Obama Calls Reporter 'Sweetie' In Michigan

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/22/08 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:30 PM ET

Obama Sweetie

Barack Obama passed off a reporter today in Michigan, and she seemed less than amused by his name for her.

"Hold on one second there, sweetie," he says.

The reporter signed off: "This sweetie never did get an answer to that question."

It's unfortunate that he called her that. He shouldn't have. At least he didn't call the reporter a "major league asshole" like Mr. Compassionate Conservative, Emperor Bush did.

I call men "sweetie" all the time--just before giving an order.

this is by far the most retarded thing that has ever become a controversy. WTF is the big deal with the word sweetie. I mean she was shouting over everyone as if she was a little kid looking for attention. His reply sounded more like something he would say to his own children who were trying to talk to him while he was on the phone. Female outrage to this shows wish wish by women to paint him as some kind of insensitive ass who feels women are beneath his notice. Please women grow up and stop treating everything like it is an attack on women everywhere. THIS IS BS

really... i wonder how many men he has addressed as 'sweetie'

as a working woman i can tell you that most women would be absolutely offended if someone referred to them as 'sweetie' , 'honey' , 'doll' etc ..when they are on the job... (or off it for that matter by anyone other than a lover or close relation)

It smacks of condescension , and an innate lack of respect for working women.

His apology is even more phony... it sounds like he is buying her off by offering her "access to his exalted campaign"

This guy is an arrogant disrespectful schmuck... right alongside ted 'killed mary jo" kennedy and chris "waitress sandwich" dodd

shut up, and stop whining. Sick of the bitter butch syndrome trying to sound like someone with a real concern... the issue is about the workers and their future NOT you and sweetie.

I dare say many African Americans in this country and on this site might disagree with you. Words DO matter and condescending, patronizing, and denigrating populations of people. How you treat people does matter and it shows exactly how you feel about others. It especially matters when you want to be the President of the U.S. and you SAY you want to represent ALL of the people.

For instance, your "bitter butch" remark says a whole lot about who and what you are.

This incident didn't occur at a meeting or press conference, but as he walked by. She shouted a question, hoping to get a freebie presser all her own. The future of auto industry/auto workers is a complex, major policy issue for a Dem candidate - not something to be addressed spur of the moment in a sound bite for one local TV "reporter" .

Local TV stations hire women "reporters" for their youth and beauty - not their journalistic creds - they and their male counterparts are simply well-groomed, impeccably coiffed talking heads!

I watched the tape. Little Miss "Reporter", aka Corkie Sherwood , was so pissed at the next President of the United States for not stopping dead in his tracks, disrupting his whole schedule, and giving her station (WPOS - for all your local news!) a BIG STORY ! ! ! , which would get her NOTICED BY A NETWORK ! ! ! so she could move UP FROM HER JERKWATER LOCAL STATION ! ! ! - to the BIG TIME, where she belongs ! ! ! that she actually referred to herself, on air,in a we-are-not-amused-tone as "this sweetie".

That was UNPROFESSIONAL - a reporter never makes themself part of the story.

W nicknamed Maureen Dowd the Cobra, and others (far more important than this small town "talking head") as Pootie Poot, Balloonfoot, Pedro, the Big O, Turd Blossom, Fredo, Pablo, Outback Woman, Sabretooth, and Quasimodo - less respectful than Sweetie..

Pootie Poot, The Big O, Balloonfoot,

uhh, she WAS part of the story, despite any unprofessional behavior. and you're focusing on something totally irrelevant because you don't like attractive people on TV.

Are you trying to suggest that he would end up like Emmett Till. If you are, you are disgusting.

In this bittersweet campaign we have seen a couple of attention starved women make noise about nothing. OK, poor things, you've been heard. But frankly, such attention craving people harm the rest of us, and do nothing of any value for themselves.
09:59 PM on 05/15/2008
You're right on, FlowerGirl! Many women on this site sound so starved for any male attention it is pitiful. To let someone demean you and think it is cute or sexy is truly sad. They bring the rest of us down and send the message that this kind of condescension is OK with ALL women. We all need to respect ourselves (and not "swoon" at the thought of a little patronizing attention from a man) and others will respect us.

Really ridiculous, isn't it? ...

Well, she got attention -- via phone call message -- which may have been, afterall, what she was looking for.

I can appreciate her annoyance if she didn't get an interview that it sounds like she was promised, but being anger over called 'sweetie'. Come on, give us a break -- it's not liked he called her Godzilla or something, which seems like it might have been a more appropriate term for her.

So, I guess McCain calling his own wife "CU#T" was not as despicable to the Hillary supporters here....
