WASHINGTON — Former President Clinton on Tuesday offered to help Barack Obama win the White House, although what work he'll do for his wife's former rival remained uncertain.

The Obama campaign is still smarting over some of Bill Clinton's criticism in the primary race, while the last Democratic president remains a popular political draw. But before the two can work together, they have to speak.

Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton have taken steps to join efforts in the last three weeks _ she met with him privately, endorsed his campaign and will campaign with him Friday. But the former Democratic president and the man running to be the next one haven't talked since the campaign ended.

Obama said the only reason they haven't spoken is because Clinton is traveling overseas. He praised the former president and said he's "looking forward to setting up a long conversation."

"He's as smart as they come. He's a great strategist. We're going to want him campaigning for me," Obama said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters as he flew from Las Vegas to Los Angeles for a fundraiser, Obama said he was not certain what Clinton's role would be, but said he was eager to have the former president's help and support.

"I think that just having somebody who knows American politics as well as he does and continues to be such an enormous draw will be hugely helpful," Obama said. "He's got a great following, including among a number of my supporters."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the 42nd president came up in a phone call between Obama and Hillary Clinton on Sunday. They talked about how Obama should connect with Bill Clinton in the future, Burton said.

Bill Clinton extended his support to Obama for the first time Tuesday in a one-sentence statement from spokesman Matt McKenna.

"President Clinton is obviously committed to doing whatever he can and is asked to do to ensure Senator Obama is the next president of the United States," McKenna said.

It's not clear what Obama might ask him to do. The campaign wasn't specific when asked.

"A unified Democratic Party is going to be a powerful force for change this year and we're confident President Clinton will play a big role in that," was all Burton would say.

Bill Clinton will not attend Friday's rally with his wife and Obama in the symbolic town of Unity, N.H. McKenna said the former president is in Europe this week to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, give speeches and work for the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Hillary Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee issued a statement after her husband's that didn't mention him. "Senator Clinton is very pleased with how quickly the party is coming together after the primaries, and she will continue to do everything she can to unite Democrats behind Senator Obama as our nominee," Elleithee said.

Bill Clinton was an outspoken critic of Obama during the primary race. He said Obama's opposition to the Iraq war was a "fairy tale" and raised questions about whether the first-term Illinois senator had the experience to lead the country. His remarks angered some black leaders who felt Clinton was dismissing Obama's historic bid, as when he compared Obama's win in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson's victories there in the 1980s.

Clinton fumed in response that it was Obama's campaign that "played the race card on me."

During one debate Obama snapped at Hillary Clinton, "I can't tell who I'm running against sometimes."

Bill Clinton wasn't the only spouse on edge over the competition. Obama's wife Michelle said of the former president in an interview with The New Yorker magazine, "I want to rip his eyes out!" before adding, "Kidding!"

The former president has been the most valuable personality in the Democratic Party, his political skills contrasting with those of other former Democratic nominees from Jimmy Carter to Michael Dukakis and John Kerry. But his angry outbursts while campaigning for his wife tarnished his image. Obama prizes a tightly controlled message and lack of drama in his campaign, which are not President Clinton's hallmarks.

Half of respondents to an AP-Yahoo News poll conducted in mid-June viewed Bill Clinton favorably. But those voicing a "very favorable" opinion of him dropped from 25 percent in December before the primary voting began to 16 percent in June. Still, the former president is one of the most popular figures in public life and he drew large, enthusiastic crowds when campaigning for his wife.

Democratic consultant Mark Kornblau said the benefits of having Bill Clinton's help outweigh the negatives for Obama. He said Clinton could travel to economically struggling states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan and talk about the prosperity under his presidency and promote Obama's vision.

"He can connect in parts of the country where Senator Obama may need some help, like the Rust Belt, and it will help in further unifying the party after a fractious primary," said Kornblau, who was a spokesman for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards. "The downside, as we saw in the primary, is that it's a little roll of the dice. But I think it's worth the risk."

The brain-dead press, which gave us the INVENTED narrative of Clinton "injecting race" into the primaries, will now serve up a continuous buffet of irreconcilable conflict between Clinton and Obama... while the two of them amicably talk through their lingering primary bruises and get on with a winning campaign.

Would the sheeple pay ANY attention to the drooling, conflict-obsessed commentariat if they reported, "Everything went well in their meeting, differences were resolved and Clinton will be making the following campaign appearances for Obama..."?

I agree.

Senator Obama is unelectable--by his sponsors' design--not even Bill Clinton could change that. Take a vacation--and return well before November, Pres. Clinton.

A more electable nominee may require your assistance.

Bill - they don't want you .Thats why Obama mentioned Reagan& Bush Sr's tenure and left you out, even tho' you created a budget surplus of billions with one hand , while you were fighting off the Repugs with the other hand. Thats why they called you racist for mentioning your friend Jesse Jacksons campaign , they want to make sure you are disparaged permanently..Bill, Obama is voting for FISA. He's already outtriangulating you , you can't keep up with his reversals - he's a man on ice skates.

Bill - read these letters- Obama supporters spit on you. Its a new party Bill, one that doesn't need you , Hilary or your supporters. They want to do it their way- believe them - they are capable of tapdancing on your heart with combat boots., they want to learn the hard way.
Go figger-

That's not true at all. Sure there are some who may not like Bill or Hillary, but there are far more who value them so don't YOU be fooled as there are plenty of Republicans who are trying to make trouble for the Dems.

Hopefully, both Bill and Hillary will join Obama in his campaigning this season and help him win the Presidency in November.

Not everyone feels the way you are portraying Obama supporters. You are looking at Huffington Post, not the country at large. What should we do to make you happy? Bill did not campaign well for his wife, in my opinion. He took everything very personally and sometimes seemed desperate. He lost his center. I think he would be a great campaigner for Obama, and I hope he does campaign. It is probably a bitter pill for him to swallow, though, because he wanted the nomination so much for Hillary. I do wish Clinton well. He had a high disapproval rating during all of this, but he will get back the approval of people who once supported him. We just can't help but like Bill Clinton.

The best way Clinton could help Obama may be by not injecting himself or be injected into the campaign.

Not only is it not important, it would be a mistake for Obama to have Bill campaign for him. Bill's ties to alleged con man Raffaello Follieri, who was arrested today, would be an unwelcome issue for the Obama campaign to have to deal with, to say the least. Apparently, Follieri promised the Catholic vote to the Clintons. That alone should have tipped them off.

From the NY Times:

"Raffaello Follieri, from San Giovanni Rotondo on the spur of Italy"s boot, is alive and kicking in his $40,000-a-month duplex on Fifth Avenue. Age 29, he used empty claims of church ties to befriend Douglas Band, a top aide to Bill Clinton. Band then smoothed the way to Clinton"s moneyed entourage, including the California billionaire Ronald Burkle.

That relationship birthed the unhappy union of Burkle"s Yucaipa investment operation, of which Clinton is a senior adviser, and the Follieri Group in a venture to acquire Catholic Church property Follieri said he"d get on the cheap."

another post by a Rovian plant pretending to be a Democrat. This has nothing to do with Clinton.
A lot of bad people have been in contact with people in public office -- including Obama. It doesn't make Obama guilty of Rezco's crimes even if Rezco' was his finance manager for earlier elections.

I'm watching Larry King, and Anderson Cooper just said they will be reporting about how the presumptive nominee will be asking his supporters to help with the debt of the candidate who has dropped out of the race.

Let me make myself clear: I will never support the ex-candidate financially. Never.

Let me make myself clear: The Democratic Party will unite with or without you, and the Democrats will win in the general with or without your vote. Generally, the values and vision of the party itself would be more important than who won or lost the primary nomination, but it's obvious that your disdain for Senator Obama goes a lot deeper than what some would perceive as a "normal" reaction to the party's primary election outcome. In fact, based on your profile and previous posts, one can conclude that your disdain may even be "skin deep." It's unfortunate that this is more important to you than the integrity of your party (if indeed you are a Democrat) and the well-being of your country, but I guess priorities do matter, even if the priorities are misplaced. We are very clear that you will never support Senator Obama, and frankly, by now, most of us really do not care. We have an election to win!

I had your exact atitude about supporting Hillary. The thought horrified me. But it won't hurt me to send 25 bucks to help pay of her debt. I think that she needs to, however, not ask us to pay the money she loaned her campaign. I work as a typist, and Hillary has lots more money than I do and the means to make more. So 25 bucks it is for her debt minus the self loan.

If you read something other than this you would wee that Hillary made statements to day telling her supporters that, if you cared at all about her policies and ideals that you never ever vote for John McCain, you must vote for Obama. When asked over again about Vice President she said I'm not looking for anything, that is completely up to Obama I am a senator I am returning to do my ob here and to do all I can to get him elected in November. Back off if you want a united party it starts with the people who won to quit complaining!

Hmmm.. Let's see. He campaigned for himself and is the only Democrat to hold the WH for two terms since FDR. He campaigned for HRC and she won twice (the most recent in a landslide)

They both campaigned for McCaskill (?) and raised money for her. She would not be the Senator from Missouri if not for them.

There are many others who benefitted from their fund raising, campaigning and HRC's own donations to their campaigns. Check with the DNC or google. Do something instead of spreading your ignorance.
