The McCain campaign has done its best this week to get the media world to focus on the lapse in time since Sen. Barack Obama last visited Iraq. Two years without getting on the ground information, John McCain and his aides argued, is far too long for any candidate vying for the White House.

A similar line of attack could be levied at McCain when it comes to one of America's largest domestic tragedies.

Up until traveling there one month ago, the Arizona Republican had made just one public tour of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina touched down in August 2005, according to the Washington Post's travel records.

When the hurricane first struck, he was celebrating his birthday with President Bush in Arizona. In the days that followed, he urged Congress to make sacrifices to help the recovery effort. But he also expressed concern about going overboard and burdening "future generations of Americans" with "the highest deficit, probably, in the history of this country."

McCain's first post-hurricane visit to the region was in March 2006. His trip, according to those in attendance, was a full-day affair touring all aspects of the storm's destruction. It came, it should be noted, after pining by local officials for more federal attention including, Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu insisting that any politician serious about a presidential run would have to, at the very least, get a first hand account of the hurricane's destruction.

In the year that followed McCain did not return to New Orleans. He did, as noted by a Mother Jones feature on the topic, vote against establishing a congressional commission to examine the federal, state, and local responses to Katrina. Later, he voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane. In July 2007, he ventured back to the Gulf Coast, but, while he held an open news conference, the purpose of the trip was officially a private fundraiser.

Finally, two years after he first toured New Orleans, McCain returned to the battered city. On April 25, 2008, the GOP frontrunner traveled to the lower ninth ward with the state's newly elected governor, Bobby Jindal. It was what the Times Picayune called "an effort to distance himself from a signature failure of the Bush administration." He is currently scheduled to return to the city within the next week to attend rallies and host a town hall event.

Contrast this schedule to Obama's. By February 2008, the Illinois Democrat, according to his website, had visited New Orleans five since Katrina struck. Those trips included public announcements about Gulf Coast recovery plans, tours of devastated areas, public speeches, and campaign events.

Of course, the idea that one gains intrinsic knowledge of a political situation, war, or disaster area simply by visiting that regions contains serious flaws. Moreover, stops in New Orleans are not entirely analogous to trips to Iraq, of which McCain has made eight to Obama's one. Geographically, the Gulf Coast is closer than the Middle East. But from a presidential prerogative, the commander-in-chief seemingly has more direct sway over what to do about troops in Iraq than the pace of hurricane recovery efforts in the Gulf, which are determined by local and state governments as well.

But should Obama travel to the war zone in the next few weeks - and his campaign suggests that he will - then the two locales are indeed comparable. Both presidential candidates would have ventured to political hotspots for the first time in a long time in correspondence with the launch of their general election campaigns.

In the end, ironically, it could be Sen. Hillary Clinton, not either of the two likely White House nominees, who would be the candidate most admired for her post-Katrina platform. As Anne Milling, founder of the Women of the Storm, an organization of Louisiana women who have organized recovery efforts, told the Huffington Post:

"Of the three candidates, Hillary had the most developed plans when she came last June and we the Women of the Storm had a dinner with her. I thought that she had given it more thought than anybody. I think McCain's statement this last go around, he got it with businessman, but his first step has been to distance himself from the president. In terms of a developed plan we haven't heard it. Same with Obama."

While bodies are floating through the streets of New Orleans, people are stranded for 4 days in the Superdome, no water or food or evacuation arrives, George Bush is at John McCain's birthday party yukking it up with the glorious war hero.

Here's their Katrina policy: "Happy Birthday to You! Happy Birthday to You! Happy Birthday John McCain! Happy Birthday to You!" "Let them eat birthday cake, Heh Heh."

Condies on a shopping tour.

Cheney is resting safely in Wyoming.

That's the policy.

"Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) tried to contrast himself with President Bush’s delayed response to Katrina, saying, “I would’ve landed my airplane at the nearest Air Force base and come over personally.” But as Newsweek notes, on Aug. 29, 2005, when Katrina had just hit New Orleans, McCain was posing with President Bush for his 69th birthday:

It was Aug. 29, McCain’s 69th birthday, and on the tarmac, Bush presented his old political rival with a cake. The two posed, holding the cake up for cameras, and within seconds, went their separate ways. The cake, melting in the 110-degree Arizona heat, was left behind, uneaten."

Both Bush and McCain were at a Phoenix fundraiser the night the levees broke.
First things first for the perpetual candidacy.

Hillary will lose in her efforts to elect McCain; a replica of her efforts to sell herself. America is awakening and responding to Obama, the agent of change.

Well, finally someone actually questions McCain. He went to New Orleans and did the press conference and the MSM ate it up. Not a one of them did any fact checking. They just parroted his talking points.

Yes, but, Iraq's shouldn't be a strength for him either..

McCain went to Iraq 8 times and still doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia.

Why doesn't the media call him out on it? His arrogance is very annoying, when he has shown neither mastery of foreign policy nor good judgment.

So, Women of the Storm founder, Anne Milling, hasn't seen a plan from Obama?

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/additional/Obama_FactSheet_Katrina.pdf

Found it pretty easily on his website. She must not be looking very hard. BTW, couldn't find anything on Clinton's site regarding Katrina or Rita. (What happened to the search function on both Obama's and Hillary's site?)

What she said was that Hillary had a more detailed plan. From day one it has been stated that she was more policy detailed. So maybe if you look beyond being spoon fed by the media, you would see more substance with other candidates...

What do I care if Senator Obama has been to Iraq? He's not interested in how well it's allegedly going and neither am I. Just shut it down. Period.

First of all, Senator Obama is still fighting for the Democratic Nomination w/ two Clintons nipping at his ankles so he hasn't had the pleasure of jet setting all of the world like John McCain has done (not that it did him any good - still doesn't know what's going on). Secondly, Obama going to Iraq right not would be a security nightmare and would put our great soldiers at even more risk. They've already been put in unnecessary harm's way. Obama doesn't need to go there to see that it is an utter debacle. A blind person could see that. About the Katrina situation, I find the whole Bush administration responsible for the tragic aftermath. We can go all over the world and pretend to be nation builders and spreading democracy when we couldn't rescue citizens of the United States, who by the way were on the water and could be easily gotten to. Now McCain wants us to think he will somehow be different. PLEASE!!! We need a change of scenery called Barack Obama!

McCain, while it is obvious that you'd be more comfortable in a war torn country where you are not accountable to the people and our military cannot voice criticism. We the American people are in an election you should not run and hideout with your friend Chalabi.
You should be here addressing our concerns; do not treat us like you have done with the Katrina survivors.
We do not want to see a photo op of you having cake, dancing to your Bomb songs, or otherwise be extracted. The soldiers in Iraq already know how you feel about them, you have shown it in your lack of support on the GI bill. Also keep in mind that the Malaki government looking for a cooler respite heads off on a one month holiday because they know our troops are there in hell and will take care of anything that might happen.

Btw – can you ask Malaki what is he doing with the billions of dollars from Iraqi Oil?

this is utterly retarded. mccain is an ARIZONA senator. the ones to blame for the debacle are local and state officials primarily, including FEMA. new orleans is a lost cause; mother nature will repeatedly wash the city into the sea.

Let's get this correct. McCain is a UNITED STATES SENATOR who hails from Arizona. Arizona has their own senate that deals with state issues. As a United States Senator, his job is to deal with issues regarding all of the interests of the entire United States.

To write of New Orleans is offensive and short sighted. It would also be a blow to our nation's history and culture. Not just Louisiana or the South, but the whole NATION. It is worth any cost to preserve the ethnic and cultural importance of New Orleans for future Americans.

You can't compare the Bush/McCain war with New Orleans.

Please, in New Orleans where was the drama, the tragedy, the glory in seeing our soldiers marching into battle, rifles in hand, ready to defend their country's freedom and democracy. Now THAT's a trip worth taking!

All McCain wuld have in New Orleans are the homeless poor folk, the one's who didn't drown, complaining where's the help, oh we lost our homes, our pets, our family members.

Geez, McCain does have his priorities for Christ's sake.

Part I - This had better be a spoof that you have written here - or you are the most ignorant, despicable and insensitive idiot I think I have ever encountered in any blog.

Those people in New Orleans had to deal with dead bodies, sewage and poisonous water everywhere - no food, no water, no homes or shelter, NO HELP - for days and days and days. This was as bad as the conditions in any war - and - there was Crime rampant in the streets, gunfire and raping everywhere. So you tell me please, how this was any less important for ANY government official - Senator, Governor, Representative - PRESIDENT - to visit, focus on and contribute his/her energy and support.

To be continued in Part II.

Part II - This happened HERE in the U.S. - a priority for Any American. And McCain now only uses it for his own selfish purposes. He is a monster - as you will surely find out soon enough IF you have the guts to read about him in the coming weeks (beginning Here in the Huffington Post). Check him out - you will realize he does NOT deserve any defense. His record - voting in the House and Senate - and in his life, is despicable. He disrespects women in EVERY area, including his own wife (check out his history of voting against women's and children's rights). His violent anger and reputation for starting (fist-) fights is very scary, and he is OLD and forgetful and knows next-to-nothing about domestic affairs, the economy, or the important details of the War(s). And to make matters worse, he wants to start (makes jokes about) another War, while denying returning troops their (promised) rights to an education and better care. What a HYPOCRITE!

He Is Dangerous. Please - before you vote out of ego, or machismo - or IGNORANCE - do a little simple research. Then you'll be able to vote for the man who truly brings us Hope for Peace, Reconciliation, and Prosperity. Only Barack Obama offers this Hope.

President Obama 2009!

ON IRAQ
If I was a soldier in Iraq, would I support the guy that comes to the battle zone and then goes back to Congress to VOTE AGAINST my Education benefits, or for the guy that comes once but supports bills that benefit me when I leave the military? Who would you rather have on your side?

ON NEW ORLEANS
Obama has shown that he has genuine concern for people in distress, begining from his work in Chicago to visiting the New Orleans people and working towards bills that would benefit these people.
McBush on the other hand would rather visit them and then VOTE AGAINST bills that would help these people.

Come November, I can assure you we will see right through these guys and will vote our best judgements.
