LOS ANGELES — James Garner, who was hospitalized late last week after suffering a minor stroke, is doing well and should be going home shortly, the veteran television and film star's publicist said Tuesday.

The star of such TV shows as "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" went to the hospital after becoming ill at home Friday, said his publicist, Jennifer Allen.

"He's still in the hospital but my understanding is he is doing well and will be going home soon. When, exactly, we have not been told yet," Allen told The Associated Press.

Garner, who turned 80 last month, rose to prominence in the 1950s as the star of "Maverick," playing a wry riverboat gambler who was quicker with a quip than a gun and, unlike his Western counterparts, was faster still to run from trouble than to face it. The show aired from 1957 to 1962 but Garner, who was nominated for an Emmy as Bret Maverick, left in 1960 to pursue a film career.

He has appeared in such films as "The Children's Hour," "Victor/Victoria," "The Great Escape" and was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 as the small-town pharmacist opposite Sally Field in "Murphy's Romance."

Garner returned to television full-time in the mid-1970s, playing Jim Rockford, a modern-day private detective who, like his "Maverick" character, also was not afraid to run instead of fight. He won an Emmy for the role in 1977.

Garner also reprised his Maverick role in the short-lived "Bret Maverick" series in the 1980s.

More recently, he played Katey Sagal's father in the sitcom "8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter." Garner joined the cast in 2003 after John Ritter, who played Sagal's husband, died during the show's second season.

Has there ever been a more universally liked actor? I don't think I've ever met someone who didn't smile at the mention of the name James Garner. TCM recently ran one of my Garner favorites: "Boys Night Out," an interesting snapshot of the early-'60s sex-and-suburbia scene. If "Mad Men" were reconceived as a sex farce, this is what it would look like.

I meant at least 30 years in this new world. With medicine today, a stroke is just typical of some one from the heavens telling you to change your normal routeen and take care of yourself better. Vitamins and love. Aspirin a day wouldn't hurt/ I love you. XOXOX

Wishing only the best for you and a speedy and complete recovery! Mr. Garner, you are loved by many fans...not only for being a great actor who has entertained us for years, but for being a man many of us would have liked to call "friend."

One more thing....I would like to recommend for anybody who hasn't seen it, the Garner-Julie Andrews film, "The Americanization of Emily." It is my favorite movie, and I don't think it--with its strong anti-war message--could be made today.

I wish Mr. Garner a complete and speedy recovery. Years ago when I was in grad school, I was in the old Playboy club in Chicago with a mixed racial group of friends. One of my pals had a rich boyfriend with a key who was treating us all, and --with our student budgets, the steak and eggs early breakfast was a HUGE treat. When Mr. Garner spotted us, he came over and joined our table for a while.

This was the same trip that we went to a memorial in Grant Park for the the little girls who had been killed by racists in a church in (if I remember correctly) Alabama. The Young Republicans were picketing the service and handling out flyers that claimed that the sponsors of the demonstration were "non-anti-Communists." Yeah, and so are the Boy Scouts. It was an early lesson for us all in how bigotry works.

Garner is a wonderfully funny delightful man, and we were all thrilled to meet him.

James Garner is one of Hollywood's best. I think I can truthfully say that I have never seen a Garner film that I didn't enjoy. A great talent, and I believe a really fine human being. I wish him a very speedy and full recovery.

"Rockford? Alice, Phil's Plumbing. You're going to have to use the restroom at the restaurant one more night."

As a kid, those words meant I was just about to embark on my favorite hour of the week. Get well soon, Rockfish.
