Cindy McCain's Tax Returns Called For By Three Op-Eds

Cindy McCain's declaration that she would never produce her tax returns has struck a chord with a few editorial pages around the country. In the past two days, the Washington Post, Washington Times and the New York Observer have all penned demands that Cindy come clean on her fortune.

Yesterday, the Observer lamented the lack of scrutiny cast on the McCain brand, and called for journalists to call for fairness:

Double standards are endemic in American journalism. But Cindy McCain, wife of the Republican presidential candidate, displayed poor taste in flaunting her family's special immunity from press scrutiny. Declaring on NBC's Today that she would "never" release her income tax returns even if she becomes first lady, the Arizona beer heiress showed no concern that she and her husband will have to meet the same tests as other would-be White House occupants--ever.

Today, papers on both side of the aisle responded. The Post declared that the last thing America needs is a president with more secrecy:

For a candidate who puts a premium on transparency and ethics, John McCain has been slow and grudging in releasing tax information. He did not commit to doing so until after he had secured the nomination, and then he disclosed only two years of taxes, far less than his Democratic rivals. Mr. McCain's wife, the heir to a liquor and beer distributorship, declined to release her returns, citing -- as Ms. Heinz Kerry did -- her children's privacy. Releasing tax information entails intrusion, but, as we wrote four years ago, presidential candidates and their spouses "relinquish a significant measure of privacy. Meanwhile, tax returns provide information not contained in financial disclosure forms, such as charitable contributions and the use of tax shelters." For Mrs. McCain to say, as she did on NBC's "Today" show this week, that she would never release her tax returns, not even if she were to become first lady, is unacceptable.

The Times points out that Cindy McCain's privacy argument doesn't carry any weight, since she has used her fortune to benefit her husband's presidential bid:

Moreover, during a crucial period of the Republican nomination contest -- from last August (after Mr. McCain's campaign had collapsed financially) through February (when its remarkable political rebound effectively clinched the Republican nomination) -- Mrs. McCain used accoutrements of her wealth to keep her husband's campaign literally "in the air," traveling from one campaign stop to another.

Many of those photos you saw of Mr. McCain carrying his own luggage through airports during that seven-month period were snapped after he disembarked from the corporate jet owned by the company headed by his wife. According to an exhaustive analysis by the New York Times, Mr. McCain complied with federal law regarding the use of the plane. But he uncharacteristically exploited a massive loophole that the Federal Election Commission has been trying to close. That loophole allowed Mr. McCain to fly relatively inexpensively. The law, whose loophole specifically exempted aircraft owned by a candidate's family or by a company it controls, enabled the campaign to use that jet as a charter plane while paying much cheaper first-class fares and indulge in a subsidy.

Can we get a delegate that isn't a cheating liar?
McCain and Hillary are turning this into a FARCE.

Well, I guess McCain was right after all in calling his wife what he did.

Which reminds me of an apocryphal Richard Burton anecdote. A woman accosted him, asking him if he was indeed a Celt (pronouncing the word with a soft C, as Boston pronounces its hoop team's name). He replied, "Madame, if I am a Selt, you then are a sunt."

So what if she was born into a wealthy family...good for her, wouldn't we all want to be that blessed? They file taxes seperate from each other so give the woman her privacy. At least she has given back of her time and money. I haven't heard of Obama supporting anything important. Cindy McCain supports several charities, such as Operation Smile, which repairs facial abnormalities in children and young people, and Halo Trust, which removes debris left behind after wars, especially land mines and countless other charities for underpriviledged young people. Not to mention the senator himself donates a large portion of his income to charity and most of the proceeds from his books go to charities as well. It's not as if Mrs. McCain has all this wealth and is greedy with it, she does good with it. Some of you just have so much hated for the "wealthy" and I just don't get it. If it were not for the wealthy in this country a lot of us wouldn't have jobs, schools wouldn't get large private donations for poor kids to attend college and the list goes on. A lot of wealthy people do good with the money they have. She was born into a family who worked and made a substantial amount of money. Is that a crime? This is such a unimportant issue in my view.

If she's done so much good with her money, then why doesn't she go ahead and just release her returns? To hear you tell it, she certainly doesn't have anything to hide and it would actually go a long way to attract voters to the McCain campaign.

And exactly how does this show hatred toward the wealthy? Unless you're saying that it was hatred of the wealthy that motivated Republicans to demand that Teresa Heinz Kerry release her returns in 2004.

why doesn't she release her tax returns then, because we all know how honorable the McCains are. Their wealth is not hated, it's their sanctimonious BULLBLEEP

Cindy McCain will not release her tax returns. Good for you Cindy. That helps my party (Democratic).

Since the McCain campaign has been loath to release information on his health it seems only fair that she refuse to discuss the issue of her wealth.

I wrote this argument on another thread but it is even more relevent here.

People should begin boycotting Anheuser-Busch beer and products! Drink Miller, Sam Admas, PBR, Oly, Coors, Steel City, Lone Star, Rolling Rock, Heiney, St. Pauli Girl...anything but Bud, Michelob, Busch or other Anheuser-Busch product!

Let a few tens of thousands of cases of Bud sit in Cindy's warehouses for a couple months after that "Born on Date" and give the McCains a feel of the economic pinch the rest of us are feeling.

I'm not going to drink any more A-B Brand beers until the Nov. elections are over. I'll Drink Sam Adams instead. I call on all other Democrats to do the same! We can ground the friendly skies of Cindy and put McBush back in Coach!!

Good idea RealMacDaddy, and maybe while you and possibly others are boycotting AB, a few thousand workers, who never did you any harm, might just lose their jobs. More clearheaded, knee-jerk liberal thinking. Brought to you by the great taste of Bud!

I think Cindy is getting even with her flip-flopper husband for comments that were aired about the way he spoke to her and about her. He will beg her to comply and she may not, except if she is sure, very sure he can win and she becomes the First Lady.

Cindy , Cindy, Cindy,

Everyone knows that YOUR family is the ELITIST. Don't be afraid , we all know you are fifthy RICH. It will make it a TAD harder for your insane husband to call Obama the ELITIST , that is what you are truly afraid of isn't it? Nine Homes and Billions of dollars.

Anyone with a brain can establish that you are RICH. Just release them because this will not go away Cindy.

"People have been too polite -- so far -- to talk about what Michelle Obama really looks like. Shall we ....?"--bauersox

Since I couldn't reply to the above comments of yours, I thought I'd re-post it so as to elicit comments.

Please, Mr. bauersox, do tell us what people have been "too polite" to say about this beautiful woman's looks. Please, please, please DO tell us! I'm sure you can appreciate beauty, in ALL its forms, not just traditional "white" beauty. Or might you want to say something about her dark skin (not cream colored/not "high" yellow). Or about her hair, perhaps? What words would you use to describe how the next first lady looks. Please, dispense with your obvious tact and manners and tell us what EVERYBODY thinks of Michele Obama's looks. We're waiting.....

bauersox has lots of tacky things to say about Michelle Obama. Do you think she dumped him in high school or what? It seems very personal....

It"s yet another example of how the vote-against-their-own-self-interest GOP mudslingers operate. They can"t speak about the GOP"s record, because their record is dismal. They can"t defend their positions, because their positions are absurd. How does the rank and file GOP voter benefit from tax breaks for the ultra-rich? How do they benefit from GOP policies that gave us obscene gasoline prices? They choose to deny science and denigrate scientists because GOP political hacks tell them how to think.

With nothing of substance on their side, all they have is a collection of childish non-issues.

As I recently saw it so elegantly put: They nuture contempt for education. But my favorite is all the uneducated and easy to lead on the Repuklican side ranting against the "death tax" not realizing that they are not the less than one percent of the population to whom it applies.

In reply to bauersox's remarks (thanks for reviving them, docpooh!), Michelle Obama's "looks" exude intellect, forcefulness, and clarity of purpose--in addition to her natural beauty. The right wing swiftboaters will never accept that in a liberal or leftwing woman. We know by their own admission they will go after Barack Obama with "viciousness;" just watch what they say about Michelle after her husband gets the nomination . . . . bauersox has only opened the door to the pathetic slanders that await her.

Republicans raised a big stink in 2004 regarding Teresa Heinz Kerry's returns. And now the worm has turned.

It's hugely entertaining watching them squirm and make pathetic attempts to distract and deflect the issue.

Any Presidential Candidate Mccain must Turn in cost and spindasures for their campagne. He used her Company Jet. That puts her In question of what alse she has supplied him personally for this campagne in the last year or more. Any thing given his campagne must be reported to the F.E.C. and sense he's in hot water with them already that Bush may have seemed to pulled strings to get him out of, he doesn't want anymore trouble with them know. Plus even Republicans demands openess from their candidates! You can't run a goverment through secrecy. If Mrs Mccain doesn't think she owes it to the American people to show she is not dealing with undesirable people, and terrorist groups, or terrorist countries and etc. ---------Than John Mccain does not need to be in this race for President. We don't want to wait till he's in office to find out that she may be dealing with people who can harm our country and its people through her company or personal life! Thats why showing Presidential candidates and their spouse's show Tax's an some of those from the past. So, If Mrs. Mccain thinks she's above all us, and all other candidates and their wifes than these are not the kind of people to represent the people of the U.S. It's as simple as that! Sounds like we have a pair of rich snobs on our hands who feel they owe no one nothing.
