I can't imagine how the parents handle it, as the video and other comments have noted. But, at the same time the clip didn't indicate negative effects on the child and it does make me wonder what, as an adult, I could accomplish if I didn't need to sleep.

This child has Arnold Chiari malformation (that's what they said on the St. Petersburg station). My daughter has it also and even after two surgeries she still has a problem sleeping. It causes headaches and many other problems. She was diagnosed at 17 after a year of going from doctor to doctor. Anyone who has bad headaches should get an MRI of the spine, especially cervical spine because that is how she was finally diagnosed.

How is this medically possible? Doesn't the body need sleep or something akin to sleep to function, especially a growing child?

I can't even imagine (for once, the reporters said it right).
