WASHINGTON — Barack Obama's wave of superdelegate endorsements puts him within reach of the Democratic presidential nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3 _ even if he loses half of the remaining six contests.

The Illinois senator has picked up 26 superdelegates in the past week. At that pace, he will reach the number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination _ 2,025 _ in the next three weeks, when delegates from the remaining primaries are included.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to move the goal posts. She will get that chance May 31 when the Democratic National Committee's rules panel considers proposals to seat the delegates that had been stripped from Florida and Michigan. Those two states violated national party rules by holding their primaries in January and lost their delegates.

"Michigan and Florida are key to it," Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, said Monday.

Obama picked up four superdelegates Monday, including Sen. Daniel Akaka of Hawaii and Rep. Tom Allen of Maine.

Allen, a six-term congressman who is running for the Senate, said the time has come for a "graceful end" to the nomination fight.

"I believe the process of reconciliation, the process of unifying this party, should begin sooner rather than later," Allen said. "It should begin in May and not in June."

Obama has 1,871.5 delegates, including endorsements from party and elected officials known as superdelegates. Clinton has 1,697, according to the latest tally by The Associated Press. That leaves Obama just 153.5 delegates short of the number needed to win the nomination at the party's national convention this August in Denver.

There are 217 delegates at stake in the six remaining primaries, in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota. Even if Clinton wins most of those delegates, Obama could reach the magic number by the time South Dakota and Montana vote on June 3.

Obama has been careful not to declare himself the nominee prematurely, even as his campaign focuses increasingly on Republican Sen. John McCain. Clinton's campaign, meanwhile, has outlined a strategy for winning the nomination that extends beyond the end of the primaries.

The battle might not last that long.

For Clinton to have a shot, she needs several things to fall her way, including the remaining superdelegates. Obama has claimed more than 80 percent of the superdelegates since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. He now leads in states won, pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses and superdelegate endorsements.

He erased her longtime advantage in superdelegates this weekend and now leads 281-271.5. Some 200 undecided superdelegates remain, with an additional 42 still to be selected at state party conventions and meetings throughout the spring. Superdelegates are party leaders who attend the convention as delegates by virtue of their positions, and are not selected in primaries and caucuses.

Clinton desperately needs to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated in a way that greatly benefits her.

"It would be helpful," Wolfson acknowledged.

The Democratic National Committee's rules and bylaws committee voted to strip all the delegates from Florida and Michigan because they violated party rules by holding primaries before Feb. 5. The same panel will consider reinstating them.

Under the votes cast in January, Clinton would have won most of the delegates in both states. However, neither candidate campaigned in either state and Obama had his name removed from the ballot in Michigan.

Reinstating all the delegates and superdelegates would increase the number needed to claim the nomination to 2,209, perhaps extending the campaign. But even under the best scenario for Clinton, Obama would still be left with a lead of about 100 delegates, with fewer than 300 superdelegates left to be claimed.

"We need to do well everywhere," Wolfson said. "Our hope is that superdelegates will look at the results in some of these states and recognize that Senator Clinton would be the best nominee against John McCain."

Clinton haters are weak, pathetic people who are expressing an unflinching fear of republicans. Most of these sad, desperate people will likely never recover from these fears and their support of Obama and belief that he is going to be a unifier is exactly how we will all lose this election. The republicans are loyal when they shouldn't be yet so many of these spineless democrats can't hang together under the mildest of attacks. You know who you are and you didn't support the Clintons when they needed you, so why should we (her supporters) support you and the weakest candidate we have seen since McGovern? Say what you like but he has no real substantive experience at anything except campaining (name something real; you can't). Good luck to us all and say hello to another 4 years of this terrible, never ending nightmare of republican rule.

This is Obama's fault for using the codewords "the politics of the past" and "don't turn back the clock" to dog-whistle that the republicans will attack them if nominated, the Clintons (and oh by the way you spineless idiots, my solid 40%, will abandon them once again).

The only way Obama can win in November is by default because the GOP was so morally bankrupt that they went along with all of the neo-cons and corporations until we're all driven to the brink of disaster, and even then they're still polling almost 50%. Astonishing!!!

I am amazed that the Dems have trapped themselves so badly by selecting a nominee that can't win over white working class voters.

It's just like McGovern or Mondale all over again, the guy just can't connect with Joe SixPack - not in a million years.

I really thought the Dems were going to have an easy time of it until Obama took off his shoes to display his feet of clay.

The press - including HuffPo - is telling us that he has already won, but I guess the word didn't get out to the folks in WV. The DEMOCRAT voters of WV have rejected him 65 to 35.

ceasewsnake,

Actually OBAMA is losing now by 41pts. 67%-26%. Nasty loss. Obama supporters can say that WV doesn't matter but I'll say WV matters a hell of a lot more than Idaho (total of only 20,000 Democratic Votes cast!!LOL) or any of the small red states and causcus primaries in red states that Obama won (THE ONLY REAL WAY HE RACKED UP THE DELEGATE COUNT--CAUCUS'S!)--which of course he has NO CHANCE of carrying this fall in a REAL election-----Big fat ZERO chance in those states. Colorado will not be in play for DEMS. Stop dreaming--get off the Koolaid. McCain is very popular in the west! Mccain's been branded the maverick--the bucking 'horse' of the Republican party, that's what the American people have been sold & bought years ago regarding McCain. Plus AZ borders CO. It won't even be close. By the way, I hear, NO DEM has won the Whitehouse in a National election without carrying WV since I think 1916. OUCH.

The only way Hillary has any chance is if she changes the goalpost......That would only be another example of not wining on her own merits.....it is the merits of her husband's legacy, over-negative politicking, and moving the goalpost, yet again~!! She can use that 'fuzzy-math" all she wants...but it's not going to change the eventual outcome~~She can stay in this race, for the remaining three weeks....but the only thing she will be doing is chasing her tail.....Round and a round she goes~~where she stops~~????

I wish all these negative comments would stop between the two sides ..... our party had an embarrassment of riches when this election began. The Republicans were hanging their heads in anticipation of defeat ( I should know I am married to one )..... I am an Obama supporter , but I realize that Hillary supporters feel very passionate about their candidate , and no one likes to be kicked when they are feeling down. Whoever wins this nomination will need the full support of the other side to win the general election..... neither Obama or Hillary can win without the others voters. Republicans are loving this ( Rush, Ann Coulter et al managed to jump in line with McCain even tough they can't stand him ) . We need to wise up and realize we can't win if we are not unified. The Republicans are slimy ( except the aforementioned spouse) and they are very good at slinging the mud and diverting attention from the real issues. We must do what is best for America and get those damn Republicans out ...... And if we win my husband is not allowed to watch Fox in our house anymore!!!! So PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE!!!!!!

dear gemgal
regrettably, i think it's a little too late for that. obama's supporters have seen to that. please read lucie lee's post and any of gladys' comments throughout the day. frankly, i don't want to be associated with them. they aren't true democrats. their allegiance is to a personality not the party or an ideology. better too lose and rebuild without them then to win and burn the house down. sorry, but you're going to have to wait another four years if obama is the nominee. too many of us just can't stomach his campaign and how dismissive its been towards hillary. but buck up all is not lost, there is still a chance that this will go to the convention and hillary will emerge victorious. we can at least hope. that's the only chance the party has winning this fall. if nothing else your husband will be a happier camper for a while.

I must also add that the negativity has flown both ways..... I fear Hillary would not win without Obama support either, and many on this side would not vote for her . We just must find a way to get through this...... I just heard that the Democrat took the house seat in Mississippi .... Hell must surely be freezing over tonight ; )

Oregon will end it all. Obama will have the majority of elected delegates with a lead that Hillary will not be able to overtake. After that the super delegates will bring Obama over the top. Remember, the race was based on winning the delgates, not some other metric that HRC makes up and changes on a weekly basis.

dude, it's not. it's only just beginning. get over it, and get ready. excuse me but please don't put words in my mouth you have enough trouble articulating your own words. i never equated hillary's win in michigan to anything. i'm don't understand your point. a revote is needed because the election there did not include obama. fair enough. so why not have a revote, so everything is equal. additionally, i never "whined about "he didn't follow the rules". what rules are you referring? and when exactly did i get pasted by "a dishonest question". the point i was making, sir, is that citing the sanctity of the"rules" over the moral imperative of allowing voters their right to vote. and, this is similar in principle of not allowing blacks to vote because of certain rules.

There can be NO revote......too much has happened..and besides that.....They moved up their primaries to be influencial.....got docked for not going by the rules...now would it be wise to allow them to determine the outcome of this race? I think NOT...........there will either be a 50/50 or a 60/40 split of the delegates only..............no actual votes counted...............this can not be helped, each of those states government did this NOT Obama................Clinton planted that notion along with many others.......same ole same ole washington politics.................If MI and FL have issues with this...then they should take it up with their elected officials................sorry...facts are facts

so, your okay with disenfranchising democratic voters because of some bureaucratic rules issued by the dnc that hillary happened to sign on to. does the process serve the candidates or voters? i guess it's more important to follow rules, since hillary agree to them then to serve democratic voters. let's get our principals straight, right. rules are rules no matter what the consequences? so i guess it was okay when the supreme court denied florida voters their right to have their votes count in 2000.
