Shyamalan: "Happening" Is A "B" Movie

M Night Shyamalan

Director M. Night Shyamalan is best known for the Oscar-nominated global hit "The Sixth Sense," but fans should be under no illusions about his latest thriller, "The Happening."

"I wanted it to be a fantastic, fun B-movie," Shyamalan told Reuters in a recent interview about the eighth film he has written and directed. "The No. 1 thing is I want people to say: 'That was a really fun B-movie.'"

After his 2006 flop "Lady In the Water," which was slammed by critics and grossed just $73 million at the box office worldwide, some critics say the pressure is on the 37-year-old Indian-born American, so he has returned to what he does best -- scaring people.

Midway thru the Happening, I started routing for the plants.

Although I laughed mightily when Wahlberg gave his constipated with fear face.

Has anyone figured out how the plants commanded the wind in this movie?

And are there really any rural Pennsylvanians so stupid to think the wooden slat shutters are gonna stop gas? I knew they were bitter and clung to their guns and religion, but are they that friggin' clueless?

Watched "The Happening" last night.

WTF!!!!!! I was tricked by the bark humpers into paying $8.50 to watch an environmental movie!!!
Part way through you realize what’s going on. We are "hurting" the Earth. The plants are trying to send us a message.

"Green Planet" BS!!

I expected to see a commentary by Al Gore during the credits.

Directly after I sold my car and bought a bicycle. LOL

Just saw the Happening....it was so not happening.

Worst actress ever plays the wife.

I love Zooey, but she is much better suited for comedy and farce, than this kind of lame thriller.

More like D movie

I want my money back.

Horrible plot, horrible script. Terrible!
I like Wahlberg - too bad he's in this bomb!

The main problem with Shyamalan is that he is a very bad writer, and he just too proud to admit it. This has been quite evident for nearly all his movies (Sixth Sense being the exception). On the other hand, he is a very good director. So my advice to him, stick to directing and leave the writing to the professionals. But he is probably too vain or rich to heed that!

What would have been a more interesting story is what if the people committing suicide were the same people that believe they are going to be part of the rapture. Haha God's big cosmic joke! Psych!

If it's a B movie, shouldn't it have Bruce Campbell in it?

One of the worst filmmakers in the history of cinema - pretentious and narcissistic.

Wrong. The worst film-maker in history?

That would be Uwe Boll.

Amen. Hopefully this will tank, and people will stop funding his garbage.

I liked his films until "Lady in the Water". I don't know what he was thinking with that one. "The Village" was good but rather than trying to surprise everyone with a not so surprising ending he should have taken it in a different direction, like making the monsters REAL. Still a good movie though.

His best of course is The Sixth Sense. But I loved "Signs" and "Unbreakable". Both deserves a sequel. Signs because I felt the little girl was a half-breed alien. And the aliens came back to abduct all of the half-breeds. And Unbreakable because it is a classic superhero story and M. Night can take it sooo much farther with Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson playing the ultimate nemesis. PLEASE. . . before they get any older. These movies screams sequels.

I am one of those people who liked "Lady in the Water;" not as much as Sixth Sense, but still worth watching.

What is an "Indian-born American?"

*mind is boggling*
07:28 PM on 06/12/2008
Born in India, naturalized citizen? His parents weren't originally U.S. citizens, and he was born in India.

M. Night Shyamalan is a native Indian American, as opposed to Native American Indian. I'm sure the articles here on Ed Norton, Farrah Fawcett, Angelina Jolie, etc all briefly detail their ethnic backgrounds, as well as pointing out whether or not they are Americans. That's just responsible journalism so we know who's safe and who isn't.
