Caroline Kennedy On Obama's Team To Vet Vice Presidential Candidates

NEDRA PICKLER   06/ 4/08 05:46 PM ET   AP

Caroline Kennedy And Obama

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama named a three-person team including Caroline Kennedy to lead his search for a running mate Wednesday while expressing confidence that the Democratic Party would soon unify after a bruising battle for the presidential nomination.

"I'm very confident of how we're going to be able to bring the party together," Obama said after a brief conversation with Hillary Rodham Clinton, his vanquished rival.

Campaign officials said Kennedy, who is the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, as well as former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder and longtime Washington insider Jim Johnson have already begun compiling information on potential running mates. They disclosed no names.

Obama clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, taking a major step toward his goal of becoming the first black president. While Clinton has yet to concede defeat, she and associates have been maneuvering for the past 24 hours to gain her a place on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the founder of the Black Entertainment Network, was among them, and said he was doing so with her blessing.

Johnson said he had written the Congressional Black Caucus asking its members to urge Obama to place Clinton on the ticket.

Clinton "didn't direct me to do it but she certainly knows what I'm doing," said Johnson, who angered Obama's aides earlier in the race when he obliquely referred to Obama's confessed drug use as a young man.

Democrats began closing ranks quickly.

Two senators swung behind Obama after remaining neutral throughout his long nominating battle with Clinton, as did Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., a member of the House leadership with close ties to both senators.

"We have a nominee of our party," said Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa. Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado also announced his endorsement.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale, who had been a Clinton supporter, announced he was backing Obama.

It hardly mattered in terms of delegate math _ after months of struggle, Obama had more than enough to prevail at the party convention in Denver in August.

But Mondale, Harkin, Salazar and others poised to endorse Obama later in the day were also sending a message to Clinton that her race is over, whether she will admit it or not.

Obama began his public day with an appearance before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, where he pledged support for Israel and accused Republican rival John McCain of backing a "plan for staying, not a plan for victory" in Iraq.

Earlier, McCain freshened the criticism he directed at Obama on Tuesday night.

"I think he has exercised very bad judgment on national security issues and others," he said in a television interview.

The disclosure about the three-person veep vetting team was an unambiguous signal that Obama is turning his full attention to the general election campaign.

Kennedy's name came as a surprise, although she endorsed Obama at a critical time in the campaign last winter, saying he could be an inspirational leader like her father. She also campaigned for Obama.

Holder is a former federal prosecutor and District of Columbia Superior Court judge who held the No. 2 job at the Justice Department under President Clinton.

Johnson is widely known among Democrats for having helped previous candidates, including John Kerry four years ago, sift through vice presidential possibilities. He is a former chief executive officer for the mortgage lender Fannie Mae.

Obama and Clinton ran into each other backstage at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee meeting, which they addressed separately Wednesday morning.

"I just spoke to her today, and we're going to be having a conversation in coming weeks, and I'm very confident how unified the Democratic party's going to be to win in November," Obama told reporters as he left the Senate.

Asked if Clinton indicated she planned to concede, Obama replied: "It wasn't a detailed conversation."

He dismissed a question about her refusal to concede after the final two primaries Tuesday night by saying she was "understandably focused on her supporters."

Clinton visited her campaign headquarters in suburban Virginia, where she thanked staff for their work. Aides said she was also phoning superdelegates and supporters, and planned to host an 89th birthday celebration at her Washington home for her mother, Dorothy Rodham.

I tried to post this earlier, but it didn't get on. Choosing Caroline Schlossberg is a great piece of political manipulation, and judging from many of the comments here, it works. She tugs at our heartstrings. Only 6 when her father was assassinated. Old enough to understand, unlike her adorable 2-year old brother. Somehow we all wanted to make it better for them, and knew we couldn't. But her mother brought the children up outside of the Kennedy political life, and they were not really involved in the kinds of social activism that RFK's children have been. If you look at Caroline's resume, it's about the Kennedy Library, some token directorships and cultural institutions. She's nice. Poised. Intellectual. Her mother's child. It doesn't make one bit of sense to me that she advises Obama on his VP selection. Except that she tugs at our heartstrings.

Say 'no' clearly, plainly, and emphatically - so that everyone can move on -- including the news jockeys who are talking about this instead of the historic outcome or the RFK anniversary or profiles of Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder. (HRC is the polar opposite of Obama in the most important ways - and the wonks all know it.)

Please understand this: all the feminists are supporting Obama. Hillary's hard core supporters who say "I'll-vote-for-McCain-before-I'd-support-any-other-Democrat" are NOT Democrats and they are NOT feminists. They are female chauvinists and there IS a difference. These noisy spoiled sports do not support the Democratic or Republican agenda - they just got caught up in a girls-for-president fad. The news jockeys need to quit amplifying their pouting voices.

These HRC supporters probably will lose enthusiasm and go back to whatever they were doing during the last presidential election - not likely they were working for the feminist or other issues in the Democratic platform though. There is no way to woo them, they are like people who quit going to church and are never going to come back...because they have chosen to completely disconnect themselves from the point of the thing.

I am not sure who you mean by "all." My friends who call themselves feminists were staying the course and backing Hillary Clinton. To quote one: "I haven't worked this hard and waited this long to jump ship the first time a woman has a real shot at the White House."

A couple more Tarot readings of potential VP candidates. Claire McCaskill's reading was disastrous. The 10 of swords next to the 3 of swords. Betrayal and heartbreak. Patty Murray's was golden. Out of the 6 bottom cards, 4 were cups, and one of those was the ten of cups, which shows a rainbow up in the sky and a happy family dancing on the lawn. Good times. Her focus card was The Fool, and the fool is the type of person who goes through life lucky, it would be a teflon candidacy.

Best readings so far: Strickland, Hagel, Murray

Smart move. With the announcement of a VP vetting team, Obama no longer has to personally field the VP questions and can move on to taking on McCain. With Caroline Kennedy on the team, I think it's highly unlikely to see HRC even on the long list.

Caroline Kennedy vetting VP, great idea. Compare Caroline and Hillary. The contrast is over-whelming!

Ms. Kennedy has never sought public office. Good thing for Sen. Clinton, as she is a New Yorker and HRC"S seet in the Senate was once held by Roberrt Kennedy.

Ms. Kennedy has shown grace and wisdom throughout her life, and is a worthy adviser to Sen. Obama.

As an aside, on this day of all days, would it be possible for us not to desparage the Kennedy family, many of whom have given the "last full measure of devotion" to this country.

It is nice to see that you are quoting George Bernard Shaw. This is usually erroneously attributed to RFK.

George Bernard Shaw also said "Good writers borrow, great writers steal"

what, exactly, has kennedy done that would even remotely qualify her to hold national office...being well-born?
08:19 AM on 06/05/2008
After Barack Obama supporters spent the entire primary season talking about avoiding dynasties (i.e. Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton) who does Obama appoint to head his search for VP? Kennedy CAROLINE KENNEDY. What has she done to deserve to head this committee besides being born as a famous first daughter? Can we get some kids of other famous Democratic Presidents to handle all the other jobs in the Obama administration? Because apparently Obama thinks "dynasties" know best...
08:38 AM on 06/05/2008
How demeaning of ALL American women? Do you have no conception of Caroline's accomplishments?!

As a highly respected Constitutional attorney who has written groundbreaking books on "bil of rights" issues, most especially privacy rights, Caroline is much esteemed.

I also suspect she could be a conduit to one of Barack's most beloved mentors, Ted Kennedy.
10:21 AM on 06/05/2008
Caroline Kennedy has lived her life gracefully, using well the benefits of her birth in a family of wealth and political prowess and tragedy.

that said, she is not a highly respected constitutional attorney. she has dabbled in writing books (with co-authors) dealing with the law. she's not practiced law, nor taught law, nor even devoted her life to the study/writing of law.

I agree- Caroline Kennedy has no qualifications to pick the #2 slot. There are plenty of Democrats in political office who would be immensely more qualified. I am a Democrat and a woman but this decision of Obama's does not give me confidence in his leadership abilities. Caroline Kennedy has never even held an office.
10:27 AM on 06/05/2008
She's not PICKING a vice president. It's an advisory committee.

Like the group headed by James Baker that reported to the Shrub about what to do in Iraq.

He did just the opposite, you may have noticed.

I think that up to now Obama has chosen only good, qualified people to work for him and I don't think this is any different. He picked the people he wanted and his judgment has been sound so far, so why harp on his choices? Barack Obama knows what he's doing here, as usual.

Maybe Caroline should stay in the family...how about Shwarzy??? Maybe he'd change sides...

Do your research. Then come back and share your sources.

You have posted her, so I assume you (unlike most R's) know how to "google." Before you make such an assinine statement, perhaps you could have looked at the list of acheivements of Ms. K ?
07:55 AM on 06/05/2008
I for one and so grateful to Ms. Kennedy for coming out into the spot light, which she has never seemed comfortable with, to assist the Party and help us find the best VP candidate. I believe her to be one of the most respected women in the country, a women who has devoted her life to public service without any consideration for her personal ambition. The fact that so few who have posted are aware of her contributions just goes to show how she has quietly made a difference.

I am pleased and proud that Sen Obama showed the brilliance to ask her, and will respecct her recommendations.

Good that Obama has appointed a search committe for VP. He is pointedly telling the Clinton camp that he is NOT going to be bullied into choosing HRC as VP and that the Kennedys who supported him early are going play a critical role in his administration.

The signal is that HRC would be just a back-stabbing VP and that Team Obama is not going to take this lightly. Afterall they spent the whole year trying to destroy him politically and on personal credibility so why would one want such people on your team especially after the RFK comments. Smart move by Obama and I hope that he does NOT choose Hillary

The article was confusing about Johnson's role. He's supposed to be searching for a VP...sounds like he's lobbying for Clinton, not much of a search.
08:25 AM on 06/05/2008
You're confusing the two Johnsons in the article, methinks....
08:44 AM on 06/05/2008
It's not lot they're going out on a treasure hunt!! LOL!

They're attorneys. They'll be in charge of the "vetting." Johnson made serious mistakes when he helped select Ferraro for Mondale. And he learned from those mistakes. It was not Ferraro's background that blew up later - it was her husband's connections!!

Who the hell is Caroline Kennedy? Oh, that's right - it's the name thing. In marketing, they call that "branding". Good luck with that.
08:25 AM on 06/05/2008
I thought it was wicked clever, myself. The optics are awesome of this trifecta of "vetters", I love it.

Caroline Kennedy works behind the scenes -- which is why you don't know the causes she has served over the past decades.

More Tarot readings on VP candidates: Hagel and Webb both had extremely positive readings, especially Hagel. He had the Knight of Coins in the focus position, indicating good fund raising potential and the Ace of Swords (destiny) and The Lovers (a good match between candidates) also featured prominently.
Webbs reading was heavy on the cups, for some reason the Tarot deck sees this as a "sexy" candidacy. Also heavy on water, i.e. across the water, i.e. foreign policy strength. The thing that worried me about Webb's reading is that he had the same focus card as Hillary, the Queen of Swords. Out of 78 cards in the deck, I'd say that rates as a bizarre coincidence. Is either one of them a Virgo?
Barbara Boxer's reading was full of swords and screaming. I like her, but the cards emphatically said "no."

Another MAJOR beficiary of the S&L scandals . . . (drumroll) . . . Neal Bush. We don't hear much of W's brother any more, do we? Laura and GW even avoided publicly attending his most recent wedding.
