WASHINGTON — Hundreds of people have been arrested and 21 children rescued in what the FBI is calling a five-day roundup of networks of pimps who force children into prostitution.

The Justice Department says it targeted 16 cities as part of its "Operation Cross Country" that caps off five years of similar stings nationwide.

Many of the children forced into prostitution are either runaways or what authorities call "thrown-aways" _ kids whose families have shunned them. Officials say they are preyed upon by organized networks of pimps who lure them in with shelter or drugs, then often beat, starve or otherwise abuse them until the children agree to work the streets.

"We together have no higher calling than to protect our children and to safeguard their innocence," FBI Director Robert Mueller said Wednesday. "Yet the sex trafficking of children remains one of the most violent and unforgivable crimes in this country."

In all, authorities arrested 345 people _ including 290 adult prostitutes _ during the operation that ended this week. Since 2003, 308 pimps and hookers have been convicted in state and federal courts of forcing youngsters into prostitution, and 433 child victims have been rescued, Mueller said.

The cities targeted in this week's sting are: Atlanta; Boston; Dallas; Detroit; Houston; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Miami; Montgomery County, Md.; Oakland, Calif.; Phoenix; Reno, Nev.; Sacramento, Calif.; Tampa; Toledo, Ohio and Washington.

The problem of child prostitution has taken on a new urgency in recent years with the growth of online networks where pimps advertise the youngsters to clients. The FBI generally investigates child prostitution cases that cross state lines.

The cases aren't easy to convict.

In April 2006, for example, charges against a Nevada man resulted in a hung jury after his 14-year-old victim refused to testify against him. Months later, however, a second jury found Juan Rico Doss of Reno, Nev., guilty of forcing two girls _ ages 14 and 16 _ to sell sex in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and Oakland.

A University of Pennsylvania study estimates nearly 300,000 children in the United States are at risk of being sexually exploited for commercial uses _ "most of them runaways or thrown-aways," said Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"These kids are victims. This is 21st century slavery," Allen said. "They lack the ability to walk away."

IF I THOUGHT ANY AGENCY UNDER THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION...

Could do something right for a change, I might be able to think about this in positive terms. Given the way things are, I could only wonder: A) What the FBI's real motive was, and B) How they did it wrong and screwed it up. Sorry....

If they can keep doing this between now and November, McCain's going to be blown out by more than we thought.

Oh, that reminds me of Edward Rodgers, FBI agent. He "became a child abuse expert" after retiring from the FBI and joining the Colorado District Attorney's office. He wrote the manual on child sexual abuse. His daughters successfully sued him for 2.3 million dollars for his sexually abusing them from 1944-1965.

Also, reminds me of John Conditt, former chief internal watchdog at the FBI, who admitted sexually abusing several very young girls.

My guess is, that the people they busted in this sting were minorities. The huge child sex trafficking ring is going on at the very highest levels of government, and is apparently being protected. Remember Larry King and the Franklin Savings and Loan Scandal? Google it.

zizyphus,

I suspect an under-wraps epidemic akin to the enabling and cover-ups of the Catholic Chruch is just waiting to burst out sooner or later involving the self-appointed 'party of Christian family values."

"Family values" like the locals in THE HILLS HAVE EYES, but that's about it.

Yeaach.

Yes, I remember, and there was to be a piece played on TV that was bought up before it could air.
It involved members of congress/senate. I always wondered where the young people, who get
taken from the street and never to be found again, end up. There has to be something!

Well, now there will be a few 'super' delegates missing in Denver.

Sorry you made a mistake...there will be a few delegates missing in Saint Paul, MN. It's the republican party with Mark Foley the pedophile, Larry Craig the prostitute, adulterers and Pimps. So much for the family values and god fearing conservatism.

"Well, now there will be a few 'super' delegates missing in Denver."

I think you mean the GOP is most likely involved; just look at their actuall performance record in this arena, K-ration:

http://www.armchairsubversive.org

From where this independent voter and proud son of a WW2 US Marine is sitting, "K-BAR," it is your own vaunted "party of Christian family values" that has an issue with actually keeping their hands off of America's children.

The parallels between the GOP elite and the child molestation scandal in the Papacy is quite striking; must be something to do with the institutionalized sanctimony and moralizing authoritarian nature of the beasts.

Hypocrisy, thy name be GOP. Or is that "Gang of Pedophiles?"

It looks like we have a case of a 'Marquee Crime' The article says that 21 children were rescued and that 345 people were arrested including 290 prostitutes. So it sounds like a sweep of mostly adult prostitution operations that found a few child prostitutes in the process.

Compared to the US most other countries have decided to tolerate a limited quantity or form of adult prostitution to make it easier to enforce health precautions, reduce crimes against prostitutes, and to discover child prostitution. In most other countries some of those 290 adult prostitutes would have been likely to tip the cops about the underage competition.

This makes me sick. For 8 years DOJ did nothing. Did nothing , turned their heads in the banking industry, while their friends fleeced us...Now with a few months left in bushs term they are making all kinds of arrests ..Sounds to me like ,because of this late date, they are covering up for republicans. Makes me sick

Really? Then why did a close family friend of ours work during WW2 for the FBI from its office in *Buenos Aires?*

The FBI goes where the case takes them, and where their government commands.

And just in time to give die hard righties a sorely needed justification for going into the booth and pulling the lever for anything with an "R" next to it. You guys really pulled it out for the final. Too bad those twenty-one rescued kids are just the tip of the iceberg, huh?

Still, thanks for the effort. It's better than nothing, which we had just about come to expect.

wmbear:

Yes, I do think of ALL children, as every adult should. They are our gifts from God, they are vulnerable and do not knows the "ways of the world" and are physically unable to fight off an adult's advances, and they are our future and we need to be there for them so they don't ever become victims of these pieces of scum.

How can ANY adult even seriously consider having sex with a child? This is beyond abnormal, it is plain EVIL.

It's about time, and this is probably the tip of the iceberg. It's common knowledge that child-prostitution rings flourish, but nothing has been done. A good start.
