WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama said Wednesday she was "touched" that first lady Laura Bush came to her defense after she was harshly criticized by Republicans for her February comment that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of the United States.

Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, later clarified her remarks, saying she had always been proud of her country and was particularly proud to see so many people involved in the political process.

In an interview last week with ABC, Bush said, "I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,' you know, is what she really meant." She said comments in a campaign are closely watched and can be misconstrued.

Michelle Obama told the women of ABC's "The View" that she sent Bush a note for her remarks.

"It took me a while to write it. It's like, how do I address her?" she said. "I said dear madam first lady."

Obama did not elaborate on the contents of the letter because she said Bush might not have received it yet.

"But I was touched by it," Michelle Obama said. "And that's what I like about Laura Bush. You know, just calm, rational approach to these issues. And you know, I'm taking some cues. I mean, there's a balance. There's a reason why people like her. It's because she doesn't, sort of, you know, fuel the fire."

At a campaign stop in February, Michelle Obama told an audience in Milwaukee: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential contender John McCain, later sought to capitalize on the remark, saying "I have, and always will be, proud of my country."

Michelle Obama, a guest host on the popular talk show, talked about the presidential campaign and helped the show's regular hosts interview actor Matthew Broderick.

She walked onto the set arms linked with Barbara Walters, one of the show's co-hosts. She joked with the other cast members Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd, giving them fist bumps as she joined them at the table.

"Wait," she told them after sitting down. "I have to be greeted properly. Fist bump, please."

Earlier this month, a Fox News analyst suggested that her affectionate on-stage knuckle bump with her husband, on the night he locked up the Democratic presidential nomination, might have been a "terrorist's fist jab."

"It is now my signature bump," Michelle Obama told "The View" co-hosts. "But let me tell you, I'm not that hip. I got this from the young staff. That's the new high-five."

Michelle Obama, 44, and her husband, 46, also appear on the cover of "Us Weekly" magazine this week, under the headline, "Michelle Obama: Why Barack Loves Her."

Barack Obama told the celebrity magazine, "When we started out on this campaign, we wanted to make sure that life for our girls would remain as normal as possible, and it's because of Michelle that they are so grounded. Nothing is more important to Michelle than being a good mother, and she works every day to instill in our girls the same values we were raised with."

The couple have two daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7. The issue hits newsstands on Friday.

Of all places, I would not expect The Huffington Post to be spreading the malicious edit of what Michelle said. There is a difference between "pretty" and "really pretty", "sleazy" and "really sleazy," but not, I think, between "lying" and "really lying."

Has anyone out there heard Cindy McStepford utter a meaningful sentence yet? She walks onstage, smiles, stands there looking like an accessory and then leaves. Of course, if she did say something, she'd probably get sworn at by the white haired midget with the maniacal grin. I think they probably keep her sedated so they don't have to worry about her actually having to come up with something coherent.

I don't know about "meaningful," but Cindy McCain did get in front of a microphone and camera (the one and only time she felt it was important in some way), and with much sarcasm intoned, "I don't know about you all, but I've always been proud of MY country."

I guess it never entered her head that she was born into wealth and privilege and with white skin, which sets her worlds apart from the rest of us who struggle against various obstacles nearly every single day of our lives.

Maybe her head is too full of botox or maybe just full of the Marie Antoinette "Let them eat cake" mentality to see the irony.

I like what Joy Behar said about her on Larry King last night.

She liked Cindy and Michelle but found Michelle much more warm and approachable.

It's probably true.

I am glad that Obama stopped joking about getting in trouble with his wife. He may not have meant to paint her as scary, but his joking did not help her image.

I don'gt agree. Peoiple are becoming so sensitive about words that we can hardly speak anymore. And I think the little stories he tells about his wife chiding him for this and that emphasize what a down-to-earth couple they are.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." Don't see why this statement is so controversial. First of all, the inclusion of the words "adult" and "really," qualify the statement. Second, the USA (or its people) has done many things that we should be proud of, but also many things that we should be ashamed of. So what's the big deal?

It's only wrong in that she has backed off of it for fear of how it will affect her husband. She said it and meant it and she should stick to it and expound on it...if she has the courage of her convictions.

I didn't realize she'd backed off from it. I didn't see what the problem was in the first place.

I'm quite sick of women being caught up in these men tell them to do, sit down, shut up, talk about the children, look good and don't show your intelligence - now that's what I call sexism - Michele has never said anything relative to policy issues - the right wing nuts who are haters and hate themselves will find anything to demonize - and what do the women do, fall right in line with their demonizations of them - Cindy McCain is following her husband and the republicans demands and that's why she keeps repeating her criticism of Michele - she hates herself and her esteem is quite low and she's thinks of herself as some barbie beauty wanting no competition from Michele - Laura Bush reminds me of stefford wife and has never said anything memorable - who cares if she attempted to defend Michele - he defense was quite hollow -

I, for one, would rather have 100 "angry" Michelle Obama's than one "starched and pressed" Cindy McCain. At least I know that with Michelle Obama, you'd get a genuine, thinking, honest person. Not some heiress who's never had to want for anything in her life. And honestly, I didn't care what Michelle meant by her original statement. I don't think she'd owed anybody an explanation, but given the political climate, I understand why. But look, I'm 48 years old, grew up in a segregated town, attended a school that wasn't integrated until 5th grade, which the teachers were not happy about at all. The local manufacturing plants and businesses still had "white" and "colored" bathrooms, if the the "coloreds" were allowed to use the bathrooms at all. So even if she had meant what the mouth breathers and Faux News insisted she meant, I wouldn't have blamed her one bit. Damn right, she should be proud. And if it was for the first time, then what a wonderful thing for our country that we've finally, at long last, come this far. Hell, I'd have bought her a beer for having the balls to say it.

Plus, I think she's hot.

She *is* totally hot, isn't she?

Oh, and I completely agree with you: she has every right to say if she is proud or not of her country. Why are so many sheep-le buying into this idea that patriotism means following blindly? It's as if just because AMERICA did it, it must be the golden will of God. Too few politicians speak the truth that there are many in power that DO do things that cause us to lose faith in country. To me, Michelle Obama is a REAL person who hasn't been brainwashed into thinking she has to shut her mouth and only say "nice" things. Good for her. More people should heed her example.

Laura Bush is a first class lady - and I admire her very much.
I think Michelle Obama will also be a first class first lady, but Cindy McCain is already acting like a dishonest person, and she'll find her words and acts will work against her.
Michele Obama is a bright, educated lady, and it shows.

It should be just "Dear Mrs.Bush" not "Dear Madam First Lady" but Michelle Obama will get all that straight in a snap, especially when she starts getting the mail.

While she's not the politician, the more I see/hear of her, the more I like/admire her.

The Obama's are real people, albeit accomplished.

Ok, Lindsay Lohan has more class than Cindy McCain. But yeah... I think that Laura Bush knows how much it sucks that the candidates wife has to run as well but doesn't get anything but jabs about her looks.

Every time I see a close-up, head-on photo of Cindy McCain, I think of the movie Rosemary's Baby--- specifially, the part where Mia Farrow finally gets to to see the baby, and, peering into the crib, she falls back in horror and says, "Its' eyes, its' eyes, what have you done to its' eyes!!??"

Yes, it's Cindy's eyes that scare me.

This is not a woman given to being in the public spotlight, and she's bound to make mistakes. Heck, look at all the dumb things people who've been in public life for decades say once they're in front of a mic. Macaca, anyone?

Laura Bush has experienced all the good and bad of politics. She shares that in common with Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain. It is their spouses who are running for office here, and Laura is a courageous person to speak the truth, and share her empathy. Cindy and Michelle will do well to speak positvely of their favorite candidates, but not to aggress against the other candidate or their spouse.

I pull no punches with officehilders or ex-officeholders. The spouses deserve their space.

If Israel can establish a truce with Hamas, are we no better?
