Variety:

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are bringing a live-action/animated "Smurfs" project to the bigscreen.

Sony obtained film rights to the blue-colored characters from Lafig Belgium via Jordan Kerner ("Charlotte's Web"), who is producing. David Stem and David Weiss, who wrote the second and third installments in the "Shrek" franchise, are in negotiations to pen the screenplay.

Kerner secured film rights to the Smurfs property in 2002 and had been developing a 3-D CGI feature at Paramount/Nickelodeon, which has an option to co-finance the Columbia/SPA incarnation and distribute internationally. The Melrose studio has yet to make a decision on its role in the film.

Way to spot a trend Hollywood! I wonder if we'll see the smurf with the backwards baseball cap or the smurf with the parachute pants, who'll inevitably spout the timely 'what'chu talkin' about' catchphrase while playing Pac Man and drinking Tang. Then Gargamel cam hop into the General Lee and jump a ditch with Mr. T and the chimp from BJ and the bear in glorious Tenchicolor. Keep rockin' that Pat Benatar, jive turkeys!

Hmm. Live action/animated picture should be interesting. I get a "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" feeling in regards to this or the new Alvin and the Chipmonks. As long as the Smurfs stay animated I don't think it could be to horrible. They better keep this thing G rated though at worst PG.
