David Duchovny and wife actress Téa Leoni are moving to New York. They've listed their 6,578-square-foot Malibu ocean-view home for $12 million and expect to be settled back East before their children return to school in the fall.

Leoni has been itching to move back East for some time now, and the Malibu fires -- their home was not damaged but was in the mandatory evacuation zone -- tipped the scales for her, sources say. The two-story house being sold has two swimming pools -- one a regulation lap pool. There are five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a separate gym. The 5 1/2 -acre property includes membership in the La Costa Beach Club. There is a two-room guesthouse over a three-car garage. The house was built in 1996.

The property sits two doors from one bought earlier this year by country singer Kenny Chesney. He paid $7.4 million and then put the house back on the market at $7.95 million about six weeks later. It remains unsold.

Like that picture that is second from the bottom - for all of the money that having a private lap pool speaks of, it still reminds me of the "community" urinals you can find at some county fairs and in some hole-in-the-wall country bars...

The back of the house kinda looks like the house on Larry David--complete with ugly furnishings. I wish them well, though.

A little story about David Duchovny:

Some years ago, he spent a number of seasons filming the X Files in and around Vancouver, Canada. Now Duchovny would often express his extreme displeasure at the amount of rain that would fall on the fair city of Vancouver. Well, one day he made the mistake of voicing this pet peeve to the local media. Now native Vancouverites are fiercely proud of their town and accept the rain as part of its character, and the reason that their part of the country is so green with rich and diverse vegetation, so they naturally took exception to his remarks.
Now Duchovney's favorite watering hole was a bar and strip club called Number 5 Orange Street.
When his disparaging comments were heard by the management of Number 5 they took out full page ads in the local newswpapers announcing that he was permanently banned from their club.
Rumor had it that Duchovny was not amused.

Not only was he not amused, he moved the whole operation to Hollywood

And he effectively killed the golden goose. Production costs were much higher in Hollywood which contributed to the eventual demise of the series. At the time it was produced in Vancouver the Canadian dollar was wort 67 cents American.

In Vancouver you can capitalize "Canucks".

Their Malibu place hardly looks conducive (or safe) to raising children (or adults) with that five-yard "yard" dropping off into a sheer cliff... Twelve million? First thing to do is bulldoze the property over that cliff.

Wow! What would sell me on the concept of paying $12 million for a house would be that range hood and garbage disposal highlighted in the offering.

New York like LA is overrated. New York used to be the financial capital of the world only to be supplanted by London. New York's financial genius has proven to be well not so genius. Crane accidents due to inspectors on the take rank lower on the risk scale than fires and earthquakes. Good luck to them.

You'd rather live in London than New York? Regardless of financial center status, London doesn't do too well in quality of life surveys. Plus it's turning into a huge slum with pockets of the super rich. (I read this in Newsweek's international edition last month, so I may be misinformed.)

That Malibu house looks like it's two inches of rainfall away from being on the bottom of that dirt hill.

New York City, yuk! It looks so old and overprices. San Francisco's 10 time better.
