China Extends Lead As World's Largest Emitter of Carbon Dioxide, 14 Percent Ahead Of The U.S.

China is rapidly extending its lead over the United States as the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, according to figures released on Friday by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

The agency, which tracks global annual emissions, said the volume of carbon from China was 14 percent higher than those of the United States in 2007.

That compares to emissions from China that were 7 percent higher than the United States in 2006 and 5 percent below the United States in 2005, according to the agency.
