Hagee Apologizes To Catholics, But Not New Orleans

John Hagee, the uncontroversial Evangelical pastor who endorsed John McCain, will issue a letter of apology to Catholics today for inflammatory remarks he has made, including accusing the Roman Catholic Church of supporting Adolf Hitler and calling it "The Great Whore." "Out of a desire to advance greater unity among Catholics and Evangelicals in promoting the common good, I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful," Hagee wrote, according to an advanced copy of the letter reviewed by Washington Wire. "After engaging in constructive dialogue with Catholic friends and leaders, I now have an improved understanding of the Catholic Church, its relation to the Jewish faith, and the history of anti-Catholicism."

Scattered thoughts...
1. I do not subscribe to guilt by association. It was wrong to drag Obama into Rev. Wrights politics, and it is wrong to associate Hagee's view with McCain.
2. The media never showed Hagee's attacks on the Catholic Church but they are showing the apology. I believe the media treated Obama poorly and -with the 24/7 coverage of Rev. Wright's rants- it looked like they were intent in making many people angry at Obama and his pastor.
3. I think McCain asked Hagee to apologize so that the "problem" can just go away. His apology is deep and heartfelt, but I do not think he had to repudiate his theology in order to endorse a politician.

Hagee built up a massive media empire over decades making apologies to pretty much no one for who he was and what he said. And now, now he decides to pick up a book or a phone and make a little effort to better understand the role of the Catholic Church in history? This apology may be sincere, but if so, I'm flat out amazed he didn't know any better. What's become of educational standards at the Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas?
