WASHINGTON — Joe Lieberman is fast becoming the Democrats' public enemy No. 1.

The four-term Connecticut senator, who came tantalizingly close to being Al Gore's vice president in 2000, not only has been campaigning for his pal, presumed Republican nominee John McCain, now he's publicly criticizing the Democrats' standard-bearer, Barack Obama. Lieberman has strayed before, most notably switching from Democrat to independent in 2006 to hold onto his Senate seat after a Democratic primary loss.

But the latest betrayal has upset Democrats, who often answer in clipped but polite tones when asked about Lieberman. The reason: The independent still caucuses with the Democrats on most issues except the Iraq war, and he holds their slim political majority in his hands.

"There's a commonly held hope that he's not going to be transformed into an attack dog for Republicans," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., an Obama supporter.

Lieberman has wasted no time in questioning Obama's positions on Iran and Israel, two topics on which Lieberman and McCain agree. Just one day after Obama clinched his party's nomination, Lieberman joined Republicans on a McCain campaign teleconference call assailing Obama following his foreign policy address to a leading Jewish group.

Lieberman accused Obama of blaming U.S. policies for "essentially sort of strengthening" Iran.

"If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state."

Later that day, during a budget vote in the Senate, Obama led Lieberman to a corner of the Senate floor for a pointed private conversation. Without elaborating, Obama told reporters the chat was about politics. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had a similar private conversation with Lieberman.

Story continues below

For his part, Lieberman said he assured Obama he would avoid personal attacks.

"I said, and we agreed, that any time I get out there mostly I'm going to be talking positively about John McCain _ and anytime I would take issue with Barack Obama, it would never be personal because I have the highest regard for him personally," he said.

Still, Democrats were irked. Lieberman seemed to be breaking new ground _ shifting gears from simply promoting McCain to taking shots at Obama.

"I'm glad that Barack Obama had a direct conversation with Joe," Sen. Dick Durbin, Obama's fellow Illinois senator, told reporters. "I hope that Joe will realize that even though he's a friend of John McCain's and feels differently on the war, there are so many other issues Barack stands for that have been a part of Joe's career."

Lieberman's Connecticut colleague, Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, said he's heard McCain talk about keeping a civil tone to the campaign.

"It might be a good message for him to convey to his supporters," said Dodd, also an Obama supporter.

Obama had backed Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. After he lost to Ned Lamont, an anti-war candidate, Lieberman defied party leaders and ran as an independent in the general election. Leading Democrats _ Obama, Dodd and Kerry among them _ then backed Lamont. Lieberman was re-elected with support from the GOP, including praise from the White House and fundraising help from prominent Republicans.

Oddly, Lieberman befriended and dispensed advice to Obama when the Illinois senator arrived in Washington in 2005.

"We have established a very good relationship," Lieberman says. "I have a lot of affection for him."

Call it Lieberman's version of tough love.

The Connecticut lawmaker is willing to speak at the Republican convention this summer if McCain asks. He also has been mentioned as a potential McCain running mate.

Democrats have reason to tolerate Lieberman's actions. If he were to caucus with the GOP, the balance of power in the narrowly divided Senate would slip away, especially with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., battling brain cancer. Democrats need Lieberman to maintain their 51-49 Senate majority.

Beyond Iraq, Lieberman tends to vote with Democrats on major issues.

"Joe and I have known each other 40 years," said Dodd. "On almost every issue, Joe is a mainstream Democrat."

There is speculation that if Democrats bolster their Senate majority this fall, they could seek payback by stripping Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship.

While there's no serious talk afoot about punishing Lieberman, Kerry said, "I can't tell you what happens next year."

Traitor Joe as McCain's VP choice would be wonderful!

Maybe those with more knowledge of election history can tell us if there has already been someone who lost elections as VP for both parties. That would be so sweet. Guess he wouldn't have the stones to resign his senate seat before the election.

Lieberman would make a great VP for McInane - Joe finishes most of his sentences when they are seen together in public anyway.

Joe is a spy for Mossad and his handlers are trying to get him to help pull off a pre-emptive stike on Iran whether it is beofre or after W. leaves they don't care.

The amount of vitriol aimed at Lieberman is telling, even the article title --"Public Enemy #1 is odd, can't think of anyone worse? By stigmatizing Lieberman with the canard that he is for Israel first, it unconsciously reinforces the old libel that ALL Jews, by extension, are disloyal to their country and cant be trusted. That a US Senator could be smeared this way day in and day out and have his colleagues and the liberal media sit silently is a terrible thing. I'm already starting to hear the same accusations being thrown at Sen. Feinstein. Coincidence? Real progressive should stay alert about this issue.

No, not all Jews are Israelis first and Americans second, but this one is.

AIPAC has twice been busted for harboring spies too. Joe is in bed with those Neocon criminals too.

You want to defend your right to practice Judaism, I'm good with that, but let's be CLEAR.

ISRAEL IS NOT A STATE.

Got that?

We the People have NO DUTY TO ISRAEL.

THEY ARE AN INDEPENDENT STATE AND SHOULD SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF BEING A BAD ACTOR. And they have been the very worst of actors since their illogical inception that required displacing an established state so they could have their "historical" home. Israel should be southern Germany. End of story. Unless you think this should be the United Indian Nations instead of the United States. It's the same flawed logic behind Israel.

It'd also be easier to back them if they didn't use the Holocaust as a Carte Blanche to commit any atrocity they feel like committing against their neighbors.

Joe Lieberman would gladly let this country be turned into a radioactive wasteland if it meant Israel walks free. Count on it.

If I lived in this traitor's district, I'd be pissed.

Whenever you wonder why Joe Lieberman is still in the Senate, just look carefully at the political consultants Ned Lamont, a shoe-in for the position but new to the political arena, hired to manage his campaign. He trusted his consultants, they let him down.

Lieberman did not win the Connecticut election. Ned Lamont's political consultants lost it for him but are unwilling to own up to that clear fact.

There's not a reason in the world why Lieberman should be in the Senate other than Lamont's consultants' mismanagement.

Look at the consequences.

the last time a Dem spoke at the repub convention, he looked like a complete ass. lieberman should consider where he's going with this. the Dems won't want him around, and the repubs consider these guys traitors and want them around even less. they'll use them for the press they can get, but then they're history. is Conn REALLY going to vote for this self-important fool again?

Lieberman is an Israel firster and a mouthpiece for AIPAC.The Iran issue is 100% Israeli, Iran is no danger to the US. Make Israel adhere to the standards that it and the US want to impose on Iran. Israel refuses to sign the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty ,which Iran has done. Israel refuses to allow IAEA inspections of their nuke facilities, which Iran has done. Israel refuses to comply with any UN resolutions, which the US protects it from. This should be brought up everytime the word Iran is spoken.

"If Israel is in danger today it is not because of us foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical, terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Israel."

It should have read like this:

"If Israel is in danger today it is because of US foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Israel is a fanatical, terrorist, expansionist state and has a leader and a leadership that constantly threatens to extinguish the state of Palestine."

Maybe I would not go to that extreme, but it might be worth reminding folks that the U.S. encouraged and helped Saddam Hussein wage war against Iran. It might be worth reminding that the U.S. toppled in the 50s the quasi-democratic Iranian government ran by Mossadegh, to protect the interest of oil companies (what else?). CIA operative Kermit Roosevelt wrote a book about it. Then a dictator, the Shah, was installed to pilfer the country and hand over the oil with some nice commission for his own pockets. Thus was born the islamic fundamentalist revolution that bit the world in the ass.

Yes, actual history brought to the forefront! The examples you raise are what everyone should realize is why we are so despised in many regions of the world...and why there are many actions, past and present, of US foreign policy not to be proud of.

I understand that it's the right thing to do to be friends with Israel. But part of being a true friend is telling them when they're wrong. Palestine has as much right to exist as Israel. How Israel is treating the Palestinians is paramount to Apartheid. Besides, the Israelis have one of the toughest militaries in the world, they don't need us to serve as big brother. Did you see "Munich?"

Did you see the movie Hezbollah in Lebanon, summer 2006? The IDF (that should be IAF) got its ass kicked by basically a militia of a few thousands. At some point, Israel had a decent army. Btwy, a lot of the IDF myth is due to the fact during the the big wars they fought, they had U.S. intelligence assistance, and most of their military was foreign trained, including many USAF pilots, etc., facing off lousy-trained Arab armies armed with obsolete Russian weaponry. The loss of the IDF myth was probably a very big loss of their deterrent power. Maybe that's why they want us to attack Iran.

It seems like the newest crop of soldiers are best at killing civilians from airplanes and helicopter. When it comes to mano a mano combat, you should have read all the pathetic soldier accounts in the Jerusalem Post in the summer of 2006.

So Israel is hanging tight onto their nukes.

He man be a liberal Republican, but not an Independent. Obama help him get elected and now he is stabbing Obama in the back. I have a hard time respecting that kind of loyalty. Say and do what you can to get into office and then everyone can go to hell.

What? The erstwhile senator from Israel as VP?

Never gonna happen, but if it does, that's fine.

This dipstick is toxic waste. Might as well have Bush on the ticket.
