McCain's Medical Records: The AP Report

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. — John McCain, seeking to become the oldest elected first-term president, gets an in-depth skin cancer check every few months because of a medical history his own dermatologist calls "remarkable" for its number of dangerous melanomas.

He now appears cancer-free, has a strong heart and is in generally good health, according to eight years of medical records McCain's presidential campaign made available Friday as it sought to prove that, at 71, he is healthy enough _ and not too old _ to serve as president.

The fair-skinned Republican nominee-in-waiting, who also sustained severe sun damage from his 5 1/2 years in Vietnamese prison camps, remains at risk for developing new skin cancers. He regularly has precancerous lesions and more common, easy-to-cure skin cancers removed.

It has been six years since his last episode of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer _ and eight years since a melanoma invaded his skin deeply enough to scare his doctors. His dermatologist found no worrisome lesions during his most recent exam, less than two weeks ago.

"Senator McCain enjoys excellent health and displays extraordinary energy. And while it's impossible to predict any person's future health, I and my colleagues can find no medical reason or problems that would preclude Senator McCain of fulfilling all the duties and obligations of the president of the United States," Mayo Clinic internist Dr. John Eckstein, his longtime personal physician, told reporters in a conference call.

He added: "Age should not be a limiting factor in this day and age."

McCain has shrugged off questions about his age by highlighting his stamina and strong genes. His likely Democratic rival, Barack Obama, is 46, lean and agile, and a frequent basketball player who says he has quit smoking. Neither he nor Democratic opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton has released health records.

While melanoma may be McCain's personal foe, cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading killer, especially with age. And Eckstein pronounced McCain's heart strong _ with no signs of blood-flow problems during an intense stress test _ and his cholesterol and blood pressure, while not perfect, fine.

The doctor told the Associated Press in an interview: "I think physiologically he is considerably younger than his chronologic age based on his cardiovascular fitness."

Melanoma raises the biggest health concerns. McCain has had four separate spots of melanoma removed from his head and arm on three occasions _ in 1993, 2000 and 2002. Three spots were very early stage, when they were in the uppermost skin surface and easily cut out.

But one, on his left temple in 2000, was invasive melanoma, what doctors call an "intermediate risk" melanoma because of its thickness _ 2.2 millimeters. McCain required delicate surgery to remove and examine lymph nodes that showed no sign of spread.

"We don't have a crystal ball, but we have no way to say anything at the present time would preclude him from running for office," Dr. Suzanne Connolly, McCain's Mayo dermatologist, told the AP. In November 2004, she wrote that her patient's history was "remarkable for multiple melanomas."

The 10-year survival rate for that intermediate melanoma is 65 percent, said Dr. Stuart Lessin, director of the melanoma risk-assessment program at Philadelphia's Fox Chase Cancer Center. He was not involved in McCain's care.

"He's not cured," Lessin said. Still, the biggest risk of recurrence is in the first few years, so at eight years out, the chances of melanoma returning at that spot and killing McCain is "in the single digits," he added. "He's pretty much out of the woods."

But every bout of cancer increases the risk of another new cancer. Given McCain's fair skin and history of sunburns, he has a 5 percent to 8 percent chance of developing a fifth melanoma, Lessin calculated. Good checkups, however, mean any future melanoma should be caught in time to be treated successfully, he said.

McCain's most recent exams show a range of health issues common in aging: He had benign colon polyps removed during a routine colonoscopy in March, growths that are common with age and that sometimes turn cancerous unless taken out.

He takes medication to keep his cholesterol in check and just switched from the controversial Vytorin that made headlines this winter to a proven standby, simvastatin.

The Vietnam veteran has degenerative arthritis from war injuries that might mean a future joint replacement.

He's had kidney stones and in 2001 had his enlarged prostate reduced; it shows no sign of cancer, then or in his latest exam. And he was a two-pack-a-day smoker until quitting in 1980.

During his first presidential run, eight years ago, McCain disclosed hundreds of pages of records to reporters as he sought then to counter what aides called a "whisper campaign" questioning his mental fitness. In those records, medical personnel concluded that his years in prison, including solitary confinement, left him with no psychological wounds. Aides said McCain has had no mental evaluations in the past eight years.

This time, a small group of reporters reviewed 1,173 pages of medical documents that span 2000 to 2008 over several hours in a conference room at a resort just outside Phoenix and a few miles from the posh Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, where McCain receives most of his medical care under a pseudonym _ which reporters were asked not to disclose. Coincidentally, the release came the same week that McCain's close friend, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, revealed that he had a cancerous brain tumor.

The documents include mundane personal details, such as the fact that he had earwax removed earlier this year and the dermatologist showed his wife, Cindy, how to monitor possibly suspicious skin spots hidden by his waistband. Though he's known as temperamental, the doctors made a point of repeatedly writing in the documents that he was "pleasant."

Also revealed: He has occasional momentary episodes of dizziness, when he gets up suddenly. McCain first told a doctor about them in 2000 _ the visit that also uncovered the melanoma _ and intense testing concluded they were harmless vertigo. He didn't report any episodes at his most recent exam.

Don't be fooled this "release of medical records" was done in the truest style of the Bush White House releasing information--- in drims and drams. Only a handful of selected reporters were allowed to view over 1100 pages of medical records for a three hour period. There could be no copying, photographing or recording made of the contents. If you have nothing to hide why not put them out there, really out there?

No mental evaluations in the last 8 years? Now that's scary. We've already had one known case of Alzheimer's in the WH, and there's a very good chance that the present incumbent is brain-damaged, possibly as a result of substance abuse. It seems to me that ALL presidential, VP and Supreme Court candidates should undergo neurological exams - regardless of age.

Perhaps dementia might explain McCain's responses to a series of legitimate questions, as reported on a New York Times blogsite (http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/03/16/mccain-stumbles-on-hiv-prevention/) on March 16, 2008. If not dementia, then what would explain the following exchange?

Q: "What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?"
Mr. McCain: (Long pause) "Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy."
Q: "So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?"
Mr. McCain: (Long pause) "You’ve stumped me."
Q: "I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?"
Mr. McCain: (Laughs) "Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception " I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it."

No matter which explanation applies, willful deceit or ignorance, neither are qualities that this nation needs in the next occupant of the Oval Office.

Please read the full post, linked above, for the full story.

Straight talk? By what definition?

Is the media going to pore over Obama's medical records as well? Word has it that he has smoked for years: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=2855994&page=1

Isn't it important that we know whether he is "at risk" or whether he is still psychologically or physically dependent on this "substance"?

Personally, I don't care about any of this, but the media must be balanced: what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

So when do we get to learn if Barry's Brain has been damaged from all those years doing drugs?

So McCain is healthy. Didn't we see in his tax returns a few weeks back that he received a $60,000 per year tax-free government pension for being 100% disabled? I guess you can be healthy and 100% disabled.
05:48 PM on 05/23/2008
Yes you can. You can be 100% disable and still be healthy. I'm sorry that the logic of it makes no sense to you. Hang in there and you may get it soon.
05:51 PM on 05/23/2008
I would like to answer this question, if the moderators will allow me to comment. I'm providing an interesting fact. McCain is not 100% disabled. Rather, his disability payments are 100% tax free, because of the severity of his wartime suffering. That's what "100%" refers to.

For the record, the following is from the LA Times and explains what is meant by the figure of 100%.

"Certain types of military and veterans pensions are either partially or completely tax-exempt, depending on the seriousness of the disability. In McCain's case, the exemption is 100%."

The implication is that McCain's disability is at the maximum end of serious.

We taxpayers are paying for his healthcare and pension----till he is dead.
And yet he wants to take it away from us working people if we have it at our place of employment.

I'm sure a million tears were shed today by Obamabots that McCain is not dying of some terminal cancer. I always find people who worry about age funny. The young can die as easily as the old. For all we know we will wake up tomorrow to hear that Obama suffered a stroke in his sleep and died. What good would his age had done him. McCain is 71 and is heart is stronger than my 30 something heart. I am McCain is healthy. Now the Obamabots can go on and bash other things like McCain's wife for being too hot to be first lady.

No, in fact I would think very few hope for the demise or disease of another. Even if the MSM wants to blow Hillary's comments about RFK into a froth most of us know we are all mortal and don't think in such terms. As for McSame eating applesauce, well that may not be far off but I wish him a nice retirement home and enough viagra to be able to bang his drug-addled trophy wife for years to come.
04:29 PM on 05/23/2008
He may be cancer free for now. But the kind of cancer he suffers from is a recurring and invasive cancer. It could come back tomorrow and it could kill him.

It's a good thing his heart's working, because McCain's going to have to load up on beta blockers to get through a debate without blowing his stack.

Heck I was waiting for the psychological reports. Bet he doesn't have them and I bet that wouldn't be released anyway. Is this some of what he is NOT releasing. Another short tempered ptsd person perhaps?
03:06 PM on 05/23/2008
if you could be bothered to actually read the article, you would see that he released his psychological evals in 2000.
05:24 PM on 05/23/2008
This is from the article. Please don't cut my comments again, mods; this is useful information:

"During his first presidential run, eight years ago, McCain disclosed hundreds of pages of records to reporters as he sought then to counter what aides called a "whisper campaign" questioning his mental fitness. In those records, medical personnel concluded that his years in prison, including solitary confinement, left him with no psychological wounds."

I'm not worried so much about cancer affecting a McCain Presidency...I'm worried about dementia, PTSD, and "manchurian" influence affecting the ENTIRE COUNTRY.

I am most concerned about his mental health. He seems to slip in and out of reality and has some major anger issues. He is slow thinking on his feet and often has to apologize for or change his statements. I would love to see a psychiatric board have to certify all the candidates. This is too important a position to let some borderline crazy jump in and start pushing buttons.

John McCain claims to be in great condition and to have "good genes." In this story, McCain "... has recalled his 'rim-to-rim' Grand Canyon hike in 2006." McCain has stated that he is planning to hike across the Grand Canyon again this summer.

McCain also received a tax-free V. A. disability income in 2007 of $58,358. To access the related story, please see http://www.latimes.com/ news/ nationworld/ politics/ la-na-pension22apr22,0,485555.story?track=mostviewed-storylevel.

This TAX-FREE disability income that would seemingly be predicated on his inability to participate in gainful employment, however his salary as a U. S. Senator, in 2006 was $165,200. Perhaps the salary of a U. S. Senator, or U.S. President does not rise to the level of "gainful employment"?

If you know of a vet who has suffered similar (or worse) experiences, can you imagine what their financial situation would be like if they had been able to earn a salary placing them in the top 5% of all wage earners (in addition to extremely generous benefits), allowing that person to comfortably invest the $58,000 plus of tax-free disability income every year for well over thirty years? What might that individual's financial situation be like today?

Think every vet who continues to suffer from physical and/or psychological infirmities resulting from combat experiences have received such generous treatment?

Any vets having suffered from such calamities or those close to them care to comment?
03:13 PM on 05/23/2008
"This TAX-FREE disability income that would seemingly be predicated on his inability to participate in gainful employment..."

No, that's not what that means. The disability payment is 100% tax free. That 's what the 100% refers to, not that he is 100% disabled. His injuries were severe, and he lost 5 years in prison. That's why his disability payment is 100% tax free, although he is not 100% disabled.

The following was included in an article in the publication, The Age, based in Melbourne, Australia, dated April 23, 2008 (http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/queries-on-robust-mccains-disability-pension/2008/04/22/1208742937995.html):

"It is a legitimate question to ask about the commander-in-chief, is he fit to serve?" said Robert Schriebman, a senior Pentagon tax adviser and tax lawyer who recently retired as a judge advocate for a unit of the California National Guard.

"If McCain can hike across the Grand Canyon, then why should he be receiving tax-exempt disability payments from the Government?" Mr. Schriebman wondered.

Are you saying that Mr. Schriebman is ill-informed?

he really took that money? and voted against Webb's bill yesterday, with a wife worth $100M - amazing.

Did his records show that he is coming apart at the seams? His response to senator Obama's criticism of his not voting for the GI Bill? I expected him to stamp his feet to go with his turning red temper tantrum. There are those of us who feel that the fact that one served should be enough to reap the benefits of putting your life on the line everyday. His warped idea of teasing them with more for staying longer is Draconian. Dr. Strangelove can barely contain his anger at ever being questioned. It's not suprising considering how the press has treated him but there he'll be standing next to a man in the prime of his life who made his way not because of the Admirals in the family but against all odds. A man who was president of the Harvard Law Review rather than last in the class his family was able to get him into.

Bomb, bomb Iran McWhacko.....needs to go back to one of his 8 homes and have his NAP!
