BOSTON — The principal of a Massachusetts high school who said a group of students intentionally got pregnant stood by his comments Thursday, saying his information "was and is accurate."

In his first public statement since the controversy erupted earlier this month, Gloucester High School principal Joseph Sullivan said he does not specifically remember using the word "pact" but does not dispute it.

He said a reporter from Time magazine asked him whether access to birth control through the school's health center would have prevented the spike in pregnancies _ 17 last year, compared with the typical four.

"I told her no, because my sources had informed me that a significant number of the pregnancies, especially among the younger students, were the result of deliberate and intentional behavior," Sullivan said.

The principal said his only direct source of information about the intentional pregnancies was the former nurse practitioner at the health center. He said he also heard "verbal staff reports and student/staff chatter."

"I believe everything I told (Time) was and is accurate," he said.

In May, the two top officials at the school's health center resigned in a dispute over distribution of contraceptives. Dr. Brian Orr, medical director, and chief nurse practitioner Kim Daly supported confidentially giving contraceptives to students, but the hospital that funds the school clinic objected.

Daly did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Sullivan said he had been asked by school officials in the fishing community 30 miles north of Boston not to speak publicly. But he said he issued the three-page statement Thursday "to put to rest the notion that I am 'foggy in my memory' or that when pressed, 'my memory failed.'"

He was referring to comments by Mayor Carolyn Kirk, who has said that there is no evidence of such a pact and that Sullivan could not remember the source of his information. Sullivan said he has had no direct conversation with the mayor since the first Time story June 11.

Kirk declined Thursday to address Sullivan's statement, but she defended her own response to the controversy.

"Teenagers in Gloucester are being hunted down by the national and even international media," she said. "And if I had to do it again, I would still stand up and protect the privacy of the families and defend the city against the sensationalized and unsubstantiated reports."

The school superintendent, Christopher Farmer, did not immediately respond to an e-mail or a phone message left at his office.

Sullivan's statement was first reported in the online version of his hometown newspaper, the Gloucester Daily Times, and the principal's attorney confirmed its accuracy to The Associated Press.

Sullivan called on the "affected children" to be left alone "to deal with the consequences of their actions."

"Intense media attention needs to come to a stop, as it distorts the reality of the situation by focusing attention on the sources of information about the problem of 'children having children' instead of seeking solutions to the problem itself," he said.

Gosh, a town full of fine, upstanding Dog-fearing Americans.

All looking fer LOVE.

Desperate youth, and worthless adults.

Great combination, like peanut butter and chocolate.

"You got yer desperate youth in my parents...you got parents in my desperate youth....hey!!! tastes GREAT!!!!"

The only reason that this is a story is because the Principal came up with this "pregnancy pact" story. This sort of thing happens and has been happening for years. I attended a relative's high school graduation 30 years ago in a small West Texas community. Out of a class of about 40, there were 6 pregnant girls and a couple who already had children. I asked what the heck was going on and was told . . . there's nothing to do here on Friday nights except go to the mountains, drink beer and make babies.

This is nothing unusual and it's not new.

You're so right,, MzTexas. My 16yr. old niece got pregnant while her mom, my sister, was adamantly donating and speaking at "abstinance" forums through her local church. This was 12 years ago. Seven of my nieces young friends were actively trying for pregnancy because their other friends were getting so much attention with their babies at such an early age.
Ultimately, the result after all these years is a well loved, beautiful, well adjusted, bi-racial, fatherless child, and a niece recently graduating nursing school. She missed a big chunk of her own youth while raising her child with much family help and lessons for everyone about what's going on with their own children.
This current public reaction of surprise, shock, or outrage is laughable to me. These so called "pacts" have been going on for years in almost every community and queitly kept hidden out of shame and/or embarrassment.
So many parents are clueless of what is going on with their children. My sister, who thought of herself as the "hip church-lady" is the first to admit she missed all of what was going on with her own child while trying to educate others.

whatever happened to good home training and going to church. this was such
a reckless act, and the sad part about their action they have no idea how many
people will have to sacrifrice their time and money in order to help them. I
hope they will think hard and long before ever doing anything like this again.

I hope they go back to school find a place to worship and go on with
their lives.

The iconic photo of the pregnant one resting her/his hand atop the nauseatingly termed "Baby Bump" might be hinting at a fashion accessory people must have even if they don't know it yet. I call it the "Belly Arm Rest". Now you can saunter idly through the mall, a Starbuck's latte in one hand, the other hand resting ambiguously while definitely referencing Annie Liebowitz and her preg celeb subjects as they frame their privileged, unborn offspring for the world to be awed by. In your choice of colors. Yours now for a limited time, only $29.99.

I don't get it. Becoming pregnant was one of the worst things that could happen to a girl when I was growing up.

It's too bad they couldn't focus their efforts on study groups instead of sex story time. I also read some good commentary about this story on http://detentionslip.org. It's got tons of crazy headlines form our schools.

Where I currently live, getting pregnant is seen as a survival tactic, especially for young girls without a lot of resources, who for one reason or another cannot handle working. Instant access to food through the WIC program and the increased likelihood that they will now qualify for food stamps. Pregnant girls also get reduced housing, heating and immediate healthcare, and often free dental work if it is determined that any dental problems may harm the baby's health as well. A lot of these girls have not seen a doctor or dentist in years. Most of these girls have some useless guy attached to them that they do not admit having a realtionship with, but the guy moves into the free or reduced housing and eats all of the WIC food or trades it for booze. It's disgusting. Sometimes families encourage the daughters to get pregnant so that they all live together and pool all of the free benefits that they can get. Parents on some kind of bogus disability and or SSI, daughters on "baby benefits," ADD diagnosed sons getting "crazy checks." A lot of people actually live like that. The poor babies, they never even have a chance!

Your narrative is right up there with Ronald Reagan's lies about the welfare queen driving her Cadillac to pick up her welfare check while wearing a mink coat.

What BULL$**T !!!!

Well, Mr. Sullivan, guess you should have used some discretion in speaking with the reporter from Time. And Mayor Kirk should have thought twice about having that press conference. There are times when a simple "no comment" is appropriate and serves to protect privacy rights. Too late now folks--the circus has come to town.
