Verdict In $1 Billion NewsCorp Spying Case

Jurors in Los Angeles have reached a verdict in a $1 billion lawsuit alleging that a company in Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp empire spied on a rival and posted its secrets on the Internet.

Federal District Judge David O. Carter told lawyers in the case that he would read the verdict in court Thursday morning, according to his clerk.

The lawsuit was brought by the satellite television company EchoStar more than five years ago.

According to the suit, a NewsCorp subsidiary, NDS, hired computer hackers to crack the security code for the set-top boxes used by customers of EchoStar's Dish Network.
