SNL Launches "SNL Politics"

Hooray, SNL finally understands the internet! First it was Fred Armisen's blog, then it was the "Laser Cats" video game, and then there was the huge, giant leap of embeddable video, finally bringing SNL into the post-YouTube clip-deleting era of multi-platform online dissemination. Now, they take it one step further with the launch of what is really a whole new site: "SNL Politics," NBC's equivalent of Comedy Central's "Indecision 2008" in its blatant capitalization on popular pre-existing TV material as a vehicle for an online entity. (That last sentence, by the way, is how a wonk takes something funny and makes it sound really, really boring.)

Anyway! SNL Politics picks up where ETP leaves off, namely in dutifully chronicling the political high points of the various shows (Amy Poehler's Hillary! Darrell Hammond's McCain! Fred Armisen's honeyfaced Barack!) plus fun perks, like e-cards, delegate math jokes, "Which Candidate Are You?" and ads for "30 Rock" and "My Name Is Earl." (Corporate synergies, yay!)

The upshot is, of course, brand extension, like "Weekend Update Thursdays" will be (and, presumably, like doing a private live performance of Update on the Thursday night of a show week in front of a room of hyper-influentials), and it's proof that — finally — SNL is getting the web. For political junkies online, that's as sweet a surprise as a lil' something gift-wrapped special in a box.

Laser Cats is absolutely the worst thing I have ever seen. SNL has been irrelevant for many years. I try to give it a chance every few weeks or so but can't make it past 5 minutes.

damn, i wish i had the time to watch, but i'm too busy reading mad magazine's introduction to quantum physics.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:48 AM on 05/10/2008

SNL fights for relevance. remember Lorne, it's quality -- not quantity.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:08 PM on 05/09/2008

Bring back Dana Carvey. Have him play McCain as "Grumpy Old Man"!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:05 PM on 05/09/2008

If it's funnier than this, i will be surprised.

Does anybody watch SNL anymore? I can't remember the last time I watched that train wreck. SNL sort of made sense before, oh I don't know, Dukakis. Since then what have they done but act as a staging point for some of the least funny movie actors in recent memory. Maybe they can get Hillary to post to their site and they call all have a troll-fest, of sorts. Come September, she is going to need a hobby. Sticking pins in the eyes of an Obama doll will only get her so far, then what? Dove Hunting with Darth Cheney?

They made themselves irrelevant a while back with their out of it bits that portrayed Hillary as the poor maligned victim of the media and a pathetically dull Obama. SNL has been living off their reputation for years. But to get things so wrong and warped has I think put the final nail in their long overdue coffin. Since the Tina Fey night of bitch is the new black (how ugly a comment was that) I've not watched SNL again, nor Tina Fey's own TV show.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:29 AM on 05/09/2008

tina fey is as funny as rectal itch.

I normally agree with most comments posted on Huffpost, but on this story, you guys are going to have to lighten up!! Fred Armison is the most talented of the SNL cast. He does a great Obama, as he does with any character he plays. Does anyone remember the hilarious Alberto Gonzales skit? Maybe the show is tilted toward Hillary, but so what! SNL does not profess to be a real News source. Amy Poehler is not a great Hillary, but she's funny. However, I do sorely miss Maya Rudolph. But seriously, everyone just relax and lighten up a little...

Lighten up? Normally I'd agree with that as sometimes it can get really nasty and hateful here. but these comments are just stating the fact that they are unfunny and very pro-Hillary. That's not exactly out-there speech. Perhaps you need a second Starbucks today.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:04 PM on 05/10/2008

they suck...SNL used to be a really good satirical show...now it is a washed up unfunny has been...Jon Stewart and Stephen COlbert are much much better

SNL's clear bias in favor of Hillary didn't work out too well for them.
And Jeez can't they get a better Obama ? He doesn't look or sound anything like the real thing. Since he will be our next prez they should go on a real nation wide talent hunt to find someone cool like Barack. Armisen is a joke, but in a bad way.

SNL is SO in the bag for Hillary Lorne Michaels denies it. Sorry Lorne, we can see through it.
Free campaign ads for Hillary. And the political stuff? Not that funny. Like the dude said, "Bitch may be the new black, but black is the next president."

It's a Celebration.

is this billary's nuclear plan?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:20 AM on 05/09/2008

Hopefully, we won't have to watch Amy Poehler as Hillary too much longer. That is about the WORST impression they've ever had on SNL--the mannerisms are all wrong, the voice is COMPLETELY wrong, and the laugh is nowhere close. If it weren't for the hair and make-up, no one would even have a clue who it was supposed to be.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:07 AM on 05/09/2008

Too bad they aren't funny. Otherwise, this might have been a good idea for them. I will never forgive this show for fooling Americans into thinking Tina Fey is funny.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 AM on 05/09/2008

Too little too late to save Hillary's campaign I'm afraid. Hit the ground running for 2016?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:25 PM on 05/08/2008

Just in time to try to save Hillary's campaign yet again. Now they can spew their pro-Clinton BS 24/7.

YIPPEEE!

I've always been a big fan of SNL, since graduate school at Indiana University in the mid to late 70s. If anybody from SNL is reading these posts, I have an idea for a skit: Recreate the "Thing that Wouldn't Leave" skit only instead of the John Belushi character, you use Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton. Hell, I could write that one and bring the house down, not to mention a good bit of secondary publicity for the show.

Does this mean more BLACKFACE Mister Loren?? .I VOTE YES!!!!!!!(..that is of course if African Americans existed in SNL Country, which we know they don't..ie the need for BLACKFACE..Right?)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:24 PM on 05/08/2008

If I'm not mistaken but Obama is part white too. Sometimes I really think people need to take a step back and count to ten. It's comedy and it's not demeaning to Obama or his African American heritage.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:11 AM on 05/09/2008

He's a better choice to portray Obama than a black actor who doesn't resemble him.

It's sketch comedy, people, not Lanford Wilson.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:52 PM on 05/08/2008

First, Fred Armisen's Obama is weak. Second, Sen, Obama is a man who has chosen to embrace his entire heritage but when asked he never fails to explain that he identifies as African-American. The assertion that You could not get passed an African-American that is not Sen Obams's spittin image, regardless how brilliant the performance is, says more about you than it does about the actor. Besides it apparently doesn't bother you that THEY HAVE TO DARKEN ARMISEN"S SKIN..This is the very definition of BLACKFACE!

Is Lorne Michaels a rabid racist. I am sure he is not. But SNL for quite sometime now has chosen to write from a very narrow cultural and generational perspective.Jesus, they are in Manhattan not Wyoming. They can find diverse talent(writers and actors)if it were a priority. Clearly it is not. The lack of diversity on the show is shameful. Especially for a show that some consider an American Institution.

Lastly, My initial comment was meant to be pithy. But the responses require something more. The time has long passed when another group of people or any individual can stand on the sermon mount and decree what should or shouldn't be OFFENSIVE to another group of people. This is Highly offensive on many levels!!

Here's another point of view (not connected with NBC Universal, Lorne MIchaels or any other mega media corp.):

If SNL can launch a political site, I can launch a knitting site.

Unless it's Justin Timberlake singing D!¢K In A Box as an On Location Reporter.... I have low expectations for this poopfest.
