Op-Ed: McCain's Global Warming Selective Memory

As he rolled out his plan to combat global warming this week, Republican John McCain jumped at the opportunity to remind voters that he'd flown nearly to the ends of the earth to view the effects of global warming. But apparently he wasn't willing to give that same credit to his Democratic rivals.

When a reporter in North Bend, Wash., asked McCain why the average voter concerned with climate change should support him over Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama, his reply was tart. "I have been involved in this issue for many, many years," the Arizona senator said. "They have never, to my knowledge, been involved in legislation, nor hearings, nor engagement in this issue," he said, adding that he'd "traveled around the world and seen the impacts of climate change."

Nice lies, Mr. McCain. Do you really expect people to vote for you?

Another senior moment? Can't even remember Clinton on the same trip and the support of both Clinton and Obama on his bill? Seems Mr. McCain's mental capacity may be his biggest problem to being electable come November.

No, this is no hypocrisy, ... sorrily.

This is the open declaration of war to the "human pox", which is "desecrating" the lovely face of "mother earth".

Don't believe? Then answer please, for starters, what have in common:

a) "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" --- [i.e. igniting World War III] and
b) "end our addiction to oil" [i.e. (since it's not planned to start an Apollo program for real new energy sources, from nuclear to solar) wasting foodstuff in the tanks of the rich while the human race STARVES in the unfolding global commodity inflation] ??!!

Ah, yes, we see. But it's not possible, of course, to state this in public, since war critics must be tree-huggers. Nothing against trees, for that matter (which, by the way LOVE carbon dioxide), but we live on industries and fertile lands, not green meadows and icebergs. (which, btw. no. 2 are back too: http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=8583 )

Perhaps, there is a slight chance, the average American will let this dawn upon him/her once depression strikes in earnest after the elections.

I am less optimistic for the "progressive American", of course. For he/she is an inveterate believer in political correctness and the way to tackle real problems by symbolic gestures.

Now we just need to choose one of these:

A) he forgot (hmmm...what was that I forgot?)

B) he lied (oh, horror, I fell off the straight-talk express)

C) he's an astute politician of the old school (includes A and B responses :-) LOL

Biggest fallacy since "your check is in the mail" is that "the Democrats control Congress."

Until we have a veto-proof majority or elect a Democratic president, all we have is control of the legislative agenda and enough votes to prevent Bush from doing bad things (during those instances when we have the political courage and will to confront him).

So I say: "Let's get on the McCain bandwagon and take his critical comments for what they're worth - by electing a Democratic president and bigger Democratic majorities in both houses this Nov."

Then and only then will we get anything done on Global Warming, and Sen. McCain (based on his remarks) should be very happy.

McCain is "reading" a speech right now (on Msnbb) and he is trying to sound more like a democrat everyday (probably because he sees the repubicans are going down for the count) and his right wing audience is having a time even applauding him. I doubt he is scoring any points in this speech. He is such a lousy speaker. He can't even read the teleprompter. Yuck!!@#$%^&*()_+

This man is such a loser. I can't wait for Obama to go one on one with this man. He will wipe the floor with this old geeser.

Hes' got a point, but its a partial, flawed point. Dems have done nothing about global warming. Perhaps that's because all Washington politicians from both sides feed out of the same corporate trough, or perhaps it was because the Dems had been out of power since back last century and knew it would be impossible with Lott and Bush standing in the way.

One of the standard bearers of the democratic party just won a nobel prize for his work on climate change. But he had to do the bulk of his work outside of Washington because: a) he was not elected president of the United States; and b) political gridlock and a hostile president on this issue prevented any meaningful discussion and solutions on climate change in Washington. McCain has been as much a part of this problem as anyone. Where has he been in his 30 years in Washington on this issue?
