The Dalai Lama distanced himself Thursday from Hollywood star Sharon Stone's controversial comment that China's earthquake was bad "karma" for its handling of Tibet.

Stone cited the Tibetan spiritual leader as her "good friend" when she made the remark at the Cannes film festival last month.

Confirming "yes, I've met that lady", the Dalai Lama told a news conference in Sydney he did not share her viewpoint on the May 12 quake that killed nearly 70,000 people.

Haven't been following all the celebrity nonsense, but I find it funny that a religious leader is having to distance themselves from a follower for once.

Okay, I think Sharon Stone has suffered enough for being "stupid in public".
She does good work on screen and this his her first gaffe.
Its not like she's a Lohan or Paris or something.

Just think how old is this woman and how old is Lohan and Paris.
She's just single handedly ruined herself publicly because the lacking of common sense or maybe she's already paranoid by some weird "religion".

That's because the Lama is just another politician with an agenda who uses religion to lie and manipulate the masses.

No, you are thinking of the Pope, Pat Robertson, and Fred Phelps.

Of course the Dalai Lama would distance himself from Sharon Stone's comment. The idea of 70,000 people dying because of the sins of their oppressive government is down right sick. It goes against his message of non-violence.

I don't think a human being with a little bit common sense will give the conclusion that the political climate of a country is relevant to the movement of the earth.
So what's will mother nature's answer to N.Korea for killing its own people and the US for killing people in other countries.

"The Dalai Lama wants to be the Supreme Leader of Tibet, Khomeni di it in Iran 20 years ago...." by mrterryrest

Terry: You are wrong!!! The Dalai Lama doesn't want to be the "Supreme Leader of Tibet," he wants to travel back in time and take Diana Ross' place as the lead singer of the Supremes. Please get your facts straight before writing.

Can't agree more. The political system in Tibet before 1950s is exactly like in Iran, religion and political is not separated the Lamas in Tibet enjoy the same level of real powers as their Iranian counterparts-the Mullahs. The Dalai Lama wants to be the Supreme Leader of Tibet, Khomeini did it in Iran 20 year ago, but I don't think the Dalai guy will get it in his life time cus Buddhists are more rational.
What a political speculator jumping up and down under the name of Buddha, he's in Sydney today I think hate to see his fat face on TV all the time.

Wow. You really don't know anything about Tibet's political or social history, do you? The Dalai Lama /was/ the official political leader of Tibet before the Chinese seized power. He instituted democratic reforms. The Tibetan government in exile now has an elected Parliament and Prime Minister thanks to those reforms. The Dalai Lama considers himself to be "semi-retired". His government in exile in talks with the Chinese government to allow Tibet to gain semi-autonomous status within China, rather than to regain full independence. It's hardly the death grip on power the Iranian government has.

The Lamas are Buddhist and extol the virtues of peace and non-violence ---something right-wing zealots abhor. That might explain why you and Boobaloo don't like the Dalai Lama.

And I've read somewhere that she's in mensa. Could that stroke account for her odd behavior?

The Buddha listed understanding how karma works in individual cases as one of the four "unthinkables", things which the unenightened mind can never understand. Also there is no such thing as "bad" karma, there is only cause and effect, which is what karma means.

Yes, strictly speaking you are right: karma is neither good nor bad. On the other hand, one does sow the seeds for either happiness or suffering through one's actions. Moreover, one can not reap the fruits of happiness from an unwholesome action or suffering from a wholesome act.

Bad karma is understood by many to mean an action that results in suffering for oneself in the future. Good karma creates the causes for happiness in the future.

Those responsible for implementing repressive policies in Tibet have definitely created the causes for their own suffering in the future, but it is impossible for most of us to know how and when that will manifest.

Instead of wholesome and unwholesome we use the terms skillful or unskillful, but your point is correct.

Well said, Arithrianos.
There is something similar in Vedic literature as well. I can't cite exactly where I read or heard it but it is something to the effect: the ways of karma are unfathomable.
What Ms. Stone said is no more, no less offensive than Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson saying that 9/11 was caused by American decadence and homosexuality.
