AFSCME, MoveOn Ad Targets McCain On Iraq War

WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

AFSCME was the foremost Union backer of Clinton. Now they have taken a step forward and attacked McCain, but as yet have not mentioned Obama.

Ms Clinton on the other hand has suspended her campaign but as yet has not criticized McCain.

Come on folks take that next step. AFSCME endorse Obama. Clinton attack McCain.

With all the money that Move On generates, they should know that this ad is going to draw instant rebuke from most people. I know the punch line even before she says it. Dangling a baby and playing straight to the empathy card is laughable. As I do agree that McCain will lead the US into another conflict to prove his legitimacy as a president protecting America, this is a weak ad.

At first I thought the same, but upon reflection I think there is a demographic with whom this ad will resonate profoundly and at the same time it will in no way diminish our committment to Obama.

Contrary to other posts here, it is NOT just Democrats calling to reinstate the draft. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel began calling to reinstate the draft in 2004. And many top military officials have been calling for since we went to war in Iraq, some saying it will be necessary to maintain our presence there.

Veteran suicides are rising steeply and a U.S. health official says suicides may end up outnumbering combat deaths. The military keeps lowering standards for recruits just to meet recruiting goals. They are accepting more recruits without high school diplomas, recruits who are not as physically fit and are taking more convicted felons. Beginning in 2005 Army officials were told to not get rid of recruits just because of little things like drug abuse, alcohol. poor fitness and pregnancy.

I have two young sons. I do not want them growing up in a world of war or sent to fight because we elect some old man who is more schooled in military action than diplomacy and sees negotiating as "weak".

Gee, if this woman were an Islamofascist, her aspiration for her darling baby would be that one day he would blow himself up and take as many nonbelievers with him as possible. Maybe they should run an add with her terrorist counterpart.

She is too intelligent to even use the term islamofascist which come straight out of the NeoCon propaganda mill. It is only for dullards
05:44 PM on 06/18/2008
Oh right, I forgot... there are no terrorists, and the ones that are terrorists aren't Islamic fascists - they're Christians like Tim McVeigh. This kind of talk is just fear mongering. 9/11 was a stunt perpetrated by the Bush administration so that they could steal oil and trample the Constitution. Obama will make peace. All he has to do is sit down and reason with Ahmedinejad. There's no need for war. We just have to show the terrorists that we mean them no harm, and then maybe they'll be nice. Right?

Who's the dullard? And who lacks the intelligence, you dullard?

And if she were a neocon, her aspiration would be that her son grow up to drop a nuclear bomb over Iran and Syria. But hey they won't stop there, as there are plenty more Muslim countries.

Your genocidal tendencies are showing.

And hey did you ever respond to my questions last night? Prove to me that Saddam had any link with 9/11, and that he was about to attack the US. Better hurry before your commetns get scrubbed. Again.

LOL what a troll.

If it were up to Democrats like Charlie Rangel, we would impose a draft.
This woman's child's choice would then be Iraq or jail.
Vote for the Democrats.
11:46 AM on 06/18/2008
If we had a draft dimwit this war would have been over before it statrted. I have a 19 year old son and Bush and McCain can't have them either to fight this illegal war.

By all means, please vote for Democrats who will impose an iron clad, all inclusive draft of poor and wealthy alike. Then if the ugly neo con necrophillic thing called the republican party tries to start another war, a truly frightened poplace will get off their overfed asses and take to the streets. Hell, they may even revolt and send the neo con republican thugs to jail where they belong.
Yep, ol' Charlie knows what he's talking about!

Cheney, Bush and all the NeoCons avoided the draft. It would have been better had Rangel had the courage to oppose the war outright. This was a dodge by him so he could keep peace with the Clintons and the Schumers and now the NeoCon suck ups or trying to throw it back in the face of the Democrats.

This seems very cute, but what are you going to do if we are attacked in the future by some rogue government when Obama is President? Are you going to say the same thing???? If so, Obama might as well give the keys tot he white house to those fools in Iran when he meets with them.....

Hey, "if we are attacked in the future" and Obama is President we would actually go after the people who attacked us. We certainly wouldn't be flying the relatives and funders of the head of the organization out of the U.S. and returning them to the shelter of Saudi Arabia where most of the attackers came from and pretending that some entirely unrelated nation had something to do with the attack.

Why do the NeoCons hate America?
05:40 PM on 06/18/2008
Exactly. Obama and a select, well chosen staff of very savy folks will pin point bin Laden and crew. If they can take them alive, they'll be transport them to the Haque where they'll be tried for Crimes Against Humanity.
Hopefully, his justice deptment will thoroughly investgate Bush, McBush, et al.. and when they find the evidence, put them on trail for Crimes Against The People of the USA and the Middle East. The Hague and other world courts will just have to wait their turns.

Do you really think people can't distinguish between justifiable and nonjustifiable wars? Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and did not possess weapons of mass destruction.
02:50 PM on 06/18/2008
Obama is willing to take out members of AlQuaida in Pakistan if we can locate them and Pakistan will not act.

There are places and times when military intervention is justified and times whan it is not. Iraq was one of the times in which it was not.

I come to Huff-PO to add my opinion. It is rarely in line with most of the opinions here. I get insulted for them by other posters, but that's just water off a ducks back.
I do not like this ad for a few reasons:
1) It is obvious that the the military is currently an all volunteer force so in the event of a war in which this child could participate, he would have to want to go. Is a future draft out of the question? no, it isnt but highly unlikely considering the current conditions today.
2) The message is a based on a quote taken out of context, in other words, manipulated to show it in it's worst possible format. Not that the right is impervious to this, they will do it too..
3) MOVEON.org. This organization is a despicable out of control organization that should be completely ignored. I think it would be wise for the democrats to wash their hands of this scum
09:58 AM on 06/18/2008
moveon.org is like a puppy dog wanting to please Obama. They will do anything to get his approval.

I do not like the ad - another ad that feeds into fear and using our children. I am sick of the manipulation.

fyi - I have grandchildren and the ad didn't change my vote for McCain.

fyi - I feel it degrades what we have to do in the country - my father, uncles, etc. defended this country in WWII, my grandmother had 4 sons in the war. I am sure she didn't want her sons to go. What would have happened if they didn't go to war??????????

If we are to avoid the mistake of the people your relatives fought against in WWII we must not let leaders lie to us about being attacked. That was what Bush did. That was what Hitler did.

I was a child on a farm and the mother in the farm next to our got the news while she was in the fields that her son had been killed overseas. It was terrible but we the fight was justified. Not this war.

Interesting question! What would happen if most of the people in the world suddenly became sane and refused to go to war!
Maybe the suddenly sane could set aside some nutty little island where those parents who love to hang gold stars representing dead daughters and sons in their windows, might live out their lives.
They could reserve a section of their island where their sons and daughters could go and kill each other...
And the mothers on both sides could go to church and teas and proudly boast of their selfless scacrafices...

Not. Great Ad. I have never contributed to Move.On but I will send them $25 dollars today.
09:24 AM on 06/18/2008
This isn't over the top at all- many, many mothers feel this way. My aunt once told a military recruiter who called the house looking for her daughter that no, he could not speak with her and that she would personally bring her child down to the recruitment office once B u sh gave up his own daughters to the war effort. They never called again.
09:22 AM on 06/18/2008
This is a great ad ! It tells the truth about the way any sane mother would feel about her child going off to a senseless war. An endless war like the one we are now involved in. It cuts right to the heart of what the NeoCons have in store for our children and grandchildren. I commmend moveon and other groups for hitting the Republicans right where they live on this issue.

What issue? We have a volunteer army. The only calls for a military draft have come from a Democrat, Charles Rangel (Chuck Hagel called for a national service plan, and one choice would be the military).

There are sons and daughters who are being forced to do 2, 3 or 4 tours in Iraq. There is a record number of suicides among service members. Do we hear about THAT in the ad? Noooooo. Just some vague concept of a future draft, maybe, based on a misconstrued comment from John McCain.

MoveOn is so stupid it's infuriating.

I don't know. I hear all the commentators say it's "over the top". I am no expert on what's gonna go over or not. It is kind of a scary thought, BUT I don't see what's wrong with it. It tells everyone that according to one of our candidates, it IS possible to still be there in 20 years or more. Who the hell wants that?

Not completely trusting the MSM's opinions, considering their bias, and simply going by my gut feeling and opinion, I think it's a great ad and that it should run.
08:38 AM on 06/18/2008
This is a great ad! It cuts right to the heart of what the NeoCons have planned for our kids. No womans that is a mother wants to see her child go off to war unless warranted. And since we can't trust those in power to be honest about the reasons for wars, we can't afford to elect another war and fear monger to the presidency. Bush tries to tout the fact that there have been no terrorist attacks since 911 but he and his cabinet were the cause of 911. They ignored intelligence and let it happen, so that they could beat the American public over the head with FEAR, FEAR and more FEAR. I'm glad to see moveon. org and other groups doing to the Republicans what always do to Democrats.
