Can Women Alone Make "Sex" A Hit?

NEW YORK — Can a pure chick flick become a hit? Yes, if it draws a diverse enough swath of female moviegoers. For "Sex and the City," that will be the big question.

There are indications that the film, which opens Friday, is attracting a lot of interest from women of all ages _ not just the age of the four lead actresses, who range from their early 40s to just over 50.

"We can't remember the last time a movie has created so much anticipation among female moviegoers from their 20s through their 40s," said Harry Medved, a spokesman for Fandango, the online movie ticket site.

Medved said many women seem to be planning to go in groups. "We are getting a surprising number of requests for group ticket sales from women planning 'Sex and the City' get-togethers," he said.

It's not just the ticket sellers who are noticing the trend. Abbey Greenberg, co-owner of a specialty cookie company, says she's been getting calls by the dozens for her stiletto-shoe creations.

"It's been crazy," says Greenberg, of The Flour Pot, which is based in Ambler, Pa. "They start out by saying they want the shoe cookies. Then they say they need them for May 30th. Of course it turns out it's for a 'Sex and the City' party."

Often, the hostesses say they'll be drinking Cosmpolitans before the movie, too _ the favorite drink, as fans of the HBO series well know, of sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her pals, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte. Sometimes the hostesses add that they'll be dressing up in high style, as well.

"This movie just calls out for a girl's night out," says Greenberg, 27, who herself plans to see the film with a group of women, although not opening night, and not specially attired. "I'll wait until it's less crazy," she says.

Fandango, which is the largest online ticketing service but still represents a fairly small percentage of total sales, surveyed buyers who'd just purchased tickets for the film.

As of Friday, 67 percent of more than 2,800 who filled out the survey _ a self-selecting group, to be sure _ planned to see the film in a group of women. Only 6 percent said they were going with a man, and 16 percent said they were going with one other woman.

Oh, and asked their gender, 94 percent of ticket buyers said they were women.

You only have to look back two years to "The Devil Wears Prada," another female-oriented film heavy on fashion (with the same costume designer) and juicy female characters, to find a movie that scored big despite an overwhelmingly female demographic.

But there's a difference: "Prada" was rated PG-13, whereas "Sex and the City" is rated R, with good reason, as any fan of the often explicit series knows. That will severely limit the teen audience (those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).

"This movie really will be a paternity test for R-rated female-driven romantic comedies," said analyst Jeff Bock of box office tracker Reel Source. "There haven't been a lot of movies like this." Bock predicts the movie will have a strong opening weekend, then a big drop-off. "There's no getting around that this is a film oriented to women and gay men," he said. "It will be very hard to get past that, especially with a lot of testosterone-driven films out there this summer."

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" drew families in droves to achieve the second biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever, with an estimated $151.1 million in the U.S. and Canada from Thursday to Monday (and $160 million overseas.) By contrast, industry projections have "Sex and the City" bringing in from $25 to $40 million in its first three days.

Still, one analyst thinks "Sex and the City" may surprise skeptics.

"A huge female audience can create a blockbuster of a movie if there's enough interest," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the tracking firm Media By Numbers LLC. "We're seeing that women from 20 to 55 are very interested."

To Dergarabedian, "Sex and the City" could be "a different kind of date movie" _ a date among girlfriends: "This should be a major bonding ritual."

But could there be a downside to all the buzz surrounding this heavily marketed film? The current issue of "Time Out New York" features Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte on the cover _ but with their mouths taped over.

"No Sex!" the cover reads. "Enough already. We love 'em, but it's just too much."

I was a HUGE satc fan, and when I heard there was going to be a movie... I was actually disappointed, I think its a beautiful thing to end a TV series on a hight note, and just be a great show, that I'll always remember (own dvd set), and love with fond memories forever. Seemed like a movie can only ruin my memories, as if they are going to try to wrap up the amazing experience of living with the show week to week, into a neat little 2 hour bow... In that process diminishing it.

That said... I'm going with like 8 girls to see the show this weekend... 2 close friends and the others are friends of theirs. We are going to be over-dressed (borderline drag) in our favorite characters. Because I was most like the Carrie character when the show was running, I'm going as Charlotte now, and the rest of us are doing similar things, and of course going out after.

It really doesn't matter whether the movie is any good, as long as its cute, fun and takes us back to the show we know and love... It'll be fine.

While vacationing in New York, we went on the Sex and the City Tour. It was fun. I am looking forward to the movie mostly because I hope to see a lot of New York City scenery. I also hope we will see the bakery, town house and the bar where the girls hung out. So many of the people on the tour were so "up" on all the episodes. The tour was great fun.

Well, you blocked my earlier comment, so I'll try & clean it up (It wasn't that filthy before, but one must appease the internet overlords, I guess.). To any woman trying to get their man to see this with them: BE WARNED! THIS MOVIE IS 21/2 HOURS LONG! (and also pretty gross, for reasons that I can't go into) That's much longer than any comedy should be and it's at least two hours and 25 minutes over most straigh guys' "Sex & The City' threshold. Do not strain your relationship by forcing him to sit through 2 1/2 hours of this! Get another girl or a gay friend and see it with them. Please, for the sake of your relationship, leave your man home. If you don't, he'll never forgive you. Some of you won't listen to me, and I know we're going to have a spike in breakups and single women this summer because of it. So let me help you now and avoid any needless pain & suffering. Thank you, that is all.

"Do not strain your relationship by forcing him to sit through 2 1/2 hours of this!" "Please...leave your man home. If you don't, he'll never forgive you."

"Advice" like that is proof that women are more dominated by men (or should I say boys?) than ever before.

Who would bring a straight man to SATC in the first place? Its a movie that is for fans only... And chances are a straight guy wasn't an avid watcher of the series... To bring a straight man to his would be selfish, and she'd deserve to have her relationship strained, because she is an inconsiderate jerk.

I expect more of my women then to be fascinated by this air-headed emptiness.

Have you heard? In Israel, they asked the distributor to remove the word "Sex" from their promotions. They're as loopy as many Americans who freak at the thought of sex.

What I see in this photo is four (4) miles of badly used road !!!

Even as hookers, these four would not make enough money to live on !

NASTY !!!

The same, mostly gay audience that made the original show a hit will also help this boring retread in the box office.

TAKE NOTE WOMEN, NONE OF THOSE 4 CUT THEIR HAIR SO THEY LOOK LIKE A MAN.

TAKE NOTE, IDIOT!

Half of Hollywood's female heads are covered with extensions. Not everyone grows hair "well" or takes her next breath in order to please your taste.

The problem with Sex in the City is that it the constantly repeating story of finding flaws in men. The girls seek perfection. They have sex then look for a reason not to. When they find a flaw, the man is dropped and they move on, ever seeking new sexual partners. Is this sex in the American city?

I don't believe you've ever actually seen the show... Their flaws are what carried the show.

1. Carrie's low self-esteem leading her to only love a man that treats her like garbage. Even in the end she leaves a whole new life in a whole new country with a man that treats her the way she's always wanted to be treated for... The man that treated her like VERY easily disposable garbage.

2. Charlotte's obsession with being a perfect cookie cutter married woman, no matter who was pathetic. When she finally met her "perfect" rich doctor husband... who cant get it up, and couldn't deal with her inability to create the perfect picture of a family by giving birth to his perfect heir, she switched religions, married a man she wasn't attracted to because she figured it was now or never because he was available, rich and she was 38.

3. Miranda's character was nothing but flaws from day 1, so don't get me started... She was the only one that got it right in the end.

4. Samanthas flaws are obvious, she wants to be a horny 19 year old forever and her obsession with behaving that way was tragic. She couldn't be proud of herself for her own talents and accomplishments, she NEEDED constant reassurance from men that she was sexy.

So no... The show didn't only point out men's flaws. Til this day, I think Aidan is depicted as perfect.

I'm a woman and I never liked the series and won't see the film. I loved The Devil Wears Prada and still watch it occasionally. Sex in the City is trite and basically preys on women's fantasies.

These babes are faded; the tinsel of Los Angeles is looking a tad tarnished.

It must be hell, getting through the traffic; wasting gas on the expressway while the cars are jammed up, and having your makeup run in the heat. Smile for the camera!

News Flash: This is not the first "pure" chick flick. Dozens of these movies are released every year, and boyfriends and husbands are dragged to them every time. Why would "Sex" be any different?

Some men like my husband, are looking forward to the movie. We just received our free tickets from HSN today. They were a bonus when I bought SJP's "Lovely" perfume. Heck of a deal and we are looking forward to a "date" night to see it. I won't be DRAGGING him.

I watched all of Sex and the City on cable.

It resonated in many ways, but I also agree there was something maddeningly denigrating toward women about it (which is what I think the first commenter is hinting at).

I'll never forget the image of Charlotte when she was about to adopt a Chinese baby: She was walking around the house with a Walkman, listening to Chinese language learning tapes.

On one level, we were suppose to parse that as cute and somehow warm and human and "foibly." But what's cute about a woman being so idiotic?

And, yes, that's an extreme example; but the show was rife with storybook feminine ditziness of many kinds. I tried to metabolize this as "edginess" and the writers trying to go out on a limb to create something bigger than life. But in the end I had to say enough was enough; there has got to be a way to suggest a bigger-than-life story without injecting the characters with the specific kinds of tragic flaws that dangle perilously close to feeding misogynistic preconceptions of womanhood.

In a nutshell; vesting these women with jobs of varying degrees of professionalism wasn't enough to salvage them from the overriding characterization of their distinctly throwback variety of female vanity. Yes, it was colorful. No, I don't really think it spoke to the goals and aspirations of humanity.

"Yes, it was colorful. No, I don't really think it spoke to the goals and aspirations of humanity."

Was it ever supposed to? Really, did anyone look to a show called "Sex and the City" for an accurate commentary on the lives of everyday women living in the city? If they did, then shame on them.

I enjoyed the show for the frivolous fun that it was, an escape from what I knew to be my reality. Nothing more, nothing less. Come on, it's just a freaking TV show.

Well it didn't stop the HBO serries from being a hit, did it? I must admit that the only male I have seen gush over wanting to see this film was gay.

Bear in mind that the production budget was modest (as it didn't require a ton of special effects of complicated sets) and the revenue from DVD and cable will probably be good. So it will most likely turn a profit for all involved.

It won't make the top ten grossing films of all time, but it doesn't have to.
