WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton lost her last best chance to score an upset on Barack Obama's turf Tuesday, putting the Illinois senator a step closer to becoming the country's first black presidential nominee.

Obama was the long-standing favorite in North Carolina, and he won with the overwhelming support of black voters there despite an intense effort by Clinton to turn the state around.

Obama's victory there was tempered by the fact that Clinton beat him handily among white voters, extending her argument to superdelegates who will decide the nomination that she will be the stronger general-election candidate.

So far, she's been losing that argument.

Even as Obama has been struggling with the fallout over his former pastor's racially divisive remarks, even though Clinton is coming off a big win in Pennsylvania, he's still winning more superdelegates. Since the Pennsylvania primary two weeks ago, Clinton has picked up 11.5 superdelegate endorsements to Obama's 22, according to an Associated Press count.

A win for Clinton in Indiana, the other state that voted Tuesday, wouldn't turn the race around for her like a surprise victory in North Carolina would have.

Obama's win in North Carolina helps stop a slide for him that began two months ago when Clinton won primaries in Ohio and Texas. He got victories in the Texas and Wyoming caucuses and the Mississippi primary, but soon found himself the target of unflattering media coverage spurred by video of his former pastor's divisive sermons.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright has suggested the United States spread terrorism and possibly the HIV virus to kill blacks. Obama at first distanced himself from the comments while embracing the man, but eventually denounced the pastor completely.

Undecided superdelegate Muriel Offerman, of Cary, N.C., said she wondered if the controversy could have cost Obama her state.

"This week I wasn't sure how this was going to shake out because of the Jeremiah Wright thing and because President Clinton had been here so much," she said in a telephone interview from her home, where she was watching coverage of Obama's victory on television. Former President Bill Clinton visited small towns across North Carolina in support of his wife, including nine stops on the eve of the election.

"People want change and I think North Carolina is like some of the other states, that it's just time for a change," Offerman said. But she said Obama's racially lopsided victory "is certainly a concern. And I think we all have our work cut out for us."

Eighteen percent of North Carolina voters casting ballots said race was important in deciding their vote, according to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks. Nearly a quarter of black voters said race was important, and 93 percent of those respondents voted for Obama. Fourteen percent of white voters said race was important, and 60 percent of them went for Clinton.

Offerman said she hopes the candidates will follow through on their promises to support the eventually nominee. She said they will need each other to bring the party together after the racially divisive primary.

White voters outnumbered black voters in North Carolina 2-1. Obama won by 14%, a bigger percentage than Clinton did in Pennsylvania, a state pretty much designed for her.

Meanwhile, six hours after the close of polls, Indiana, with an overhwelmingly white population is too close to call.

This on a night when Hillary HAD to win big.

This after the worst month in Obama's campaign.

This after a month of racial polarization.

Wake up, white people (and yes I am white). Obama is the nominee.

Shorter Nedra Pickler: Obama won big in NC tonight (Rev. Wright scary black man) but it doesn't really count because it was entirely due to racist negroes (Rev. Wright crazy black man). Whereas a lesser proportion of white voters for Hillary admitted race (Obama loves Rev. Wright ) was important to them. Which proves that the negroes (Rev. Wright created Obamat) are up front in admitting that Obama is the racist candidate.

Hillary Clinton = Categorically, Absolutely, Positively, Unelectable.

The numbers don't lie.

It's sad that somehow Rev Wright's talk is more important than sending troops to die over oil. Or that his being a preacher to Obama is worse than our President to his electors. The President has the blood of thousand's on his hands but Rev. Wright thinks our government invented AIDS. CEO's are raping the workers but Rev. Wright is spouting cries of racism. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer but lets blame Rev. Wright. I say who cares about these blue-collar white men. They're partially responsible for the state of our country.

I bet McCain is planning to send Hilary, if he becomes President, to the League of Nations as our Ambassador.

I admire Hillary Clinton's tireless effort to win the nomination. She has shown that she truly has the spirit of a fighter. Yet, the reality is that she has lost. It's now time for us to all work toward putting a Democrat in the White House this November! We can do it if we stick together!

I'd admire Hillary's tireless effort if it were anything but the expression of her rampant ego and inherent sense of entitlement. The race has been over for weeks. Tonight, there's not even the end of a straw left to clutch onto. So expect more smears and race-baiting and Roveian tactics for another couple of weeks.

You know what? 'We' can do this without Clinton.

How does one win a point-five super delegate? Are they that half-assed that they only give 50% of their support?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 PM on 05/06/2008

the Democrats Abroad primary is the reason for the half delegate. Don't ask me how they could come up with such a rule.

Why can't Hillary win the black vote? Why can't she close the deal?

It's odd when you consider that in the beginning people wondered if Obama would get enough of the black vote. The black vote was Hillary's to lose and damned if she didn't. I suppose when one is dismissive towards anyone who isn't for them, people take notice and wonder if it's how you'd treat everyone. The exodus of the black vote may find it's roots in that part of Hillary's character. When I watch how she alienates those who don't necessarily feel disenfranchised, one has to wonder how she'd relate to those who do. Don't get me wrong, this is not an expression of "playing the victim", but simply a matter of extrapolating information about someone's behavior by how they treat others. On top of that, consider they lying, manipulation, misconstruing information... Everything that people find loathsome in another... Things that we warn our children off of... Look there and you'll probably find the reasons why. When people, and in this case, black people see this type of behavior, it sets off red flares. As it should. No?
