PRINCETON, N.J. — Stephen Colbert, the host of his own Comedy Central show, Emmy winner, faux presidential candidate and best-selling author, added to that esteemed collection an award from Princeton University: "The Great Princeton Class of 2008 Understandable Vanity Award."

The award was mounted on a mirror.

"I have to say, I've never seen anything more beautiful," Colbert on Monday told the 2,611 Princeton graduates-to-be assembled at Class Day, which is held each year the day before commencement. Senior Class President Tom Haine pointed out that the ceremony was held in front of ivy-covered Nassau Hall in an area where Gen. George Washington defeated the British in the Battle of Princeton.

"Mr. Colbert is, as George Washington was, a great patriot," Haine said. "He stands firm against the liberal tyrannies of our time. In other words, he fits right in."

During his speech, Colbert _ in character as a right-wing, blowhard political commentator _ tweaked the customary message of graduation speeches by imploring students to maintain the status quo.

"You can change the world," he said. "Please don't do that, OK? Some of us like the way things are going now."

And instead of telling graduates to conquer their fears, he admitted his. "I'm scared of you," he said. "I can tell you are go-getters. At my college, for instance, no one got out of bed before 11 o'clock."

He also made fun of the black and orange class jackets _ known as "beer jackets" _ that the graduates wore, and other aspects of Princeton culture.

"When you leave here," the comedian said, "no one will ever, ever want to hear you sing a capella. And those jackets you're wearing, do not wear them to your job interview."

Then, he was presented with one.

"In that case," he said, "I take it back. This is a beautiful jacket. Change the world."

After his National Press Club roasting of George Bush, he should receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Interesting resurrection of the Bong Hits theme in student signage. Maybe they don't plan to take his advice.

Colbert and Stewart have different personas. Stewart is himself and Colbert is playing a character. The thing that bugs me about Stewart, as much as like him, is that he goes overboard when he shouldn't. Colbert's character is supposed to. As an example, Stewart will show a clip, let's say of some gov't official saying something idiotic, and when they come back from the clip he starts going wild. Instead of letting the clip speak for itself and making a muted sarcastic comment about it, he'll wave his arms and start screaming, "WHAT?! HE SAID WHAT?!" or some such thing. Man, that bugs me. And Stewart has a tendency to suck up to his guests, even when he asks a tough one. It's almost like he's embarrassed to have asked it, like he doesn't want the guest to get mad at him.

I think Colbert, even in his character, holds his guests' feet to the fire, whether left or right, more than Stewart does.

Then again, this comment is coming from someone who hates bullshit whether it comes from the left or right, but who leans to the left.

They're different. Colbert does his character -- very well. Stewart is himself and can do stand up. I doubt Colbert would do stand up.

Yeah Republican Conservatives Values are a riot with or without a comedian saying them out loud.

Not at all; Colbert is more of an Artist and true performer but in a satirical mode. he is an original and his compassion and intelligence comes across.

Jon is a true comedian( I guess a differnt kind of Artist) but definitely a funny man, not a performer.
His wit and timing is astounding, especially when he is interviewing any of the Republicans ...such as the McClellen interview and the whole ommission vs. lying discussion. He is really someone who is present and is so quick to respond to the other person that his brilliance always amazes me.

We are lucky to have both of them help us sane people get through the last 8 years of horror and terror...and all along we though the terrorist was about abroad.

They complement each other beautifully.

Stephen's background is in Improv. Stewart is more stand up.

But both are the most intelligent pundits in the broadcast media.

And have you ever considered: Everything else in the media is fake.

Blew your mind didn't I?

Stephen isn't a closet conservative. If you watch his show, you'll know that he's a liberal pretending to be a conservative. I love Stephen. He is mad stupid! And he looks like someone who has hit the bong a few times. He's a white soul-brother.

I agree...don't change the world.

The Great Minds who think they can bring Utopia usually plan to do so by taking away individual rights, either via tax hikes to fund their personal scams (Global Warming) or by forcing their morality on others (abortion, homosexual marriage).

Or by voting for a candidate who's overwhelming qualification is that they're black, a woman, a homosexual, etc.

The world would be a better place if politicians took care of the roads and sewers without contaminating the world with their brilliance, and everyone else took care of their own families.

Apparently, you do not grasp the concept of satire. You think Colbert is agreeing with you, but he's actually making fun of you.

Yeah, gotta hate it when people try and force their morality on others...like forcing prayer in school, trying to change the constitution so that certain people who love each other can't get married, telling women what they can or cannot do with their own bodies, keeping comatose vegetative individuals attached to life support even when they expressed a preference against it when they were alive, you know, stuff like that.

uh...not to put too fine a point on it, but the qualifed-only-because-he's-Black person who seems to be obliquely referenced here was teaching Consitutional Law at Harvard (ferchrissake) before he was 30 years old.

don't you think it's time to get your head out of your a** and spend time doing something besides picking fights on HuffPo?

What if Mr Colbert *says* he is in character, but in reality he believes a lot of the things he jokes about to some degree? Either he is a very good comedian or he believes some of the things he says. I just find it hard to believe that he can so quickly say some of the things he says or ask questions a conservative might say when interviewing people on his show. Remember, he grew up in a very conservative family and I'm sure some of that rubbed off on him. Whatever the case, he is really good and really funny and really quick...

He graduated from Northwestern. He ain't stupid. He developed his "chops" doing Second City improv, which is all about being quick. He uses both well.

Though he was quite good as the "bad guy" in an episode of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." Bravo repeats it now and then.

I never get tired of Colbert's act. He is always good, and many times even brilliant.

His speech at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner, with all of the criminals from the administration and media present , remains a tour de force in modern political satire.

One small excerpt, speaking of Bush:

"I stand by this man. I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers, and rubble, and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message: that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound—with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world."
