DETROIT — Al Gore made his debut in the 2008 presidential campaign Monday night, encouraging voters to back Barack Obama because "take it from me, elections matter."

The former vice president's speech at the Joe Louis Arena was part endorsement and part blistering attack on the man who denied him the White House eight years ago.

"After eight years of incompetence, neglect and failure, we need change," Gore said. "After eight years when our Constitution has been dishonored and disrespected, we need changes."

In 2000, Gore won the popular vote but lost the disputed election to George W. Bush, who captured Florida and its electoral votes after a divided Supreme Court ended the re-count of ballots. Since then, Gore has made combatting global warming his signature issue, and has been recognized worldwide for his effort _ from an Academy Award to the Nobel Prize.

Obama stoked lasting Democratic anger over the 2000 outcome when he recognized Gore as "the winner of the popular vote for president."

"You remember that," Obama said as the crowd of 20,000 erupted in raucous applause.

Gore is one of the most popular figures in the Democratic Party, but he stayed out of the primary campaign.

It's the second time Obama has rolled out a major endorsement in Michigan, where he did not campaign during the primary because its election violated the party rules. Obama is counting on a win in Michigan in November, but brought Gore and 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards to help validate him among Democrats in the state after skipping their primary.

"I'm grateful Al Gore came to Detroit tonight," Obama said. "But I'm ever more grateful for everything he's done in the last 40 years for this country."

Gore announced his decision in a fundraising e-mail earlier Monday. "From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected president of the United States," Gore wrote.

Gore told the rally that the Democratic primary was a contest between a strong and inspiring field of candidates, but "now we've made our choice."

He said Republican candidate John McCain deserves respect for all he has done for this country and for his willingness to debate his party on climate change and other critical issues. But he said the 71-year-old McCain's "age and experience" aren't the same as Obama's judgment, noting the Democrat's early opposition to the Iraq war.

He said Republicans criticized President Kennedy for being too young and inexperienced to be president as well, but Kennedy noted that Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Christopher Columbus all accomplished great things before they reached their mid-40s.

"I feel your determination after two terms of the Bush-Cheney administration to change the direction of our country," he said. He accused Bush of myriad missteps, including a botched response to Hurricane Katrina, economic problems, foreign policy mistakes and allowing lead-tainted toys and poisoned pet food in from China.

"Even our dogs and cats have learned that elections matter," he said. "This election matters more than ever because America needs change more than ever."

The Republican Party pointed out that Gore's 2000 running mate, Sen. Joe Lieberman, has since left the Democratic Party and become an independent and is backing McCain.

In response to Gore's harsh critique of Bush, GOP spokesman Alex Conant said, "This election isn't about changing the past, it's about changing the future. It's telling that half of the 2000 Democratic ticket endorsed John McCain early in the campaign, while the other half waited until Barack Obama had been the presumptive nominee for weeks." Obama clinched the nomination on June 3.

Obama and Gore were introduced by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who backed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primary. She held up a navy blue pump and said, on behalf of women everywhere, that she was proud to say she's supporting Obama.

She was loudly booed at the mention of Clinton's name, and Obama chastised the crowd for that when he spoke. He said he's a better candidate for having run against Clinton.

"She's tough," he said. "That's why this race took so long. She's a fighter. And we need fighters in the Democratic Party because we've got a lot to fight for."

Mr. "No Controlling Lagal Authority" should show Obama how to shake down the Chinese for campaign money. Al Bore should stick to what he does best: flying around in his Gulfstream preaching to the rest of us that we should be riding our bicycles to work. And that's the Inconsistent Truth.

I was looking forward to the day when this endorsement will finally come. This is another milestone in Obama's historic march towards the Presidency. I'm sure Al Gore feels a lot of passion and pride in Obama's run, being the first elected President of the United States not to take office (we all know he won the popular vote back in 2000) and seeing the 8 years of disaster than ensued after that nightmare of an election, I'm sure he will work his heart out to ensure that that does not happen to Obama. Democrats are more united than ever and our party has never been in a stronger state. Mr. Gore's endorsement is the icing on the cake in what was an epic nomination battle.

There is another fight that lies ahead of us but we are prepared for battle and ready to take this in a landslide. We are going to do to the Republicans what the Celtics did to the Lakers, just watch.

Obama 08.

On behalf of all Republicans and McCain supporters out there let me say THANK YOU AL GORE! After wathcing the implosion of the Kerry/Edward campaign with your and Michael Moore's endorsement, I have to say I am giddy with glee seeing that both of you half-wits are now endorsing Obama. It's like watching the kiss of death on both of his cheeks at the same time!
By the way Mr. Gore, we need you to move your hybrid out of that handicap parking spot and please tell your driver he can't smoke pot in front of the front door like that! Oh, and by the way, driving that hybrid does not "offset" all those candy wrappers and McDonald's bags you left lying in the parking lot so please get those cleaned up before you leave. Thanks buddy!

He may have sounded enthusiastic, but with the delayed response time in making this endorsement, I can hardly believe it was Heartily Given.

Okay, so there you have it, that's the best and the brightest that the Democrat Party has to offer, endorsing Obama. Now, what was the media reaction to this? Well, it was predictable and worse.

This guy is the absolute kiss of death for his own party. You could take the combined IQ of this guy and Obama and some of the others that are running this show and it would not equal that of a pencil eraser.

I've read a lot of silly comments on this blog, but yours takes the biscuit. Are you seriously suggesting that Al Gore and Barack Obama are stupid? I suppose G. W. is considered the smart fella around your place....

I can't believe Obama let this happen. I cannot believe Obama let Gore endorse him publicly. That is a curse. That is a curse worse than if Bill Clinton endorses you. Now some people are out there saying, I think it was David Rodham Gergen and we have the sound bite of this, David Rodham Gergen is out there saying the best thing would be is if Obama let Clinton and Gore run his administration, the global warming aspect and so forth.

It's downright foolish and politically immature for Obamaccolytes to be booing Gov. Jennifer Granholm when mentioning her previous support for Clinton. As a life long dem, I have never heard nor seen a crowd boo another candidate after conceeding and endorsing (BHO) as HRC did. I suggest you pouting winners who like to gloat check out the political maps put up by Time and CNN today. There are only 5 states out of 50 that are considered pro-BHO, and the vast majority believe it or not are leaning toward McCain. Even CNN said tonight that it was astonishing McCain's appeal among the indys even though in the same surveys they say they detest Republicans.

Its going to take every dem. to get BHO elected. I know many dems who are just checked out and don't even plan to vote. If you guys are going to boo everytime someone tries to make nice to you, then forget it, bring it on. You want a dem vs. dem fight you got it. Let the war continue. You can't win without HRC's supporters.

Obama and MOST of his supporters know that and want your support. The boos for Granholm's support of Clinton were pretty scattered it sounded like and not indicative of the whole crowd or the bulk of Obama supporters. There are still a few soreheads, but then the HRC camp has a few holdouts too. Hopefully, we'll all come together as good Democrats soon. McCain is really not a viable choice for Dems - too much is at stake to pretend otherwise.

Meanwhile, I'd take CNN poll data with a grain of salt - Wolf and the boys are mostly in the tank for McCain. Go to

for a better analysis of poll data.

What is all this "I'm not going to vote" nonsense? I've heard this more than once lately. Exactly how is that supposed to help? Have they LISTENED to McCain? 4 more years of corporate sponsored G.O.P. lies is what we really need, right? If more democrats had just gone & voted the last two times...My God, when will people wake up?

So there are a few hard-core idiots in both camps. If we can't forgive 'em, let's route around them.

It's not "You can't win without HRC's supporters." It's, none of us can win if we hand McCain this election. I can't imagine that even the most hard-core and aggrieved HRC supporters really wish that on this country. Senator Clinton knows that. She's said as much.

I get that there are some Clinton supporters who aren't ready to hear this from any Obama supporters. But why aren't they ready to hear this from Sen. Clinton?

You can't win without HRC's supporters. The Economist's analysis of election shows that just 25% of HRC's voters defecting to McCain in swing states will seal the coffin for BHO. Today the CNN poll already shows that defection taking place at 25%. And you guys sit in front of cameras and jeer and boo and then you don't understand why people would defect to McCain because you (us) can't understand why your fellow dems just don't shut up and love you. Forget worrying about the chads, Florida 2000, the forgotten ballots; Your own immaturity, lack of decency and respect for your own hardworking dems will sink party unity and the election. I just wish HRC had the guts to run as an indy right now, take the 51% of dems that voted for her and bury BHO's election chances once and for all by August.

You were really onto to something there until your last sentence. Your rationality turned on its head when you called for Hiliary to run as an independent and take her supporters with her. So you, I assume a democrate, want John McCain to win. 4 more years of Bush is just what the doctor ordered I guess..

If Al Gore had won his home state of Tennessee in 2000 like all incumbents do when running for President, then there would never have been a Florida, never been a Bush, never a war in Iraq, and a President Gore with a more positive outcome for the country than today. You can't blame Bush for this one: Gore even threw in the towel and nary put up a fight to count the votes in Florida.

Good old fashioned politicking keeping Tennessee in the fold and a take no prisoners fighting spirit is something Gore sorely lacks. He's the Jimmy Carter of the left: a good ex Vice-President who's a better leader out of office than in.

I totally agree. What promises did he get for this endorsement. Because Al Gore is present where the money flows. He made millions from his environmental endeavours, and that's ok. But he said he will stay out ot politics , but the Obama campaign bought him again. He certainly didn't do it out
of good old fashing commitment and because it is right, or he would have come out much earlier.
Especially since Obama does not even run on the environment and never mentioned what he would do to resolve the oil crisis, because Obama will stay away from all voter unfriendly high volatile subjects.

Please stop prattling on and get your facts straight. He didn't say he would stay out of politics, he just said he would stay out until the nomination process was tied up - WHICH HE DID. Obama does have a comprehensive plan for the environment which includes investing 150 billion dollars and creating 5 million new GREEN jobs. Obama went to a car factory in Detroit and told the workers that they had to cut emissions from their cars. How much more volatile can you get? So WHAT IS YOUR POINT???????

I think Obama is gonna have to dumb down a little for the main stream electorate. Shorter sound bites and to the point - such as "Mark my words - I will CUT taxes for Americas middle class" "The Rich and big corporations got their tax cut under bush - now it's time for everybody else to get theirs". You get my point. Short meaty soundbites are what dumb people like me want to hear. Hell, we don't have time for anything else. And, payroll taxes especially are a burden and real concern to the everyday American.

Get your tax plan across and you will have the Whitehouse.

Well, I'm one of Obama's biggest critics, but trust Al Gore completely. If he trusts Obama, this makes a huge difference for me. If it impresses me, it should impress a whole lot of other undecided critics too.

You're probably right.. Some short powerful sound bites to put out there for those that don't take the time to listen to him. I watched the entire Al Gore endorsement then listened to ALL of Obama's speech last night via Obama's livestream since MSM cut it all off after Al Gore was done (only MSNBC covered it Live). But Obama said some really excellent things in his speech that I wish others could have heard.

Even Hillary voters would have really liked what he had said last night! It was great to hear and as Obama said great praise to Hillary (was very moving), Gore stood up and applauded while the crowd cheered.

It was a fantastic speech of excellent hope, direction, and promise... sadly I only watched it livestream and unable to share it with others.

I have deep fear that we will never have an honest vote until they actually hand you a receipt for your vote. A paper trail that can not be stolen.

Ohhhh excellent point! Did you see that video now on Google video called "UnCounted" ?
It not only discusses the 2000 elections but the 2004 & 2006 elections and makes one scared as h3ll what will play out in 2008. It is not only votes being miscounted or manipulated but voters constitutional rights to vote are taken away...

Scary times...

Al Gore is a stark reminder to every American of what direction the country might have gone in had the 2000 election not been hijacked by the supreme court.

The analogy will be simple:

Make the same mistake and elect McCain OR Have a "do over" and pick the right one this time!

ELECTIONS MATTER!

"After eight years of incompetency..."

Isn't that precisely it? Incompetency has become a mandatory part of the job resume for people with big dreams. If Obama can change this and make it fashionable to be smart again then I will be eternally grateful.
