LOS ANGELES — Barack Obama raised nearly $5 million Tuesday at a celebrity-packed fundraiser that was the equivalent of the entertainment industry's coming-out party for the likely Democratic presidential nominee.

"He's my candidate, and I think you have to put your money where your mouth is," said actor Don Cheadle. Actor Dennis Quaid said Obama is "the Superman for everyone."

Obama's campaign refused to say how many millions he and the Democratic National Committee raised at the gala, but Democratic officials put the number at close to $5 million. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the numbers publicly.

Campaign officials severely limited media access to the event at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. No television cameras or photographers were allowed inside.

Obama, who is counting on Hollywood's reliable support for Democrats, appealed to the those in the crowd who might have supported his former foe, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The long primary, he said, "I know caused some heartburn and some frustration." He said he and Clinton "were allies then and we're allies now."

The guest list for the exclusive event, where top tickets cost more than $30,000, also included actor Jennifer Beals and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. Also seen was Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, who created two music videos for Obama during the primary season _ including one called "Yes We Can" that set music to clips from his speeches and became an Internet sensation. Singer Seal performed two songs.

"At last, someone has come along that is restoring my faith," Seal said.

Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee will share the money that was raised.

Shattering records, Obama raised more than $287 million through the end of May. Last week, he reversed an earlier promise and said he would not take public financing for the general election. The move lifts the cap on what he can spend and allows him to pour hundreds of millions more into his campaign against Republican John McCain. McCain has said he would accept public financing and has criticized Obama's decision.

The asking price for a ticket to the gala's general reception was $2,300. Tickets to a VIP dinner were $28,500. The DNC was to get the $28,500 donations and Obama was to collect the proceeds from the lower-priced tickets.

McCain and the Republican National Committee raised $7 million at a similar joint fundraiser in New York last month that was hosted by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The list of famous donors who already have given to Obama includes George Clooney, Paul Newman, Matt Damon, Larry David, Will Smith, Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey.

The Center for Responsive Politics, analyzing fundraising data released May 21, said Obama had collected more than $4 million from the movie, TV and music businesses. Clinton raised $3.4 million from those groups, and McCain collected $636,000.

McCain's boldface backers include producer Jerry Bruckheimer and "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels.

The entertainment industry gave $33.1 million to federal candidates in 2004, about 70 percent of it going to Democrats, the center said.

Along with the big names he attracts in Hollywood, Obama wants to win over the Los Angeles donors who supported Clinton in the primaries. In turn, he told his finance team Tuesday afternoon to help Clinton pay off her $22 million campaign debt if they are able.

No matter how much a Hollywood star makes, it has no effect on your pocket if you don't go t the movies.

I doubt you can understand most movies anyway,

All the celebrities listed at this fundraiser are "c-" level actors. YIKES!
What's going on here???
BTW -- there is a reason why celebrities are democrats vs wealthy business men -- celebs are all overpaid. They can make $15MILL for doing 3 months work. The work they do is no more difficult than
a lawyer or doctor or architect and so on. They are just FORTUNATE to be in a business that is
extremely lucrative and demand that they get their "cut". This quick, montrous and undeserved lump sum of money makes many celebs feel guilty as thus as compelled to give money away (as they should). Business men, in particular entrepreneurs, people who take huge risks work long hours and years for NO money until their business (or if) becomes viable see the world very differently. They are
working their butts off for long periods of time and hopefully creating jobs for other people and are providing a huge service to our country, world and ecomony by that.

CEOs are highly overpaid.

And most of those businessmen are not altruists doing it for other people.

If you had a point, it wasn't at all clear.

Yet another jealous, Republican POS.

Actors get what the Republican businessmen that run the studios are willing to pay them

It's like any other business expense: cost/profit analisys.

I'm sure all the right-wing losers will be making all kinds of comments about Hollywood and celebrities. So ask yourself this:

Who are smart, creative people who've made their living with their own talent supposed to vote for?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:09 PM on 06/25/2008

Actors are just people who are vastly overpaid for their very overrated talent. Some of them happen to be terrific people anyway.

I think anyone who doesn't have to worry about money ever again, who supports a populist for president, has to be a good person on some level.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:29 AM on 06/26/2008

How can actors be overpaid?

They get what the Republican studio heads pay them.

Why don't you give the studio heads a call, and tell them how much smarter you are than them.

Get back to us, Olivia, when your name alone can rake in, at least, $50 million in one weekend. If you have a problem with how much celebrities are paid, then you have a problem with how much disposable income Americans are willing to shell out to be entertained. You could just a easily take all your entertainment budget and give it to John McCain or, better yet, do something useful with it, but you don't. Considering that America's entertainment business is one of the few industries that America actually still makes money on, you need to rethink your argument. And, just think, they do it without outsourcing all the jobs.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:00 PM on 06/26/2008

Sheesh! Lighten up on Olivia. There are many actors who openly admit that they're overpaid, so it's not like she committed some kind of sacrilege. And her real point was that even though some actors *are* incredibly wealthy, they support populist policies -- which means they clearly are not all and only about themselves.

Sir, your plane is loading. Please depart in an orderly fashion.

Just because the majority of people in the U. S. are tired of a bad economy and a horrible war, is no reason to get so snarfy. Even the republicans are getting tired of their own party.

We simply want change, and McCain has aligned himself with the status quo.
Had he kept the maverick stance, things would look a bit different.

Well people other than Americans have to live with the consequences(good and bad) of an American president, so as a citizen of the free world, Seal has a right to support an American presidential candidate! Hopefully his money will help the Illinois Senator get more votes.

It is good no TV cameras for these events. I must admit the republicans that campaigned for republicans I avoid. Didnt used to be like that, we used to say thats their private life, not my concern, but not now.. Could have been the constant hate from talk radios, orielly, savage, hannity etc. that made us choose sides, could have been this adminstration and the kissing up by our media to them , dont know but .I say bravo to dems in hollywood..Thank you
