So what is that on Barack Obama's lapel as he speaks at a town meeting in conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's hometown, Cape Girardeau, Mo.?

Why, it's a flag pin!

For the second day in a row, Obama has pinned the Stars and Stripes to his suit lapel. He also wore a flag pin yesterday at an appearance in Charleston, W.Va., in which he spoke about patriotism and veterans issues.

Obama does not typically wear a flag pin on his lapel, in contrast to many politicians who now campaign wearing the symbol. But Obama did wear flag lapel pin briefly last month in Pennsylvania, after he was given one by a disabled veteran.

Critics have targeted his habit of dressing without a flag pin to raise questions about his patriotism.

This real shows how he changes positions as the wind blows. What a Hypocrite and a Suck Ass!!!!!!! Lets do anything to win over the stupid americans. What a lack of leadership and integrity.

Its not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Barack' a Loser on a lot of fronts, this being one of them.

WHAT BETTER WAY ... to prove that costume jewlery is a meaningless measure of patriotrism that to wear it? I love the fact that he defended his patriotism when he chose not to wear it, now he'll be defending his patriotism because he's wearing it.
By the way, what's to keep fascists, communists, terrorists and even neo-cons from wearing a pin? Nothing. In fact, an undercover terrorist would be smart to wear a flag pin -- since the pin seems to be more important to so many people than a man's deeds or what's truely in his heart.
Maybe if the fashion were more, oh, demanding. Like pierced earring flags, or tattoos on the face? Thank God the fashion was never to wear a pig bladder hat with an American flag on it -- imagine how disgusting.

Obama is no different than Hillary. HE IS A POLITICIAN!!! What I am concerned with is decision to now wear the pin is, what"Progressive Ideas" will he compromised when he becomes president to do business with the republican left in congress??

Oh my God, enough with the damn obsession over flag pins. Obama is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He probably did it thinking that maybe it would just make the issue go away, but just like the Wright story, it only goes away when the media gets tired of talking about it. I have an idea, why don't you just publish a calendar with a gold star for every day he wears a flag pin and use a different colored star for when Clinton or McCain wears theirs...Oh wait, only Obama has to prove his patriotism??? Nevermind then.

Why not wear the American flag pin upside down to show the true state of America and its empire: in serious distress and turned upside down? Next a pin with racial/ethnic identity such as CA for Caucasoid, AM for African-American, NA for Native (with blood-quantum clasp e.g. 25% etc) and MR for mixed race. Then perhaps a pin for one's denomination say CA for Catholic, L for Lutheran or M for Methodist, MO for Mormon etc. Then next, a pin for sect such as SB for Southern Baptist or EL for Evangelical Lutheran etc. Next a pin for sexual orientation such as HE for Hetero, G for Gay, L for Lesbian, B for Bi and TG for Trans-Gender. Next, party affiliation such as D, R, I etc. Next, which part of the poltical spectrum L for Left, C for Centrist and RW for Right-wing and F for outright fascist.

Why not get into narrow identity politics in a really big way? Now the suit and pants suit lapels might appear overloaded, but what the hell, now we have not only full disclosure, some will have some definite bragging rights.

This is like the fall of Rome in living color. What a profoundly stupid and full-of-itself culture full of a lot of really stupid and full-of-themselves people.

Coincidentally, tomorrow there'll be just 250 Days of Glory
remaining, for George Bush and the gang.

"Well, today's almost over. And weekdays always go by fast.
Friday we're leaving. It's like two days really.
It's like a cup of coffee. It will go by like *that*!"

Wearing a flag pin now after so eloquently explaining his reasons for refusing to do so earlier, makes him look like a conventional politician. I don't know his reason for wearing one now, but it does give the appearance of pandering to certain voters.

I believe he sometimes wears the one given to him by an Iraq War Veteran. I still don't agree with it, but it is understandable.

Well, of course he'll wear a cheap, tacky flag pin made in China. Hillary's supporters have proven to his campaign the lack of depth they value so dearly.

He might have won W V if only Barack had handed out free cigarettes and dentures.

Flag pin, is this really news? Huff Po is a fluff site. The real stuff is on thinkprogress.org

I thought he was going to wear the 57 state lapel pin. He must be taking heat for not knowing how many states are in the Union. This is so phoney. I an odd way, I wish he would have stuck to his guns and said he does not believe in wearing the pin and would not wear one just because others thought he should. He is very flexible.

Thank god he started wearing that little pin on his chest. For a while, I was really starting to doubt his patriotism. I mean what has he been doing that's patriotic? Besides running for the highest job in the land and promising a better tomorrow for all Americans of course...

/end sarcasm

This is probably the most absurd issue ever concocted by the major media. I'm guessing the Rove factor is behind this one.

It has to come from the heart, for Obama it does not. He would be more comfortable wearing the Anti American flag pin as the all liberals.

The flag pin non-story reminds me of the film "Office Space":

Joanna: You know what, Stan, if you want me to wear 37 pieces of flair, like your pretty boy over there, Brian, why don't you just make the minimum 37 pieces of flair?
Stan, Chotchkie's Manager: Well, I thought I remembered you saying that you wanted to express yourself.
Joanna: Yeah. You know what, yeah, I do. I do want to express myself, okay. And I don't need 37 pieces of flair to do it.
[flips off Stan]
