Flashback: McCain Praised Carter, Called Brzezinski An "Invaluable" Adviser

During an interview with NBC's Brian Williams broadcast Monday night, Sen. John McCain hit on an idea: if he had to be tied to an unsuccessful president, so should Barack Obama.

Responding to a question about whether his candidacy would necessarily be damaged by the suffering Republican brand, McCain responded, "Sen. Obama says that I'm running for Bush's third term. It seems to me he's running for Jimmy Carter's second."

Then he laughed at his own joke.

But what's truly funny about McCain's "Obama equals Carter" line is that the Arizona Republican hasn't always been so down on the former president and his team of advisers. In a May 1999 interview with The Hill newspaper, on the occasion of his first presidential run, McCain was asked to opine on the recent occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In his written reply, McCain described Carter as having had "the greatest, the noblest and loftiest intentions of any president, but he never really understood how to use the institution to obtain his goals." In his brief response to the question, McCain also said that while the Iranian hostage crisis "brought him down and conveyed to the people he was a weak president. Whether he was or not, that's [debatable]."

Still, the new gambit lives on, with McCain repeating it on Wednesday during a CNBC interview. The line fits with the broader pattern of guilt-by-association that the Republican presidential nominee's team has been trying to make against Obama.

When Carter met with members of Hamas in May, McCain suggested Obama would have to distance himself the former president or be implicated in kind. (Even after Obama criticized Carter and reiterated his objections to Hamas, though, McCain still used Hamas's praise for Obama, since withdrawn, in a fundraising appeal.)

As a writer for the Israeli daily newspaper Ha'aretz editorialized in April:

"[McCain] wanted to say, here is an evil square: Iran-Hamas-Carter-Obama. He also meant: If Obama is like Carter, the weak loser, then McCain is like Reagan, his idol, and all that is left is to rerun the election results from 1980."

McCain's surrogates have also received the message loud and clear. Stu Sandler, deputy executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, told the National Journal that informal Obama adviser and former Carter Natoinal Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski could be used to stoke fears among voters for whom Israel's security is a top concern.

The only problem on this count is that Brzezinski was one of McCain's principal national security advisers during that inaugural 2000 run. Back when McCain was a fearless critic of dogmatic Republican thinking, he justified his hiring of Brzezinski as emblematic of his bipartisan streak. As the Tuscon Citizen reported in January 2000:

"McCain added more global and military experience to his campaign by naming a foreign policy team that includes advisers who have served under President Carter, a Democrat, as well as under Republicans Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush, the father of his chief rival for the GOP nomination."

"I am honored that Zbigniew Brzezinski will join my foreign policy team," McCain said at that time. "As a former national security adviser and a highly respected foreign policy expert, his broad experience makes him an invaluable asset to my team." In describing his key advisers, McCain continued: "I am very honored to have the support and advice of these recognized experts whose years of service to our nation and experience in international affairs have earned them the well-deserved respect of all."

So is Obama's respect for Carter aides like Zbigniew Brzezinski "well-deserved" or a danger to the country? It all depends which John McCain you ask.

Is McCain declaring opposition to Jimmy Carter's energy independence initiatives? Or is McCain deriding the lasting peace between Egypt and Israel that Pres. Carter helped orchestrate? Or is McCain just envious that Jimmy Carter's Habitat for Humanity is actually doing what McCain merely talks about relative to rebuilding in New Orleans?

To me, McCain's guilt-by-association comments show that he's just another in a long line of hyper-partisan Republican Presidential candidates, exhibiting more of the same "permanent campaign" mentality described in Scott McClellan's book.

McCain... more of the same.

The McCain of 2008 is not the same McCain of 2000. The party he leads has moved to the far right and he needs their votes. Which explains all of the flip-flopping he's been doing lately. He is walking a very fine line to hold his base together. The problem for McCain is that the majority of us don't want what his base wants. It's a change election and he doesn't represent any real change.

Actually the GOP has moved left if anything. Its why they have lost so much support. If republicans had governed like conservatives they would still have congress and Obama wouldn't stand a chance.

That was before John McCain had his ass handed to him by George Bush in 2000.

If he wants George Bush's voters, he's gonna have to talk like a partisan idiot. The problem is that he's lost his mind and believes this garbage now.

Well neocon ideology is easy to believe in now that it's been such a resounding success in all areas.

McCain-Lieberman, be careful when they give you praise, they might be tearing you down not long after that. I can see why they're best buddies, but they're going to have to be careful not to trust one another. Their admiration apparentely doesn't mean much in the long run.

I think the Jimmy Carter analogy to Obama is a mistake for McCain. I was 27 years old when Carter lost to Reagan .
My daughter is 25, her knowledge of Jimmy Carter is his humanitarian work and the wonderful best sellers he's written.
On the other hand, she has lived through the horror of the Bush administration.
I think this only highlights how stuck in the past McCain is.

Except it's not a horrible strategy if McCain's real goal is trying to firm-up Republican support and going after Reagan Democrats, people who fell for the sunshine-up-the-arse rhetoric of Reagan. Further, McCain's likely in no danger of any real analysis of what his criticism of Carter means relative to alternative energy and Middle East peace, since our media has the attention span of a cocker spaniel puppy.

I hope you are right about a younger voting class seeing Carter more for his post presidency than his time in office. Carter was hamstrung by his own party when dealing with Congress. He came in after the disaster of Nixon's resignation and Ford pardoning him facing a growing inflation crisis on the heels of one of OPEC's first organized oil shortages.

A weakend America reeling from both Watergate and Vietnam was having an identity criisis, not unlike today. Gas prices spiked and our position in world poilitics was in question, to say the least. Lies in governement and the results of our misquided war footing was described by Carter as a "crisis of confidence". This came to be known as his "malaise" speech, although he never spoke the word , and he was marginalized by being called a "doom and gloom" president.

He obviouslty was not up to the job but in many ways but he was only speaking the truth that most people did not want to hear, asking Americans to sacrifice by turning down their themostats. He was the first late 20th century president to feel the wrath of a dissillutioned American public which wryly nows puts down all comers to the office.

I hope the public has matured a little in 30 years and is finally becoming begin to face the problems we still face many that Carter tried to address but was not well-healed enough or tough enough to make much headway on.

Geez Louise, how many FLIP-FLOPS does this man have. Every time we turn around he's backtracked on something or other. What a big fat panderer. If Barack had this many flip-flops they would be spun into an endless loop by the MSM and the press.

Of course Ronnie Reagan had the Hostage Situation to use against Carter even going so far as to have Herbert Walker Bush make sure that the Iranians would NOT release the hostages , In return for this they agreed to provide weapons to Iran in spite of the Existence of an Emabrgo . Reagan was a smooth talking SNAKE who sold out his Class and started us on the downward economic spirial thanks to trickle down economics which has led to the greatest inequity in wealth since the 1920's .He single handedly quadroupled the National Debt .and created the BORROW and spend Republican Party which claims deficits don't matter . Maybe NOT to them but they matter to our kids and grand Kids who will get stuck with the Bills

They released the hostages on cue. Remember? Right after Regan took office.
Don't forget either how Regan busted the Unions. Shittiest President EVER for the working man. The sitting President is a close 2nd.

Carter was a disaster for the US and the world, for which we still pay the price today. The Carter period would be McCains idea of heaven. Remember the overthrow in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan all occurred under Carter. Sadam Hussein took over Iraq. Remember the Iranian hostage crisis. Carter started the hidden funding to Al Qaeda in Afghanistan to fight Russia. While Carter was in, Vietnam invaded Cambodia which in turn was invaded by China. Half the Central American countries were overthrown. Wars broke out in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Liberia, Somalia. Rhodesia collapsed in to Zimbabwe. Lebanon broke into civil war. The list goes on. Never compare Obama to Carter, it will scare off anyone who lived during the Carter term and can still remember.

To be fair...al Qaeda in Afghanistan was Zbigs idea to give the Soviets their own Vietnam. He armed and trained them, without a concern that they could use their new found knowledge against the US. He stated, what is worse, a bunch of riled up religious fanatics or taking down the Soviets?

To the board.

Now that Russia has gained it's strength back, the fact that Zbig is in Obama's campaign, is a HUGE concern.

Who knows what this man has planned for us and the rest of the world, since they lied about Afghanistan? Considering he accused the Bush Admin of being capable of planning a false flag attack to hit Iran. When he himself planned a false flage attack on the Soviets and has written a book discussion the Grand Chessboard. It could be a couple of decades again before Zbig & family allow us a proper view of history and our tax dollars on war campaigns.

No thanks Zbig and Obama....I'm not interested in politicians who lie about their intentions of war and aggression on the big stage.

Bush worked that angle quite enough, and it's my job as a voter to try and make sure that doesn't happen again.

He was responsible for upgrading our military so two future presidents could benefit.
As far as Al Queda--MIV and the CIA backed their initial make-up. Osama's code name was Tom Osborne. The Bin Laden family has been a CIA asset for over 30 years.
Viet Nam invaded Cambodia because Nixon made a hands off deal that permitted our oil companies to pump oil. Besides that Cambodia was a total bloody mess. Does the Killing Fields ring a bell, of coarse not.
Africa has never been in the US sphere of influence. Your god Ronald Reagan went into Central America with the help of bloodmeister John Poindexter and used the Salvadorian Solution. 2 million ethnic peoples were exterminated.
The gas shortage during Carter's administration was engineered by the oil companies upset with Carter's energy policies. Oil tankers were parked in the ocean off the Mexican coast. I saw pictures of them lined up.
Let 's be real for one second. If Carter had gotten the hostages out of Iran He would have had a second term. You know that the military operation to save the hostages was sabatoged by ?.
You also know that Carter negotiated their repatriation. You also know Reagan's people made them sit there as hostages until Reagan was sworn in. You also know that if Carter's energy policies had been instituted we probably would not have had our last TWO wars.
I submit Carter wasn't a disaster Your GODS Reagan and Bush I and II were.

"Carter was a disaster for the US and the world..."

Lol, Carter was a resounding success compared to the actual, and *comprehensive* disaster wrought on America and the world by Republican ideology. They were in charge of all 3 branches for 6 years, and still, unfortunately, control the presidency.

No president in history has sent everything into a tailspin faster than G.W. Bush. Remember the Clinton years before him? Obviously not. (Gas prices went down each year of Clinton's second term, e.g)

I agree that, at the time, Jimmy Carter has high ideals. He was just not up to the task. He was not able to deal in the real world. He had dreams and desires but did not have the ability to make them a reality or deal with the issues that confronted him. After his defeat and failed presidency, he worked to create a legacy. This all consuming desire cheapened his reputation and now he is just a disgusting figure. He went from being a good guy who failed to a disgusting man who would do anything for press exposure and praise.

I have been told that the linking of Obama to Carter was a Rove-like attempt to get the Jewish vote to support McCain and dump on Obama. Makes sense except McCain strikes me as fairly dumb and unable to pull this sort of ploy.
