WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton and likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama met privately Thursday night to talk about uniting the Democratic Party.

"Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November," their campaigns said in joint statement.

The statement included no details of their talks, as pressure mounted for Obama to invite Clinton to become his running mate.

Robert Gibbs, an Obama spokesman, would not say where the former rivals met, except that it was not at Clinton's home in Washington, as had been widely reported.

Reporters traveling with Obama sensed something might be happening between the pair when they arrived at Dulles International Airport after an event in Northern Virginia and Obama was not aboard the airplane.

Asked at the time about the Illinois senator's whereabouts, Gibbs smiled and declined to comment.

Clinton returned to Washington after the last primaries on Tuesday night, when Obama earned the 2,118 delegates he needed to secure the Democratic nomination. She planned to announce Saturday that she was ending her campaign and supporting Obama.

The meeting followed Clinton's disavowal hours earlier of efforts by some supporters who have urged Obama to choose her as his running mate.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Even as Clinton was bowing out of the race, supporters in Congress and elsewhere were ramping up a campaign to pressure him to put her on the ticket.

Bob Johnson, the billionaire founder of Black Entertainment Television and a Clinton supporter, on Wednesday sent a letter to the Congressional Black Caucus urging the group to encourage Obama to choose Clinton as his No. 2. Johnson said he was doing so with her blessing.

Obama is seeking to become the first black president.

Clinton has told other friends and supporters she would be willing to be Obama's running mate. But her immediate task is bringing her own presidential bid to a close, and how.

In an e-mail to supporters, the New York senator said she "will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise."

Clinton expressed the same sentiment in a conference call with 40 members of her national finance committee, whom she urged to begin raising money for Obama and for the Democratic National Committee.

"She was in good spirits and totally supportive, without qualification, of Senator Obama and his campaign," finance co-chairman Alan Patricof said of the call.

It was a shift in tone by the former first lady, who announced 17 months ago that she was "in it to win it." Many of her supporters want her as the vice presidential candidate, in their minds a "dream ticket" that would bring Obama her enthusiastic legions and broaden his appeal to white and working-class voters.

On his campaign plane Thursday, Obama praised Clinton for inspiring millions of voters and said she had opened the doors for his two young daughters to imagine being president one day.

"We're going to speak to them but also listen to them and get advice," he said of Clinton's campaign team.

Obama also said he would welcome help from former President Clinton, calling him an "enormous talent."

Obama indicated he intends to take his time making a decision about inviting Hillary Clinton to join the ticket.

"We're not going to be rushed into it. I don't think Senator Clinton expects a quick decision and I don't even know that she's necessarily interested in that," Obama told NBC in an interview.

Clinton's move to formally declare that she is backing the Illinois senator came after Democratic congressional colleagues made clear they had no stomach for a protracted intraparty battle. Now that Obama has the delegates needed for the nomination, Clinton had little choice but to end her quest.

Some of her closest supporters _ the nearly two dozen House Democrats from her home state of New York _ switched their endorsements to Obama Thursday. Their public announcement followed two days of private phone calls weighing her options.

"She was just as spunky as ever," Rep. Charlie Rangel said of Clinton's mood on the calls, as her friends and supporters urged her to come to a decision "sooner rather than later."

Many of the lawmakers said it was important for them, as New Yorkers who are close to Clinton and helped launch her presidential bid, to work together to repair some of the rifts in the party.

For those of you who didn't know, last night's secret meeting between Clinton and Obama was done in a highly unlikely place, in the Secret Bilderberg meeting happening right now until Sunday in Northern Virginia in Chantilly at the Marriott hotel.

What is Bilderburg you ask? The reason you are not aware of this group is that they always meet in secret and the press is always barred from the event and the mainstream media never reports on Bilderberg.

Bill Clinton visited Bilderburg right before he was chosen as democratic nominee and then went off to become president. How much power does Bilderberg actually have? Is it significant that Obama went with Clinton last night?

Hmmm.. What a lousy joint press release....no plans for Obama to be at Rally on Sat for hands in air photo...Wonder how meeting went...

My guess is ...

Barak: OK, time to knock off the silly stuff
HRC: VP or a pox on your house
Barak: Let's meet again in 3 weeks, let's see how many supporters you wil have for your antics.., the race for the presidency was decided in our nomination. It is a dem year, gilligan could be my VP.
If you change your mind and want to play nice, I will continue to treat you with respect which you have not earned.
HRC: If I don't get the Veep, all my scandals and husbands dealings will no longer be shielded from Federal prosecution and public disclosure.....
Barak: Well, let's just forget about the Veep,

Hillary Clinton has already done irreparable harm to her country, party and Barack Obama, by this petulant sulk which would do any craven diva proud. She is a self-serving woman, who losing the nomination, will rain on any parade that involves her opponent. I am counting on Obama's wonderful intellect and cool head to try and overcome this. If anyone can, Obama will prevail.

YES WE CAN! Go Obama.

"Obama is seeking to become the first black president."

That's kind of an odd statement, don't you think? I don't think he's seeking to become the first black president. I think he's seeking to become president and happens to be black. Maybe that's naivete on my part, but I haven't gotten the impression that he was trying to make history. I keep getting the impression that he's trying to make the country better after eight years of Bush. Just mho.

It has emerged that Obama's press entourage were not informed of his secret meeting (Bilderberg) in Northern Virginia until they were literally locked inside a plane that was taxiing down the runway on its way to Chicago. Watch the angry press confront Obama's spokesman:

I went there out of curiousity and man, they are fanatical (sorry Karen), you would them to yourself: They really don't believe this do they? But they are believing it apparently, and she is responsible. Not all of them will vote for McCain, but many will. So sad. If they are anything like Joan Walsh, then we have our work cut out for us, but it's OK. I like a challenge. I will be working my tail off like I did last Saturday registering voters, and will continue to send money. Many other disillusioned voters will come over to our side from the Republicans. Obama will have a winning coalition come Nov. 4., and they will benefit from all of the new policies that will be instituted too. Can't believe they are willing to throw everything away out of spite. I'm ashamed as a woman today that other women can be so full of hatred. Where is the nurturing spirit? I'm a very competitive person too, but I learned good sportsmanship at our local rec center as a young girl. This is what I impart to my 11y.o son who plays Little League and likes to win too, but I told him from the very start, that he couldn't win all the time, and he has learned very well. Acceptance is the key.

I went to HillaryClinton.com! You ought to read those post! Senator Clinton has convienced those poor misguided supporters of hers, that this election was stolen from her and them! They are angry and in pain. I don't believe she can heal the damage she has done to her own party or to her supporters. It's just so sad to read those post! Long time Dem's who want to vote for grandpa Mccain who's memory is fried tomatoes, just because she has made them that angry at their own party and the DNC. she's called Obama a cheat so long, those poor supporters of hers think he has done a back door deal to get this nomination. How can she ever heal what she has done! What they don't understand is they will make her go down History as the WOMAN who polorized her party so much, that they refused to support the true nomanee. Her own supporters will set woman back years from obtaining another chance at the Commander and Chief chair! We are now seen as screamin , screeching, unstable, emotional woman who are not able to run a proper campagne and resign to the trueth of he out come with out P.M.S attacks! They just don't understand the harm they do all woman.

I watched Robert Gibbs, an Obama staff member,
get grilled by a whiney press corps because they
weren't allowed to follow or be included on the
private talk between Obama and Clinton.
I thought " How can fences be mended with a pushy
posse of intruders horning in?"
It's not as if they won't be allowed to ask questions or
be given information about the meeting.
It's that they are not entitled to shape or hamper
the event it before it 's even happened
And that is what the majority of the media has been
consistently doing ALL throughout this primary season.
Shaping the public's opinion of an event, real or imagined,
guessing at what's going on, and misinforming the populace
about what has actually happened before confirming it.
They edit and omit to their hearts content all because
they are racing to be first...not necessarily accurate.
So they didn't get to photo op or record the first "date/negotiation"
They were not withheld from doing their jobs.
They were thwarted from doing their jobs badly.

That's how we let them pick our last President - see how that turned out! And now they will pick our next President - if we let them. Surely we've learned something from the past 8 years. If we are that stupid we deserve what we get. However, how many people still believe that Obama is Muslim? And how many people still think Bush is doing a great job? Too many. Thank you MSM.

I just saw Feinstein on TV talking about the meeting -- what might have happened, etc. etc. And something she said that I think she and all Clinton surrogates really need to stop doing, and that's referring to Hillary's voters as "Hillary's Voters." After Clinton's Tuesday night speech, they all jumped in on the game of making 18 million people her chattel, and they're not! I've seen more than one high-profile supporter write blogs on how this kind of talk disappoints them, and that they don't want to be used in this way (Hillary Rosen, right here). This is very divisive. We're trying to move away from an us vs. them attitude, but this "Hillary's Voters" thing just keeps that going and slows the party unity that everyone claims they're trying to obtain (the very same people who promote Hillary's Voters). I'll venture to say that the vast majority of those who voted for Clinton are Democrats. And that's what they should be first. And that's what everyone SAYS they are first -- and in the next breath, it's Hillary's Voters again. Enough is enough. After she endorses Obama tomorrow night, this kind of talk really, REALLY needs to stop.

I sure hope Senator Obama and his campaign will not cave into Clinton's strong-arm tactics to force her way onto his ticket as VP. If Obama kowtows to this, he'll show weakness that others, including McCain and the Republicans can exploit against him in the GE. If he's too soft and too agreeing to almost anything the Clintons throw at him, people will take advantage of him. The whole world's watching his nomination process, including our Nation's enemies. If Obama appears too much of a soft touch or an appeaser against the Clintons and her remaining rabid supporters, what's to stop the Republicans, other world leaders, terrorist groups and thug regimes like Iran and North Korea from trying to push him around.

Don't do it Barack!!! Don't let HRC, her campaign and her remaining rabid supporters intimidate or bully you into placing her on the ticket! Be STRONG Barack, be your OWN man, make your OWN decisions for VP and pick who is BEST suitable for you personally, politically and geographically as VP. DO NOT allow Hill-Dog on your ticket as VP!

Obama/Richardson for 2008

I'm a Hillary supporter and I'll be voting enthusiastically for Barack this November. But as long as Obama's supporters take this vile, insulting, very republican tone the party will remain divided. 'Progressives' indeed! Throwing around needless, baseless insults is no way to pull this party back together. Barack showed a lot of class the last few days by respecting Hillary. Too bad his supporters, who were playing video games the past few years, judging by the clueless comments they make and repeat, cannot be as classy.

You Obamamaniacs will still be fighting Hillary through November. Face it, a big fraction of Obama people hate Hillary are you guys are far more divisive then she is. You are electing McCain and you can't see it.

HerbTee - I certainly hope Senator Clinton doesn't allow Obama to strong-arm her into joining the ticket. It's a lose-lose situation for her. If he loses it will be her fault; if he wins it will be because he overcame her presence on the ticket - she would get no credit from Obama's supporters (which includes the msm.)
