Slate Reporter Attempts Viral Circulation Of Pro-Obama Rumors

Fight The Smears

First Posted: 06/26/08 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:35 PM ET

The Obama campaign, seeking to combat the spurious rumors that run amok online, has launched a campaign site named Fight The Smears, dedicated to the debunking of false claims and keeping the public truthfully informed. The effort stems from the Obama campaign's determination to avoid the sort of "swift boating" that befell the Kerry campaign.

But is this website going to work? Farhad Manjoo, who writes the "Machinist" column for Salon, has doubts, and builds an effective case against the effort, suggesting that it may end up backfiring on Obama.

In March, as part of a New York Times Magazine article on the science behind myth busting, I spoke to several rumor experts about Obama's efforts to fight the Muslim claim. In politics, conventional wisdom holds that the best way to neutralize a whisper campaign is to ignore it. The experts thought this was a bad plan, and they praised Obama's camp for aggressively pushing back at the Muslim rumor every time it's popped up in the news.

Strangely, though, Fight the Smears represents a step backward from many of the campaign's previous get-out-the-truth efforts. The site presents fewer facts to back up its truths than did facthcheck.barackobama.com, the comprehensive truth-squad Web site that the campaign launched last November (that site brimmed with links to sources debunking the Muslim claim).

What's worse, Fight the Smears violates a cardinal rule of rumor-debunking: When you're fighting a lie, don't repeat it.

To Manjoo, the flaws are part format, part strategy. Fight The Smears, as it is set up, is a list of entries that first present the smear, and then provide a link that leads to the debunking of the rumor. This is problematic on two fronts: first, the lie is repeated, in its entirety, right on the page; and second, the truth requires the user to make an additional effort to chase down the truth. So the website is actually doing a better job perpetuating the lies. But even if the campaign made an effort to "lay bare the truth," as it were, Manjoo suggests that it still may be of no help:

According to Norbert Schwarz, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, this presentation style -- showing the lie first, then countering it with fact -- often causes people to later misremember the lie as true.

Last year Schwarz and his colleagues Ian Skurnik and Carolyn Yoon showed people a similar "facts vs. myths" flier that the Centers for Disease Control had produced to set people straight on various false claims regarding the flu vaccine. The flier was formatted in the same way as Obama's anti-smear site: First it presented a myth about the flu vaccine -- for instance, that only older people should be vaccinated -- and then countered the myth with a set of facts (that young people with specific health conditions might need also need the vaccine).

Just after reading the flier, people easily remembered which statements about the flu vaccine were true and which were false. But when tested 30 minutes later, "their judgments showed a systematic error pattern: They now misidentified 15 percent of the myths as true," the researchers found.

Beyond this flaw in format is a flaw in the strategy - namely that the people who are most likely to visit Fight The Smears are the ones who are engaged enough in the process to know the truth anyway, and who aren't likely to "virally" spread the truth beyond a similarly engaged set of peers:

Polls show that belief in the Muslim rumor is confined to a few select demographic groups: Conservative Republicans, rural voters, and people without college degrees are most likely to think Obama is Muslim. Rumor researchers say that the best way to fight a myth is to take your refutation to the social groups who believe it; this way, you minimize the possibility of introducing the lie to people who hadn't heard it in the first place.

Fight the Smears turns that design on its head. It pushes the story to people who know the truth in the hopes that they have at least a few misguided friends who need to be saved.

So, Slate's Christopher Beam, believing that "rather than restate untruths about Obama, the campaign would do better to start some rumors of its own," has provided Obama fans with a viral email of their own, excerpted below:

From: [Redacted] To: [Redacted] Subject: WHO IS BARACK OBAMA?

There are many things people do not know about BARACK OBAMA. It is every American's duty to read this message and pass it along to all of their friends and loved ones.

Barack Obama wears a FLAG PIN at all times. Even in the shower.

Barack Obama says the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE every time he sees an American flag. He also ends every sentence by saying, "WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." Click here for video of Obama quietly mouthing the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE in his sleep.

...

Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.

Barack Obama has the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE tattooed on his stomach. It's upside-down, so he can read it while doing sit-ups.

Barack Obama is a DEVOUT CHRISTIAN. His favorite book is the BIBLE, which he has memorized. His name means HE WHO LOVES JESUS in the ancient language of Aramaic. He is PROUD that Jesus was an American.

Barack Obama goes to church every morning. He goes to church every afternoon. He goes to church every evening. He is IN CHURCH RIGHT NOW.

Interestingly, Manjoo's analysis makes one wonder if the Obama campaign couldn't use the inherent flaws of Fight The Smears to run a neat bit of political jujitsu by expanding this effort to include spurious rumors about John McCain. It could have the advantage of reinforcing Obama's commitment to "a different sort of politics" while harnessing all of the fallacies that Manjoo makes note of to undermine his opponent. Chances are, engaging both the McCain and Obama peer groups simultaneously would end up redounding to no one's benefit, but it could give web-users such an aversion to political rumors that the practice could be ended entirely. Still, in lieu of that, Beam's solution at least lends a needed dose of comic absurdity.

Keep fighting Obama; we will not be swift-boated. Your website of fight the smears is just fine. The only problem the repugs have is that they keep underestimating you, your supporters, and other voters who will change their minds when they see the real McBush.

"In politics, conventional wisdom holds that the best way to neutralize a whisper campaign is to ignore it."

This only applies if the whisper campaign doesn't get picked up by the media and covered 24/7. If I remember anything about the 2004 general Election, it was that John Kerry's biggest flaw was in ignoring the Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth" when they made their attacks.

Besides, the way that the site is designed, your eyes almost immediately go naturally to the Truth portion of each section. Open the page, and the first place your eyes focus on is the big blue letters that say NO SUCH TAPE EXISTS. This easily counteracts any issue of laying out the lie part first.

Ignoring lies won't work? Refuting lies won't work? Do lies always work? I don't know, but never under estimate the capacity of the American public to be fooled. I am not optimistic that the truth is able to set us free. That would require some signs of intelligent life on the planet that are not detectable at this time. However, a lousy economy and a brainless war may weaken the impact of the big lie this time. It may take a bigger and better lie than in all of recorded history to distract us from the desire for change that has taken hold. But again, I just don't know.

I disagree with this critique of Fight the Smears.

I AM A PERSON WHO BUILD WEBSITES and You Do It To Convey or Achieve certain Specific Goals! THIS WEB SITE DID ACHIEVE THE INTENDED Purpose!!

THIS ARTICLE BRING UP a LOT OF Psychological GARBAGE That I Disagree With!! THE NAME OF THE SITE is Fight the Smears . Com! Self Explanatory, Mission Accomplish. Every One Visiting already expect to see the “smears”, therefore the smears get discredited in the minds of all FAIR minded reader.

This Site Is FOR LAZY So Called Journalist Who just Does Not Go Out in The Fields and Seek The TRUTH; Like Joe Scarborough, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity FOX Noise ETC, That CONSTANTLY Repeat some kind of manufactured Lie or SMEAR directed at Obama.

JUST LIKE a Previous Blogger State: A lot of these rumors get repeated on television and in newspapers by reporters who think that prefacing a statement with "It's been reported that..." absolves them of any responsibility to track down whether it is true or not.

I find your analysis convincing. But the viral web site amuses me. Right now I am reading the bible with my hand over my heart listening to the Star Spangled Banner and pissing on a photo of George Bush.

By taking action to Boycott Fox News and their Advertisers, you are taking an important stand in restoring journalistic integrity to Fox News. In fact, you will be in the good company of concerned individuals who believe that Fox News should be "fair and balanced" instead of "biased and manipulative."

A great many Americans feel that Fox News has engaged in the intentional deception and manipulation of information in order to influence the actions and behaviors of their viewers. One example is Liz Trotta's gaffe that suggested Sen. Obama should be "knock[ed] off." These assertions and statements are unfounded and unacceptable.

So, take action and join the boycott! ... Enough is Enough - Then Clip and Past The Message in your blogs. Click on this link, now: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/the-2008-boycott-fox-news-campaign

Reformers don't fight like neo-cons, or they would be more like them. In the meantime, I will be looking for results of new studies of viral media and how rumors can be defused. This is a fascinating subject. When the news media keeps reporting on slews of rumors, I stop reading, watching, because it is cacophonic. Media should stick to the issues - the issues are getting lost. That would help the invasion of viral rumors enormously. Swift Boat attacks were on every TV station and every newspaper in the country. Political rumors are now part of info-tainment.
Didn't the New York Times report today that Exxon/Mobil has moved into Iraq?

I think it's a disgrace that in a nation founded on the principle of religious freedom, being called a Muslim is a smear. Millions and millions of decent, reasonable people are Muslim. We know that the Christians who murder doctors at abortion clinics do not represent all Christians. Why can't we understand that Islamic extremists are an abberation? Of course it would be politically lethal for Obama to point this out, but I hope that as a country we can learn this in the next generation or two.
06:49 AM on 06/19/2008
i agree, paprikapink...next thing you know, some presidential campaign will tell muslims that they cannot be seated where the media might notice them in the same camera shot as their candidate; now THAT would be a HUGE step backwards for the cause of 'religious tolerance'...OOOOOPS, i just caught the story on CNN...never mind...

I disagree with the contention that the strategy is flawed because people who already know the truth are the folks most likely to visit the site and not the rural, under educated, conservative Republicans who tend to believe the smears.

I think the strategy is designed primarily to reach independents, fence sitters, and moderately engaged voters who may have heard these lies but aren’t sure whether they’re true. When these folks get ready to get engaged this resource will be right there ready to help them sort truth from fiction. I also think the site is intended to educate Obama supporters about the lies that are out there and give them ammunition to debunk the lies. I think this is just about the best we can do to reach under educated, conservative, rural Republicans. Didn’t Obama make West Virginia his first stop after winning the primary? To a large extent we have to rely on Obama supporters in these communities to get the truth out to these voters. We also have to recognize that some folks won’t come around because they don't want to know truth (e.g., those folks who continue to believe Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11).

I disagree with this critique of Fight the Smears.

The contention that the format is flawed because it begins by listing the smears belies the self explanatory name of the site. By beginning with the smears you virtually kill two birds with one stone. Anyone coming to the site immediately knows that this is the list of LIES. Unless you want additional back-up to support your own debunking efforts you barely need to check the debunking link to establish the truth. By starting with the smear (e.g, Obama refused to wear flag pin) the visitor automatically knows the truth (i.e., Obama didn’t refuse to wear flag pin). In the context of a website entitled “Fight the Smears" recounting the lie in the manner it was told reinforces your assertion that it’s a lie.

The facts vs. myths flier is not a good analogy. With a website you automatically have people who are personally motivated regarding the subject. That is not the case in handing a flier to some random group. Moreover, the flier might be more effective if it were simply entitled myths and listed the myths. That eliminates any confusion and clearly imparts the contention that these are myths.

That site has about three smears on it and I need answers to many more. I think it may be a mistake. But they can't yank it now. Maybe they should update the suggested changes in this article especially regarding McCain and Republican info.
12:49 AM on 06/19/2008
...And the funny "Who is Barack Obama?" stuff. They should add it. It shows how stupid the whole rumor thing is and you get a good laugh. Comedians have always said the way they would get out of a fight in school was the turn it around on the bully.
04:43 PM on 06/18/2008
I don't think the website is so much for the consumption of the general public as it is for lazy reporters. A lot of these rumors get repeated on television and in newspapers by reporters who think that prefacing a statement with "It's been reported that..." absolves them of any responsibility to track down whether it is true or not.

Hopefully, by doing the research for them the Obama campaign can reduce the number of lies that get repeated in the press.
05:29 PM on 06/18/2008
I hadn't considered that aspect. But now that I have, I think you may be right.

There are no real reporters these days. All the print media seems to know is how to read an e-mail, cut and paste it into a story and call it an article. OR, read the news wires on their computers, cut and paste clips into a story and call it an article.

Hell! They don't even have to leave their cubicles to write a column, let alone leave the building.

Maybe we should consider a whispering campaign consisting of the TRUTH about the McCains that won't or can't come up in the niceties of the campaign.

Why not let the public know the words he's used about her. Her drug addiction, and his knowing about it. The Keating Five. The 5 planes he crashed out of incompetence. His graduating 3rd from th bottom in a class of over 850. And on and on. But nothing false.

The truth is Republicans worst enemy, anyway.

I'm all for the website. Times are a-changin' -- many ideas & traditions are fast becoming the new "Old wive tales" - including the one about not repeating a lie. Darkness thrives in secret - we say SHINE THE LIGHTS on these nasty fear peddlers. The best way to get rid of pests is to turn the lights up and watch them come out of their hiding places .... then swat them good.

People who peddle fear -- by circulating stupid rumors and smears -- do more harm than they know. They might think it's amusing, but it will create karma that comes back to them. It's always better to take the time and get the facts straight. Read the background info on who is telling the story. Do a little research - it's so easy now days with Google, Yahoo, etc. No excuse for passing on trash in email,, and even less excuse for clinging to old prejudices, fears, or things you suspect are probably false.

Yes, as long as you don't take one phrase OUT OF CONTEXT and present it as a complete sentence. This has been done over and over again by people who follow up their quote with, "Well, it's in his book." So are the words "I," "am," "a," and "Republican." That doesn't make Obama a Republican.
