omission.
02:22 AM on 05/07/2008
I supported Clinton, but it's over.

And the obvious reason is that her strategy was to convince the superdelegates that Obama was fading. But for him to have such a huge victory in NC and basically a tie in Indiana means that that strategy has no merit. She can't win the pledged or super delegates, and can not win the popular vote. Even with Michigan and Florida. It's over, and Clinton supporters need to get to work on beating McCain and every other Republican.

I know it's hard to support Obama if you are a Clinton supporter because this was a very personal campaign. Thanks for supporting Obama it's a very magnanimous of you to help bring back the party together.

I am not a big fan of Hillary like very one knows but this must be a devastating loss for her family. I still appreciate Bill because he was a good president for us and my heart bleeds for Chelsea. Chelsea really looked like she was about to vomit. Bill looked like his blood pressure was hitting the roof. Ironically the Hillary was the only one able to put on a good face.

I think Operation Chaos may have given Hillary IN. 11% of the voters were Republicans higher than any other state than LA. I have to agree with Lawrence O'Donnell on this one.
