COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement's biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization's headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

The conservative Christian group provided The Associated Press with an advance copy of the pre-taped radio segment, which runs 18 minutes and highlights excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. Obama mentions Dobson in the speech.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy _ chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

"... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs for Obama's campaign, said in a statement that a full reading of Obama's speech shows he is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for families. "Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together," DuBois said.

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," labeling it "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."

"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson said. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."

The program was paid for by a Focus on the Family affiliate whose donations are taxed, Dobson said, so it's legal for that group to get more involved in politics.

Last week, DuBois, a former Assemblies of God associate minister, called Minnery for what Minnery described as a cordial discussion. He would not go into detail, but said Dubois offered to visit the ministry in August when the Democratic National Convention is in Denver.

A possible Obama visit was not discussed, but Focus is open to one, Minnery said.

McCain also has not met with Dobson. A McCain campaign staffer offered Dobson a meeting with McCain recently in Denver, Minnery said. Dobson declined because he prefers that candidates visit the Focus on the Family campus to learn more about the organization, Minnery said.

Dobson has not backed off his statement that he could not in good conscience vote for McCain because of concerns over the Arizona senator's conservative credentials. Dobson has said he will vote in November but has suggested he might not vote for president.

Obama recently met in Chicago with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of "American Values House Parties," where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs.

"Distorting the Bible" is the stock in trade of religionists everywhere. It is what they do.

Haaaaaaaa! The bible is one distorted lie after another. "And the Lord said, let there be Obama, and it was good."

One reason that causes evangelicals and other Christians to vote Republican is the fact that many liberals treat them and their faith with tremendous disrespect as you just have done. Republicans at least give lip service to their values and do not show hostility towards them.

Obama is winning over evangelicals because he has a perspective that is respectful and inclusive of others. He believes in trying to find common ground with various groups rather than conquer and divide, while holding true to his principles. Take a look at his speech regarding religion and politics. Are you kidding me? Dobson!!?? Who'S even listening to him but the few people from yesteryear. It took him 2 years to fingure out what Obama was talking about to complain? Get real. He does not want to support McCain publicly, but does not want to give up his old ideas. Never mind that his own church is moving on to more interesting topics (AIDs, immigration, etc.). What person that is not is under 70 or 80 is listening to him? This is Amierca where tolerancy is a given. We've come so far that a person like Dobson will not set us back. Who's the fruitcake? DOBSON!!!

Many people don't go to church today because of people like this. These are the pious ones of the world. There are many who control the thoughts of others with all of this religiousity.

That's a copout. There are plenty of churches that do not have pastors and members like Dobson. It's like saying you won't go to the store because you encountered several rude clerks recently, or quitting school because you had a few incompetent teachers.

Well, well, well. Dobson the main fruitcake of the so called "preachers", critical of O. Because we all know Dobson has a special line to God, and he knows "exactly" what the bible's interpretation is. I have to google Mr. Moral's position on the Iraqi war. For a lot of these "preachers". life begins at conception, and ends at birth. Once you are born, you are on your own. Wars? Health Insurance for children? Hungry people? That is not important, right?

Dobson isn't a preacher, he's a child psychologist. His main forum is radio and his books, although he is on television in some markets. He doesn't do Bible teaching like a preacher would, but started out on his Focus on the Family radio show years ago discussing family issues. Over the years, he has become increasingly strident and political, despite the fact that his show is called Focus on the FAMILY.

He has been in favor of the wars in Iraq and Afganistan from the start and fully maintains his support for these wars today. I know because I have written him a number of times on this issue discussing the biblical reasons that our invasion of Iraq, at least, was wrong. The response I receive is that "nothing will change Dr. Dobson's mind on this issue". He calls out politicians when he disagrees with them and participates in feuds with them. He has become a pathetic angry old man and really needs to retire.

Nope, not necessarily.

The people you reference don't care until the baby reaches military age. To quote a recently deceased comedian, "Then you're just what they're looking for. They want live babies to grow up to be dead soldiers."

Christians of good will need to stand up and speak out against the Dobson's of the world. The Dobsons of the world support the current manifestation of leadership of the Republican Party(not the average Republican)and the leadership supports unfetterered greed. The evidence of Christ's position of renouncing greed in all its forms is beyond contestation. Here are several verses where Christ uses strong language, metaphors and parables to reject greed-Matt 6:19, Mark 10:17-25, Math 6:24, Luke 16:14,15, Luke 6:20,24,25. You need to look at how often he speaks out against greed, the length he speaks about it and the strength of language he uses against it.

Christ says " it's easier for a camel to go throught the eye of a needle, than a rich man to enter heaven" Mth 10:17-25. He says the rich are" fat and prosperous now, but a time of awful hunger is before them." Luke 6:20,24,25 We know Christ never picks on homosexuals. But he does mention adultery often and so do the Ten Commandments. But Dobson and his ilk don't want to point out sins many of their own members may engage in, do they? The sins of the GOP elite are many. Here's just a sampling that is grossly underreported by the corporate mainstream media:

James Dobson did not found FOF alone. He was associated with that organization by someone else whose letter to the offending community was published years ago.

I have always kept a copy of his letter of apology to gays and lesbians:

You can google it. The man authored the book : Dobson's War against the Family.

Dr. Dobson resorting to calling names is not GODLY like at all. The word
of GOD teaches us to love one another. Being a lover of the word I can't
understand where Dr. Dobson is coming from with the name calling and his
hatefilled attitude. I would hope that he would read the seventh chapter of
Matthew, and begin to apply it to his life.

You are the ones distorting the Bible - tell me where Jesus stood with the state? When did Jesus argue against relief for the poor, prefering subsidies for the rich?

You evil religious creeps distort the testament of love into vitriol and hate - and money. And that's all you are in it for. That's why you vote republican.

Since when do we get fat and arrogant on the Bible, like all you well fed evangelical tycoons? Two-story golden dog houses. Secret sex with other men. You people are disgusting. Focus on the family? I wouldn't let my family go to a church of hate. Remember, according to the church in Rome, Mr. Dobsdon, YOU ARE A HERETIC.

Looks like Dobson wasn't getting any press lately so he had to start something.
