CSI may not have won the title of "America's favorite show" (that, of course, went to "American Idol") — and it wasn't even the top-scripted series in the US for the 2007-2008 TV season (that honor went to "Desperate Housewives"). But a new study reveals that it's the most popular TV show in the world.

The New York Post reports on worldwide TV rankings:

'CSI" is officially the most popular TV show on the planet.

According to a new study, nearly 84 million viewers around the globe watched the CBS crime drama in 2007.

It beat out its sequel, "CSI: Miami," and "House," according to the ratings firm Eurodata, which ranks shows by their worldwide ratings.

With 61.5 million viewers, "Desperate Housewives" snagged the title of top comedy, while "The Bold and the Beautiful" was dubbed the most-watched soap in the world (26.2 million viewers).

The biggest show in the US, "American Idol," did not place because different versions of it are seen in different countries.

Of course it is.
What does it teach as a social norm?:

"science investigators are always flawless, non-political & completely ethical"

"any MEANS NECESSARY!!"

"abuse your suspects until you either throw them away ('oh, oops! now get out of here!')!"

"scripts that are approved by government agencies gets the director better access to affordable military hardware for further projects! - go along to get along!"

"we'll always catch you! so if we lie when we do it... would you know the difference if you expect otherwise?"

"nowhere to run! nowhere to hide! if you're HONEST, YOU'RE GRATEFUL FOR PERPETUAL SURVEILLANCE!!!"

Shows like CSI, House, Bones and Numbers are adult brain candy for me just like comic books were when I was a kid. Their intelligence and social value are relative. I remember when the number one show in America was The Dukes of Hazzard, so I see these shows as a big step up on the evolutionary scale of entertainment for the sake of entertainment. And compared to the utter embarassment and cruel competition of today's reality shows, they are works of creative and cultural genius.

woooohoo someone who likes the same shows I do and for same reasons, even though some of the storylines for House have gotten a bit out there.
I do hate reality shows, such a waste of air space and the American Idol bs...........yuck

Too bad the scripts are not as good as they were the first three years. Now they are hit and miss, more hysteria than investigation and science. The early episodes were great.

The late Gene Siskel described Wm. Petersen's effort in Manhunter as "another non-acting performance by William Petersen." Siskel was paying Petersen the highest compliment. In Charlie Rose's online archive he conducts a facinating interview with Brian Cox, who relates how well he and Petersen connected in that skin-crawly scene in Manhunter. Cox points out that Petersen is a product of the '70s theatre scene in Chicago heading up the Remains Theatre. People in L.S. were hearing a persistence eminating from Chicago. Their notoriety stemmed from having showcased so many edgy works (Mamet) and yielded so many edgy performances by this fearless breed of Chicago actors (including Sinese, Malkovich, Joan Allen, Laurie Metcalf and others).

Petersen's off-Loop theatre background meshed well with Cox's own theatre training in England, so that by the time we find them together in the Manhunter jail scene, both men were able to connect through mutual trust that each other would be all right in the other one's hands. Cox described the process as starting with a recognition, a sort of theatre shorthand.

It's great the CSI's are so successful. Some of the episodes of all three installments are brilliant. Still, I'd love to see Petersen mount another theatre effort, at least during off-season tv production. His level of fame and energy could bring in a lot of people who would not otherwise go to the theatre.

Sloppy proofing: should be People in L.A., not L.S.

Visually dark. Totally unbelievable. Utterly boring. I'd rather watch paint dry.

I like this Vegas original version because the actors are real, compelling and more involved in the investigative process than chasing perps. It's "Murder She Wrote" meets "Bill Nye the Science Guy". The other shows seem like the actors are caught up in their own egos. David Caruso has that smarmy tough guy snark and weighs a buck 70. Never makes eye contact like he's channeling 'Lt. Castillo' from Miami Vice. Then Gary Sinese is not convincing as a CSI know-it-all. BOTH Miami and NY characters seem to be caught up more in being cops than crime scene analysts.

Only about 1.2 Billion have access to a TV. Most people have never watched a TV or eaten food with silverware.

84 million?this is pretty reflective of our culture. that show doesn't really interest me, but just think what 84 million people could do within one hour? oh let's say march on the government or perhaps something more reformative
