WASHINGTON — Cindy McCain, who two weeks ago said she would never make her tax returns public, revealed Friday that she had a total income of more than $6 million in 2006.

The presidential campaign of her husband, Republican John McCain, released the top two summary pages of her 2006 tax return, eager to avoid making her earlier refusal an issue in the contest.

The documents show that Mrs. McCain, who files her taxes separately from her husband, paid more than $1.7 million in federal income taxes _ a tax rate of more than 28 percent. She reported nearly $570,000 in itemized deductions.

McCain's campaign said she had received an extension on her 2007 tax returns and aides said it is likely she would make those public when they are filed.

The Arizona senator released his own tax return last month, reporting a total income of $405,409 in 2007 and $84,460 in federal income taxes.

McCain's two Democratic rivals _ Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton _ released information about their taxes earlier. Both Obama and Clinton file their taxes jointly with their spouses, offering more detail of each family's wealth and income.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported making $4.2 million in 2007, while the Clintons reported $20.4 million in income.

Confined to only the summary pages, her released returns offer limited information. She listed $4.5 million in income from a broad category that includes rental real estate, royalties, partnerships and trusts. She also reported nearly $300,000 in salary income, more than $280,000 in dividends, and more than $740,000 in capital gains.

Heiress to a large Arizona beer distributorship, Cindy McCain's worth has been estimated at more than $100 million. Her assets, as listed in McCain's personal financial disclosure, are vast. But presidential and senatorial financial disclosures only require assets to be listed in broad ranges, and many of hers are valued at simply "over $1 million."

Last week, she sold off more than $2 million in mutual funds whose holdings include companies that do business in Sudan. John McCain has been a critic of the violence in that African nation.

Aides said that disclosing only the summary pages had precedent, pointing to tax information made public in 2003 by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

In an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on May 8, Cindy McCain said she had no intention of making her returns public.

"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate," Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain, said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.

Asked if she would release her tax returns if she were first lady, she said: "No."

Her response brought a prompt demand from Democrats for the McCains to be more open about their finances. Obama and Clinton have released tax information dating back to 2000. The Clintons also released their tax returns while Bill Clinton was president.

The McCain's have been much more limited in their disclosures.

"It is laughable for the campaign to release so little information and say they are being transparent," said Karen Finney, the communications director for the Democratic National Committee. "This is another indication that John McCain is not serious when he says he wants to run a transparent campaign, and a disturbing sign that a vote for John McCain is a vote for four more years of secrecy."

Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates – as CNN points out clearly

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

Clinton Supporters too …. !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

Sending a note to current Clinton supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Obama supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Clinton, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Clinton. It's that easy...

People in financial circumstances as fortunate as those of Mrs. McCain should pay more in income taxes, so that the government can provide more services (for example, paid health care) to those much less fortunate. People who have lost their jobs because of outsourcing, or lost their homes to foreclosure, or been injured because of roads in disrepair, are all entitled to be discontented. Indeed, the flames of this discontent should be fanned, not snuffed. There is nothing "pathetic" about decrying the relatively small amount of taxes the McCains have been paying; rather, it is a wonderful, constructive approach to our nation's problems. If no one ever complained, we'd probably still have slavery and witch trials. On the other hand, it should be emphasized that this is a matter of tax policy, not Mrs. McCain personally. Some respondents complain that her fortune may have been acquired somewhat outside the pale of respectability. But in a karmic sense poor Mrs. McCain is being punished, if in no other way than that of having to be married to John McCain. She ought to get a crew cut, like Sinead O'Connor's, just to spite him.

Good grief iratior give this class warfare thing a rest.

The top 50 percent of income earners in America already pay over 96 percent of the income tax.

In case I have to do the math for you that means that the bottom 50 percent pay less than 4 percent of the income tax collected.

The top 10 percent of income earners in America pay over SEVENTY percent of the personal income taxes collected where the bottom 20 percent often get more back than they ever paid in with EIC.

The top five percent where I fall paid close to 60 percent of the personal income tax collected.

The top 1 percent where the McCains fall paid just short of 40 percent of the personal income tax collected in America.

I wasn't born with any silver spoon in my mouth. My old man worked 38 years in a steel mill.
You are certainly right. I could pay more and probably wouldn't miss it but please don't insult me for doing well in life by acting like those who haven't done so well are somehow owed something by the people who have succeeded.

Did she declare her call-girl income? That way she could deduct her make-up and the trowel she uses.

OK you nosey people. Now what are you going to do with this info?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:56 PM on 05/24/2008

Glad you asked the question. The thing to do with this info, as far as I'm concerned, is to argue that Mrs. McCain should have had to pay more income tax. If she lived in Sweden she'd have to pay more income tax. But there, the government pays for people's health care. If people as rich as the McCains paid more income tax, more services could be offered by the government to the public, so the high price of gasoline wouldn't hurt so much.

So should Obama pay more, too? They both paid over 28%. Suits me. I'd even pay more so others could have universal health care and free college educations.

How would the wealthy paying more taxes reduce the "hurt" of the high price of gas?

Well actually theres not much that we can do with this summary. It really asks more questions than it answers. The only thing thats clear from her tax summary is the Bush capital gains tax reductions (that her husband wants to make permanent ) were quite good for Mrs McCain.

Mrs Kerry made the same type of summary declaration of her tax information in 2003. The difference was that it was fairly clear from the summary what the source of Mrs Kerry's income was (primarily non taxable municipal bonds). Mrs McCains merely asks more questions.. What did she invest in that gave her $740 Thousand Dollars in Capital Gains income. What was the source of four and half million dollars in income from Real Estate, Partnerships and S Corporations on line 17 of her 1040. What type of investments does she have that could be made more profitable by tax policy that her husband is advocating? Interesting questions but I doubt we we see the detail that answers them. As I said the only obvious thing that jumps out is that Capital Gains tax reduction to 15 percent definitely lowered her tax bill.

This morning, I was talking with my aunt and she is of the opinion that Cindy McCain uses a great deal of her money (mob or otherwise) on Botox treatments! Can't argue with that--her face is about as natural looking as Joan Rivers'! At least Ms. Rivers has a sense of humor about her attempts to stay young!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 PM on 05/24/2008

On the other hand, Joan Rivers might very well lose her sense of humor, were she married to John McCain.

Oh please, don't you believe in First Amendment rights? Many a "dam" may have been damaged in the Chinese earthquake, but we never regarded the cracks in them as relevant to the state of Mrs. McCain's face after Botox treatments.

Some respondents have pointed out the apparent inconsistency between complaining about the six million that Mrs. McCain made, while remaining silent about the millions made by Obama and Clinton. But there's no inconsistency once the thing appropriately subject to complaint is precisely identified. It's not the amount of income, but the attitude towards paying taxes on it that could be at issue. While Obama and Clinton make millions, they don't seem to begrudge the government the money it collects in income tax from them. However, I get the impression that Mrs. McCain, or her husband at least, would hold such a grudge. But especially in the context of the hardness of the times, that grudging attitude is especially irksome, because the government ought to have more money so it can deliver more services to people. For example, if the government paid for our health care as Sweden's does, it wouldn't be such a burden to people that gasoline prices have gone up so.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:47 PM on 05/24/2008

May I ask why you get that "impression"? It is reported that she paid over $1.7M in Federal taxes in 2006...more than most people pay in a whole lifetime. She has also donated a great deal and has gone on 55 mission trips last year alone.

Its a shame that people's lives are so pathetic that they look at successful people and condemn them for being successful.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:04 PM on 05/24/2008

The reason I get the impression that Mrs. McCain, or her husband at least, begrudges the money the government collects from them in income taxes is very simple: McCain wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. $1.7 million is way too little for a person such as Mrs. McCain to pay in taxes. If she lived in Sweden, she'd pay much more, and properly so. This is not to condemn the McCains for being financially successful; it is to criticize their attitudes, not their assets.

Well we don't know what she "donated" do we? We know that she claimed over 500 thousand dollars in itemized deductions in 2006 but without a schedule A form we have no idea how much of that was for charity.

What we do know is that her Husband did release a schedule A for 2006. Almost 85 percent of his itemized deductions were for charity. Sounds pretty noble until we look at where that charity went. It went to the John and Cindy McCain Foundation. Hmmmm lets see where they donated their money. If we look at the last 6 years of tax returns for the McCain foundation we find that over $500,000 in donations went to three private schools in Phoenix. What do those schools have in common? Why they are all schools that the McCain children attended. Nothing illegal about it but it speaks volumes about how the McCains set their charitable values. The 2006 'charity' alone saved the Senator over $20,000 in Federal income tax.

Look the issue is Transparency . Does a candidate or their spose make money that is questionable in its source or poses conflict of interest questions if that person becomes President? In Obama's case their income is pretty clear. What he makes, what she makes from their jobs and book royalty income.
Clinton income is less so. The income from her salary and his pension is clear cut. The book royalties are basically clear cut. Problem is much of his income in the last 6 years comes from making speeches. That becomes a bit hazy in that we don't know if there is any quid pro quo deals going on that would entice some organization to pay an ex president hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a speech (especially if that organization in not in America).
In Mrs McCains case there is little transparency. What did she invest in that gave her $740 Thousand Dollars in Capital Gains income. What was the source of four and half million dollars in income from Real Estate, Partnerships and S Corporations on line 17 of her 1040. She obviously has some right to privacy but that has to be balanced against policy decisions that her husband has the ability to affect should he become President. Of course his answer is always basically "its her investments and I don't have any idea what they are about."

So the McCain's and the Clinton's both filed for extensions on their 2007 returns? Hmmm maybe they're using the same accountant - or maybe they both have some income they'd rather not have examined in an election year.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:41 PM on 05/24/2008

Most people that have seven figure incomes do file for extensions. I have for the last ten years. It isn't like you sit down one evening with a W-2 and an envelope full of receipts and then you are done and you certainly don't take them to HRBlock. I have a former tax attorney doing mine and he is quite busy and he puts off the longer ones to the end for extensions.

The issue skirted was "assets". Most of the vast wealth in this nation has structured their money in such a way that they show little income, but hold vast wealth in the form of assets. Kevin Phillips covered this magnificently in his book "Wealth and Democracy". He talked about the "family wealth offices" in NYC that had staff whose only job was to cut checks to and balance the books for the fifth and sixth generation of the uber rich. Money held in trust can be structured so no taxes are paid on it.

There are three things to tax in America: productivity, assets, and consumption. We tax all three through income tax, property tax, and sales tax. We also continuously argue over which segment should be taxed more.

Remember Cindy's interview when she said they would only get the tax returns out of her cold dead hands---well, I guess they got them. Anywho, the interviewer asked about Burma (Myanmar) cyclone and Cindy was so wanting to help. She wished she could go over there right now and help. Too bad the interviewer didn't ask what Cindy did to help out the Katrina victims. Remember this photo from 2005, where's Cindy? Headed towards N.O.? I doubt it. She had to cut WcCain's birthday cake.

Dear Cindy,
I love you. I think you are beautiful and I know you are rich, but I don't care about that. I would never call you ugly bad names. Please ditch that snarly yoyo you're with now and marry me. I'm a LOT younger and much better looking than Mr. Potty-mouth, and I think your eyes are beautiful and when you smile my heart goes pity-pat very fast. I like candle light dinners and romantic walks in the evening, quiet talks and holding hands...(even in public)!! and I have a great sense of humor. Did I mention that I'm very good looking too?
