Now you know networks are hurting: Reality-show budgets are being cut.

Long considered the cheapest of programming genres, reality programs increasingly are under the gun to cut costs. Producers are being urged to shoot shows faster than ever and use indoor settings to help reduce expenses.

"Every year there's more and more budgetary pressure," said Mark Cronin, producer of such VH1 hits as "Rock of Love" and "I Love New York." "Every network is having its budgetary problems, and that's being pushed back toward all content. So there's a constant pressure to produce more for less."

"Reality" shows are on TV to make us petty, mean and ignorant. They are one of the worst things American media manufactures.

A weapon used to dim the human soul. Toxic garbage.

Watched Top Chef last night and was absolutely distracted by the slutty, over-the-top product placement of GE and Glad. Guess this is one way of dealing with the budget cuts.

What's next, they want to do ALL SHOWS as cheaply as possible, TV viewers notice and don't watch,
next there will be nothing but infomercials, and even more TV viewers won't watch, (and that might not necessarily be a bad thing).

Waddya expect with the price of good, extra virgin Olive Oil now? There is only One Project Runway.

YIPPEE! Maybe the networks will start developing tv shows that are worth a damn. Reality TV is one of those misnomers, that belong in Carlin's category, along with military intelligence and jumbo shrimp.

What is a reality show? Is that one of those things scripted to look like it is spontaneous? I've read about those things, but have never in my life watched one. Don't think I will start now.

About the time that Survivor started on the network airwaves, I started cutting back on my TV watching. It wasn't worth the effort.Right now it is at less than 1 hour a week. (If I happen to be home, not doing anything else, and I remember it's on, I'll watch Daily Show & Colbert Report. This doesn't happen very often.) I can't help but think that television is a dying format, getting replaced by the internet, home video -- which is also killing the movie theaters (who aren't helping themselves by showing television commercials preceding the feature) and books. Of course, if they start to deliver quality programming, get some good writers in there to make the shows interesting, not to mention news shows which actually report the news, ratings may go up. But it may be too late. I found out that turning on the TV set is a habit which can be broken.
