The steady disclosures of past lobbying activity by campaign aides, and the struggle to minimize firings, continue to plague John McCain's presidential campaign -- but the reality is that these problems only get worse the deeper anyone digs. There you'll find an anti-cigarette tax campaign on behalf of Lorillard Tobacco and a full-scale campaign to persuade the US Senate to approve use of Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste site.

McCain has sprung a trap on himself, demanding exceptionally high ethical standards for public officials, while simultaneously turning his campaign operation into a home for some of Washington's lobbying kingpins -- men and women who specialize in just the influence peddling McCain has repeatedly deplored.

On his own campaign web site, McCain declares:

"Too often the special interest lobbyists with the fattest wallets and best access carry the day when issues of public policy are being decided.... [McCain] has fought the 'revolving door' by which lawmakers and other influential officials leave their posts and become lobbyists for the special interests they have aided....As President, John McCain will see to it that the institutions of self-government are respected pillars of democracy, not commodities to be bought, bartered, or abused."

In glaring defiance of such reformist claims, McCain selected former Texas Congressman Thomas G. Loeffler as his national finance co-chairman, despite the fact that Loeffler matches to perfection those officials McCain demonizes, the ones who pass through a revolving door in order to "leave their posts and become lobbyists for the special interests they have aided."

After dumping Loeffler and four other high-dollar Capitol Hill rainmakers, McCain is twisting in the wind as he tries to justify retaining in key campaign posts three other leaders of the special interest community: Campaign Manager Rick Davis, senior strategist Charles (Charlie) Black and top foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann. Every one of them would feel more pride than shame in being described as "special interest lobbyists with the fattest wallets and best access who carry the day when issues of public policy are being decided."

Once a politician is forced down the path of ethical purity, however, the genuine difficulty emerges with the realization that few if any of the men and women who help run campaigns have clean hands.

Were McCain to decide to really turn over a new leaf, what would he do, for example, in the case of Mike Hudome, president of MH Media in Bethesda, Md., a firm which has been paid $10.6 million for television ads by the current McCain campaign? Year in, year out, who pays the bread and butter fees that keep food on Hudome's kitchen table? Just take a quick trip on the web to MH Media's web site and you will get a taste of the kind of work MH Media does:

This is an example of an "issue campaign" MH Media proudly undertook in behalf of Lorillard Tobacco Company, aimed at killing a proposed $1.50 tax on each package of cigarettes in New York. The US Chamber of Commerce has also been a MH client. Here is what MH claims on its website to have done for the business association:

"Faced with powerful opposition from a coalition of casinos and environmental groups, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce turned to Mike Hudome at [MH Media] for an issue advocacy campaign to secure support for President Bush's proposal to store the nation's nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. On the other side, were [environmental and tourist] interests.... raising questions about the safety of President Bush's plan. In just a weekend, MPGH produced 12 different radio ads and purchased $1.5 million of media time in 44 markets. The ads presented a clear choice for Senators: Stand up for your constituents and support President Bush's plan to get the waste out of their communities or side with the out-of-state special interests who want the waste to continue piling up in their communities. The ads, which aired during Congress' weeklong 4th of July recess, were pivotal in securing Senate support for President Bush's Yucca Mountain plan. On July 9, 2002, the Senate voted 60-39 to move forward with the proposal."

One of the Senators voting yes on filling Yucca Mountain with radioactive waste was John McCain.

At a more subtle level, the McCain campaign is enmeshed on every front in the network of Washington special interests: for example - and there is nothing illegal about this - the campaign uses Public Opinion Strategies (POS), a polling firm with a stellar ethical reputation, to conduct surveys. But POS is also pulling in hefty fees from an astonishing range of corporations and associations that want something from government - something they are paying to get. Go to the POS web site and check out the client list. Here is a small sampling:

Aetna Inc.; American Hospital Association; American Plastics Council; Associated Builders & Contractors; Bristol-Myers Squibb; Chemical Bank; Food Lion, Inc.; McDonalds; The National Association of REALTORS; The National Football League; NBC; Pfizer Incorporated; Pharmaceutical Research and Manufactures of America; Proctor & Gamble; Software Publishers Association; The Trump Organization; Verizon; Waste Management, Inc.

The more you look at McCain's dilemma, the more he appears to be the victim of his own ethical crusades.

Now, he and his lobbyist-strategists, including Davis, Black and Scheunemann, must figure out some way to get out from under this paralyzing issue and bring to an end the repeated questions raised during every McCain television appearance about the propriety of having lobbyists in charge.

When hit with a major lobbying flap in February, McCain declared, "These people have honorable records, and they're honorable people, and I'm proud to have them as part of my team." He then sought to bring the subject to a close:

"I don't have any more comment about this issue...I'm moving on. I'm talking about the issues and the challenges of America and the big issues that Americans are concerned about. I addressed the issue and addressed every question that was addressed to me."

It didn't work. New controversies emerged, staffers were unceremoniously fired, and McCain has not found a way to get what had been his signature issue - reform - to stop nipping his ankles at every turn.

If McCain junked his entire campaign and tried to live up to his "own" standards, his bid for the Presidency would become a lonely endeavor with very uncertain prospects.

McCain watched W and figured that there's no connection between what a candidate says and what he does. Preach the right gospel, then go and sin willy-nilly. Except the press is watching (and listening) this time. Sorry Mr. McBush, time to ride off into the sunset.

Good you are starting to point out the lobbyist and special interest problem. For McCain it is very bad. However, this is a stench throughout Washington. Obama has his gang of influence people who peddle mega business programs, hidden as grass roots issues. Much like a grass roots Presidential campaign. When will people not position this as an issue of the Dems or Reps, but clearly admit is is a deep problem of both parties. Kick the bums out. Term limits. Vote 3rd Party.

Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive " and most likely to be decided by superdelegates " as CNN points out clearly

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you"re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

Clinton Supporters too ¦. !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

Sending a note to current Clinton supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Obama supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Clinton, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Clinton. It's that easy...

McCain was the best the Republicans could come up with? A Bush clone? I think Americans have had an abundance of the current president. Four more years of the same would probably put us with the starving, diseased third countries they both make token visits to.

Wake up America! Demand your country back!!

Bottom line: Obama will win the presidency and the democrats will sweep the elections because the people are on to the republican disappearing act. Elect a republican: watch your money disappear.

It's the ultimate guilt by association, someone who is now working for the McCain campaign once worked for a lobbying firm that legally represented a foreign country and that country's leader was bad, so McCain is tainted?

No he is just a liar since he brags about not being in the clutches of lobbyists. Besides the lobbyist in question is Charley Black who represented evil dictators like Marcos of PI who was at the very time, doing terrible things to the citizens of PI in his attempt to knock down dissent. Furthermore, McCain even lies about his Church membership. He told the whopper that he is a member of the North Phoenix Baptist Church and he has never even been baptized, he was sprinkled. You have to really be dull-witted and have no moral rudder to say you are a Baptist and you have not been Baptized by a full dunking. He is actually Episcopalian and that is fine. Works fine for me, but pandering to the far right by fibbing that he is a member of a conservative Church is very stupid. So it seems he will even sell his soul to get that nomination. So on with Obama, What you see is what you get!!!!!

McCain seems to have two faces like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He has the side that wants to take the high road and not hire lobbyists and campaign on issues. Then he has the side that usually wins that hires lobbyists who lobby for the Burmese military junta of all places and that directs little, but ad hominem attacks at Senator Obama. Once he loses the election he will wish he had stuck with the high road, but like so many Bush administration employess, once one trades in one's integrity, one does not get it back.

The end justifies the means....that seems to be the thinking at McCain central. All those lofty ideals were fine until the reality that he was not popular enough on his own to raise the money needed for this run. Then all those bets were off.

Campaign financing reform does need to take place. However, the McCain people are probably flabbergasted that the Dems have been able to raise such an incredible amount of money in small donations. The folks that think McCain and Bush are just the ticket for this country are either very rich or very uninvolved in the political procress. The uninvolved don't contribute so he needs to have lobbyists raising money with lots of strings from big contributors. or none at all.

When lofty ideals and political reality collide, guess what is going to win?

Yes, but McCain is not good a kneecapping people either the way Bush and Rove are. His attacks do not stick too much and he is ineffective at it. He is a poor, lackluster communicator overall.

As you say, McCain's lofty ideas of running a campaign based on the issues lasted about as long as a nanosecond. He cannot compete with Obama in charisma, in ideas, or in communication skills. Obama may win the presidency after having run a campaign based on decency. Imagine that!

The internets'a ability to reach countless small donors has big a bid advantage for Obama and Democrats, in general. I hope this advantage remains in their corner for years.

Whoever said Bush officials had any integrity? Like so many other things in ""Mc Cain World"" this too is rapidly passing. Besides, in his world they're called "Lobbyers" and he doesn't have any of
those on his team. Just like he doesn't have any Pastors They're too much trouble with their ethics and all. Hagee and Parsley aren't his pastors. Not like Rev. Wright was for Obama. No -sir!

Any officials with integrity, like Colin Powell or even Tony Blair, lost it after their association with Bush. Bush has a hypnotic effect on people where they lose their moral bearings. Right now Attorney General Mukasey is sacrificing any legitimacy and his reputation on the Bush altar. Jail them all!

The problem is these companies and organizations are the very ones that turn the wheels of both campaign finance and legislative lobbying efforts.

The conflict of interest is obvious, just as it is obvious that George Bush and Dick Cheney are criminals who are responsible for killing a lot of Americans and generally giving a royal screwing to the rest.

The fact that congress hasn't done a thing about either of these major issues should leave little doubt in the mind of every citizen of the depth of corruption that exists in government at every level.

Corporate America spends billions of dollars lobbying our representatives. Ironically, that is money we have spent on the products of these companies. That money comes from the profits of these companies that more properly should be paid to shareholders. That is, you and I. Our own money, via our retirement and investment dollars, is being used by coprorate America to give us a royal screwing. This is why our elected officials must absolutely be isolated from the influence of corporate America. The current scheme in it's overall complexion is absolutely criminal in every way. This is the very reason George Bush and Dick Cheney have been able to kill Americans with impunity. It is all about profits with the lives of Americans and the welfare of the country not even a consideration.

THOMAS:

Keep digging you haven't gotten near the really good stuff.
You have to look at the foundations that McCain has set up in VA and the investments that the McCains have but are trying to keep from the public by failing to disclose the tax forms of Cindy McCain.
Make sure you look beyond the 2006 tax year when you get complete access to those tax documents.
The McCain's also have some pretty interesting trusts set up that are vested in some fairly questionable assets.

I've seen hundreds of "fairly questionable" things about all 3 candidates so far ("Obama The Magic Negro"... as he was titled by the Los Angeles Times, "Hillbiillary", and John "McCan't".

It's fun watching these three stooges with no credibility attack one another.

Obama has taken $15 million from lawyers/law firms, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, and many of those firms employ lobbyists. Clinton has taken slightly more from this group ($15.4 million) while McCain has taken less ($4.2 million).

Not a real good argument therte, dude... kinda like the logic the "other side" likes to use. We need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. BTW... I reserve the right to be inconsistent!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:00 PM on 05/23/2008

Yes, where have you been? This is not because of the lofty McCain morals. It's because groups like this cover their bets by giving big money to those they wish to see win, and smaller amounts to the other side. If it were offered, Mr. McCain certainly wouldn't be turning it down.

Let's see now, lobbyists are????? Persuasive attorneys and marketers, hired by their employers(American industries, Political actions groups=liberal and conservative agendas, religious groups(includes Secular Humanists/Atheists and New Agers, Scientific enterprises of all kinds and disciplines, FOREIGN governments, Foregin security services, United Nations emmissaries, and possibly Alien visitors(who knew?).

And their job is to represent their employers viewpoints. These lobbyists have good salaries, money to spend, time to and methods to do this. Is this a great job or what???? And who wouldn't like a job like this!

Do you actually think that an individual's letter to a Senator or group of Senators/Congressmen/women will get anything done??? Do you really think this?

If you do, go back and demand that your parents school taxes, educations college loans be refunded. You either didn't learn anything or you are totally naive!

We in America HAVE THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY! NOW GROW UP AND SMELL THE POWER!
