"The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button" Trailer: Watch Brad PItt Age Backwards

A European version of a trailer for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" has found it's way onto YouTube. While Paramount has removed others for copyright infringement, the below, for now, still plays. The movie is the big screen adaptation of an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story by the same name and stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. Spanning most of the 20th century, the story begins when Pitt, as the titular character, is born an old man and ages backwards. Blanchett plays his love interest Daisy. There is also supposedly a cameo by Shiloh Jolie-PItt, but not in the trailer. The film opens in December.

I read this story many years ago. It's minor Fitzgerald, probably a quickie sold to a magazine for ready cash, but a truly intriguing premise. Sorry to see that the filmmakers have padded out the story by tacking on the inevitable "love interest." (The focus of Fitzgerald's story, as I recall, was the relationship between the man and his parents.) I suppose the folks in the marketing department have a spreadsheet that says this movie will make more money if Brad Pitt beds down with Cate Blanchett, but for me artificial "love interest" scenes mean just one thing: bathroom break.

The story is one of the most unusual for Fitzgerald. Its a fantasy about a man who ages in reverse. He is born old and then grows younger. In my opinion its not one of his better stories but it is kind of funny. Not exactly what I would call life affirming though. Who knows what Hollywood will do with it. I won't watch it even though I'm a big fan of Fitzgerald. I just can't stomach watching Pitt's pathetic excuse for acting.
