Obama And Race: Most Whites Open To Black President, But Hate Groups Growing

Obama Race Polls

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 06/30/08 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:35 PM ET

The Washington Post reports "an overwhelming public openness to the idea of electing an African American to the presidency."

In a Post-ABC News poll last month, nearly nine in 10 whites said they would be comfortable with a black president. While fewer whites, about two-thirds, said they would be "entirely comfortable" with it, that was more than double the percentage of all adults who said they would be so at ease with someone entering office for the first time at age 72, which McCain (R-Ariz.) would do should he prevail in November.

But the good news may stop there. "As Sen. Barack Obama opens his campaign as the first African American on a major party presidential ticket, nearly half of all Americans say race relations in the country are in bad shape and three in 10 acknowledge feelings of racial prejudice," according to the same poll.

Overall, 51 percent call the current state of race relations "excellent" or "good," about the same as said so five years ago. That is a relative thaw from more negative ratings in the 1990s, but the gap between whites and blacks on the issue is now the widest it has been in polls dating to early 1992.

More than six in 10 African Americans now rate race relations as "not so good" or "poor," while 53 percent of whites hold more positive views. Opinions are also divided along racial lines, though less so, on whether blacks face discrimination. There is more similarity on feelings of personal racial prejudice: Thirty percent of whites and 34 percent of blacks admit such sentiments.

Moreover, the Post reports in a separate story that Obama's historic primary victory "has also sparked an increase in racist and white supremacist activity, mainly on the Internet, according to leaders of hate groups and the organizations that track them."

Neo-Nazi, skinhead and segregationist groups have reported gains in numbers of visitors to their Web sites and in membership since the senator from Illinois secured the Democratic nomination June 3. His success has aroused a community of racists, experts said, concerned by the possibility of the country's first black president.

"I haven't seen this much anger in a long, long time," said Billy Roper, a 36-year-old who runs a group called White Revolution in Russellville, Ark. "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly nonwhite president."

Senator Obama will be our next president. Let's not get carried away with 'hate groups'. They are in the minority. I believe Obama's presidency will bring us all closer together. We are all one.

I'm not voting for a black man or a white man, but the man that I feel will work for the middle class and poor . A president that will research all angles before he jumps America into conflicts, a man that will pull us out of the failing housing market, our failing global market, oil, our jobs that go overseas. One that will stop selling America piece by piece. One that will make sure our returning solders have a paycheck, jobs and medical when they return from war. Sorry, it "aIn't" McCain. You bloggers who don't trust Obama, but you do Bush/McCain...i.e., you trust war, poverty, uneducated Americans, living in run down homes and neighborhoods, no jobs, and on and on. Good luck with that. Myself I'm going with up and out of this mess...not about race, but a prosperous America. McCain has been in the senate how long now? And just now he wants change!!! What a joke!!! I go with real HOPE/CHANGE. One that isn't seasoned and stewed!

No surprise there guess he is loosing the white vote because he is incompetent!

Nice..........
05:54 PM on 06/23/2008
...,& as we ALL can see, white people hold "competence" up as their highest priority.

Just look at our current President, if you need an example.

Well, thank god Sen. Obama is not "unloosing" (sic) the white vote! You never know where that vote is going to go to if it springs free. maybe to the candidate with a clue for a change.

obama could as much legitmately be called white - why the black definition? because people are simpletons
06:06 PM on 06/23/2008
One theory is that it is politically expedient to run as the "black candidate," as many believe that in today's politics, it is more of an asset (or non-issue) than a liability to run as a minority of some sort.

Golly, do you think the reason he calls himself "black" might have anything at all to do with the fact that for the past few centuries if you had any black blood in at all you were considered to be "black" in this country?

Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that if you are noticeably "black" and you call yourself white not only do you get rejected by the white community but the black community as well?

Or is this the first you two are hearing about this?

It is really amazing how american society saddles mixed race people with this totally unfair rule (once the law of the land but still to this day not "a" but "the" rule of perception) and on top of that when the mixed race individuals humbly go along with it and identify themselves the way they are expected to by society at large, then sho nuff that is not good enough either, if that mulatto guy starts showing signs of accomplishing anything at all some pompous dweebs show up in seconds flat and start accusing the *victim* of this utterly unfair status quo of playing his "race" to some kind of advantage.

But then I guess the abundance of mulatto presidents we have seen here in the US through centuries demonstrates that being half black really is a big advantage when you are running for POTUS. Oh wait that's not right...

Really? Which country do you live in?
02:51 PM on 06/23/2008
how acurate is this? 90%? thats hard to believe. plus, some people arent very honest when asked questions about race. they dont want to be called racist.

Do your own poll with people you know to grasp the truth, for the truth is not some poll but the life you live. This is not to be confused with one's perception of the truth or the life they live. That is a whole other bailiwick (people’s perception versus the universal truth) of complex details that befuddle and cause heads to itch from the inside stimulating a scratching movement by a hand raised to a skull encasing a perplexed brain, hosting a confused mind.

The details of life are there for all to see. Indoctrination passed by family and society at large robbed many of the natural ability to see things as they really are. An infant is indeed perfect in this way. The layers of life do exact a toll on innocence. Innocence and truth are one. The guilty has all sorts of mind games they play to appease their guilt. Guilt needs to be fed by spin otherwise, it would be too painful to house in the mind.

Some say Obama is the white guilt candidate. These people are saying that all European people are racists and those who are not are engaging in an expression of guilt. The raw stupidity in that premise reeks of something that takes the breath away and causes you to want to get far away from it. The guilty seeks to indict innocents of feeling guilty for something they do not harbor, but something the guilty does harbor, that is hate.

As a white southerner, and a republican, a descendant of "slave" holders of rather well-known plantations, I feel, perhaps, some guilt, but in any case, much sorrow about what my ancestors accepted as a necessary part of their way of life. At least one of my ancestors released his own personal "slaves" two years before the Emancipation Proclamation. I pray for them for what they did, and I pray in thanksgiving that my grandmother, mother and father had a love in their hearts for all American Black People, not just those who a part of our lives .

To the point, I am 100% for Senator Obama, because I think he is a great man, a great politician and statesman. He is a "black" Lincoln in type.

We Whites are a part-product of Black America, for our development as a country has been in tandem with that community. We have reacted, back-and-forth to the Godliness emanating out of each community. To kinow them is to love them.

In short, wed have come a long way, regardless of how the election could turn out. I just hope that Obama is the winner! Not because he's black, but because he is the best!
04:23 PM on 06/23/2008
I know I know...hard to believe that people might actually choose to vote against Obama for reasons other than race.
01:41 PM on 06/23/2008
Kind of funny, but have you seen the $3 dollar bills they're making of Obama? They show him with a turban on. I work at a restaurant and a customer showed it to me and I chuckled to humor him a bit. Then he said, "That's pretty good, isn't it?" "Yeah," I replied, "except the turban thing." "What do you mean?" he shot back, as if I asked him how to find the sky. "He's not a Muslim." "What do you mean he's not a Muslim?" still flabbergasted. I guess some people just can't let go.

"I guess some people just can't let go."

...and in death the fool was made to let go. Thus the compelling and lingering question, remaining, and answered through living, is not the certainty of death, which has already been proven, but the still uncertain for all, self-analyzing question of, are you a fool? Answering such a question will remain an individual pursuit for the foreseeable future, with no legislative solution on the horizon. Each is called in life to get to know the possibilities of self that enhance, invigorate, illuminate, and incite to meaningful action. Those not engaged in that challenging work or those who delude to think that they are, may find the foolishness in a life lived focused on the inconsequential that is made to be consequential by the anemic approaches of people in their avoidance of being foolish in living their lives. They may find the foolishness at the exact moment when life “shakes’ em off like so many fleas”, to paraphrase George Carlin.

In summation and conclusion, a fool need not let go for the natural order of things provides an irresistible solution for letting go. A fool needs to stop being a fool, which remains an individual choice affecting the quality and character of individual life and is possible only until -- the natural order decides otherwise.

Differences between the races are miniscule, cultural at best. We are not born afraid of others, we are taught fear. That fear keeps the powerful in power while keeping us from working together for a mutual good. Please. Not this time...

You're a racist if...

you, my friend, are correct.. when children play.. they do not care what-so-ever who they are playing with and what nationalilty they are. This rang true for me when my 6 yearold daughter told me she was marrying the neighbor when she grew up.. he's white of course..and i thought.. wow.. 20 or less years ago if she had said that she would have been told straight out to forget it and then given "The Rules"..now it aould happen without much ado!

Considering the pundits these days, race seems less of an issue/deal-breaker than age. Indeed, race should not be a deciding factor--people should vote based on the issues at hand, and on how the potential leader would decide those issues.

The presidential race aside, America once gave much credence to, and had much respect for, the wisdom and tradition of our older generations. Today's society instead worships youth.

I've heard, but haven't verified, that BHO, though partially of African decent, is more arabic than black and more caucasian than either.

Does anyone here know (and have the facts/links to prove) what BHO's actual heritage is? Just wondering.
01:59 PM on 06/23/2008
who cares? I'm not going to vote for him for reasons far more important than his heritage.
02:58 PM on 06/23/2008
Of course, people shouldn't vote for or against him because of his race.

His campaign, however, in one way or another, consistently discusses Obama's race. Therefore, what his heritage actually is is highly relevant.

As a white guy, I could go without seeing another ivy-league ("educated"?) white guy in the White House ever again. African Americans, even wealthy ones, are still feeling the after-effects of slavery and seem to have tendencies to reject class-based slavery and rich white politicians (with the exception of JFK, RFK) push slavery as a means to inject social order and national ferver for "Empire" at the expense of both U.S. and world citizens.

Hopefully, all the Southern and blue-collar voters can see through the hate/fear mongering fog and into a better life for all.
11:51 AM on 06/23/2008
Why should we care what color he is. The question is...does he care? If so...don't vote for him.
04:42 PM on 06/23/2008
Molly: I am afraid that he does, in fact, care. I have seen quotes from his book(s) which indicate that he cares to be seen as black, not as white. If the quotes are correct, and I have not verified them, then it leads me to believe that he does care about which race he is identified with, and which race he prefers not to be identified with.
Vote for him? or not? your choice.
05:34 PM on 06/24/2008
Are you seriously proposing that he has the option of choosing whether people see him as black or white?
11:36 AM on 06/23/2008
I still believe that this problem is cultural. Whites fear black and latino culture, not balck and latino people. They just aren't smart enough to understand the distinction because skin color to them is a reliabe predictor of cultural identification.

Obama is able to transcend race only in as much as he can escape being identified with those elements of black culture that my more ignorant fellow white people fear. This is why we always get those idiotic "articulate" and "well educated" statements - for some they are indications that he is culturally separate from the black community, and thus more similar. It's like when someone points to their friendships with black people as evidence of non-racist status. Often times they have both found some cultural common ground with the other that diminishes the percieved negatives of the population as a whole. This person is not A or B, because we share X and Y.

The Rev. Wright mess hurt Obama because it tied him back to the black community and to sentiments of racism within that community. Some then saw in Obama what they may have experienced or imaged with others, or with media stereotypes.

The simple truth is that we are simple creatures with little capacity for cultural relativity and inclusivness.
