Britney: A Second Chance At VMA Glory?

LOS ANGELES — MTV isn't ruling out giving viewers more Britney Spears at this year's Video Music Awards. "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, playfully told The Associated Press during a telephone interview Friday. When asked if he was just joking, Toffler said "sorta."

"Who knows?" he said.

Spears' out-of-it "Gimme More" comeback performance during last year's MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas was one of the most-talked televised moments of 2007. The drama-filled VMAs drew 7.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Another Spears redux could equal even more eyeballs.

"I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show," said Toffler. "We are working on it every minute of every day."

This year's MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Sept. 7. (MTV and Paramount are corporate cousins within Viacom Inc.)

Toffler said the award show's performances will occur on the lot's various sound stages, rooftops and faux city streets.

"The backlot gives us versatility," said Toffler. "You can do street performances, on-top-of-building performances, on-the-side-of-a-building performances, inside-of-a-studio performances, so we're pretty excited."

You want an opening act for MTV? How's about that pair from the Irish film 'Once'. Some actual music instead of choreographed karaoke. Their names are Hansard and Orglova, i believe. But then again, its been a very VERY long time that MTV has actually been about the music.

Using the word "glory" in conjunction with that station's video music awards is an oxymoron. I'm sure George Washington, George Patton and Douglas MacArthur would be envious of Britney because they never had a chance to receive one of those coveted doorstops on national television.

Britney has not earned the opening act to ANYTHING . . . that is an honor that should be given to someone outstanding in their achievements, and popular with the fan base. . . . this is NOT Britney.

However, I do think she deserves a second chance . . . but she needs to work her way back, like any other fallen star. Make her work for it, or she will end up in the same place she was before.

The humility pill is hard to swallow . . . does she have what it takes? Time will tell.

I don't know what is more pathetic, MTV for "giving her another chance" or watching this train wreck of person simply destroy what dignity she has left. She or others around her built her career on her looks, sex and youth, and now that she is turning into a larger, older and average looking (stretch) person with no singing abilities. What's left?

Note to Britney: Arrive in Las Vegas two weeks early. Spend 16 hours a day in rehearsal. Get a costume that doesn't accentuate your love handles. And make a special song just for the occasion so you can have a number 1 hit without recycling old material.

This is a win-win situation for the show. If she does alright, then it is a comeback. If she fails and makes another fool of herself, it is good ratings. Trash always gets the entertainment waste plant up and running.

Exactly. Personally if I "own" the show, I feed her oxys and banana splits right up to showtime. If I am a compassionate human, I try to help her with a comeback as she really does have talent. One wonders what Hollywood will do.
