Hancock Reviews

The first reviews of "Hancock" (released July 1) are out and while the critics are leaning towards thumbs down, one thing is clear: Will Smith has been able to rescue Hollywood from mid-summer doldrums before, and he will probably do it again. The movie stars Smith as a drunk curmudgeonly superhero, Jason Bateman as an altruistic PR agent, and Charlize Theron as eye candy.

Here's the roundup.

Variety breaks the ice with a high-falutin' assessment in its "Hancock" review:

An intriguing high concept is undermined by low-grade dramaturgy in "Hancock." This misguided attempt to wring a novel twist on the superhero genre has a certain whiff of "The Last Action Hero" about it, with Will Smith playing an indestructible crime-buster in a pointedly real-world context. Although it will inevitably open very large, this odd and perplexing aspiring tentpole will provide a real test of Smith's box office invincibility.

The NY Post "Hancock" review is brutal, titled "Stuporman!" and talks about how rough the film is for a family film:

[Smith's Hanock] doesn't give a rat's rear about political correctness. He also throws around the F-word, calls women the B-word and uses a slur similar to the one that got Isaiah Washington kicked off "Grey's Anatomy."

The Hollywood Reporter saves its breath in its "Hancock" review, saying "Great concept, shaky execution." It adds, on a slight up-note:

The visual effects are stellar, but the true star is Smith, who again demonstrates acting chops as well as effortless charisma in a vehicle that's only occasionally worthy of his superhuman skills.

Fox News' "Hancock" review is rather unimpressed, and borderline mean:

"Hancock," with which Sony is hoping to have a merry July 4, 2008, may not duplicate Smith's previous successes. It is one of the worst family holiday weekend releases of recent memory -- and jaw-droppingly so. And that's hard to do, since it clocks in at a mere wisp of one hour and 20 minutes.

For its part, New York mag picks up on Variety's mention of "The Last Action Hero," and notes just how apt the analogy may be:

As you'll recall, 1993's terrible LAH heralded not just the end of Arnold Schwarzenegger's box-office winning streak, but also the end of the specific type of action movie it parodied. If Hancock is really as bad as it sounds, could it spell doom not only for Will Smith's sure-thing status, but also the superhero film as a genre?

Roger Ebert is characteristically sunny in his "Hancock" Review:

I have been waiting for this for years: a superhero movie where the actions of the superheroes have consequences in the real world. They always leave a wake of crashed cars, bursting fire hydrants, exploding gas stations and toppling bridges behind them and never go back to clean up. But John Hancock, the hero of "Hancock," doesn't get away with anything.

The Salt Lake Tribune brings the pendulum swing back to thumbs down for its "Hancock" Review:

"Hancock" is a mess, a seven-car pile-up of conflicting ideas and storylines, overloaded with effects and painted with an unappetizing layer of handheld-camera grit.

In its "Hancock" Review, The L.A. Times gives the movie some initial credit, before slamming it as a dud:

"Hancock," the new Will Smith vehicle, asks ... smart questions, but after initial moments of success its answers get dumb and dumber. It's a strange feeling to see the summer's most promising premise self-destruct into something bizarre and unsatisfying, but that is the "Hancock" experience.

So far, Rotten Tomatoes has given "Hancock" a 30 percent rating, which is actually worse than "The Last Action Hero," which got 33 percent. The Telegraph's "Hancock" review calls it "hugely disappointing." Aint It Cool has four readers' "Hancock" reviews, and they run the gamut. As the Movie Moron's Hancock Review roundup put it, "they'll probably make Will Smith want to get drunk."

The first reviews of "Hancock" (released July 1) are out and while the critics are leaning towards thumbs down, one thing is clear: Will Smith has been able to rescue Hollywood from mid-summer doldrum...

I saw it last night. It's really bad. If Smith wasn't in it, it wouldn't be getting ANY attention. The reviews that say "promising premise, execrable execution" really spell out my feelings. So much promise wasted. It could have been a franchise, with sequels, comics, all kinds of merchandise. Instead, it will fade within the first couple of weeks of its release. I like Smith and his movies. Don't like Scientology, but whatever: I don't have an ideological litmus test for my entertainers. But this was a terrible flick.

I'm baffled by the bad reviews. Saw this last night and I was blown away. And I'm not usually a fan of action movies.

It's smart, raw, funny, and has a great plot twist. Is it conventional? No. Does it defy expectations? Yes.

Go, you'll have a great time.

The only thing I dont like about Will is he is a bit of a hypocrite.

He says he wont curse in his rap songs because it will embarrass his family and he wants to be positive.

Then he stars in movies where he's shooting people and cursing up a storm. I guess violence is OK so long as the kids can actually SEE it and not just HEAR it.

OK WILL ...WHATEVER

Unfortunately, the audience who will go to see Will Smith movies have no discernable taste. Therefore Rotten Tomatoes's 30% notwhithstanding, it'll make money. Depressing , but true.

I have an clean record: I have never ever paid money to see a WIll Smith movie :) The only one i've seen is 6 Degrees of Separation, on TV.

There's a poll out there- "What's your favorite Will Smith movie?"

I then realized that I don't go to movies because Will Smith is in them- and I certainly avoid music or talk show appearances by him.

Not my cup of tea- he annoys me, even more so standing in a line with Tom Cruise and Kelly Barbarino Preston.

He plays one role, and it's been done better- a lot better.

I just can’t stand Will Smith. Every movie of his always portrays him as our HERO, with super human abilities. He is becoming the new Steven Segal, which I also hate. Will Smith reminds me of the bully back in high school who’s always slapping people around and mocking everyone. He think he’s king sk*t. What a contrast in class between Will and Denzel.

Hater in the house!

Look, if you don't like Will Smith movies, that's completely understandable - but "HATE" him? Is it really that serious? What did he do to you personally to make you "hate" him? Get a grip.

ever since will smith stated that scientology's teachings are similar to the bible and also started giving his production crew "personality tests" coupon, i am not interested in watching any of his movies.

I'll be laughing when the unrated director's cut comes out and unsuspecting families who pop the disc in for the kiddies and walk away discover why the movie was originally titled "Tonight, He Comes."

".......In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so...." -Anton EGO

The quote is the farcical self-examination of an animated critic. Something that will never occur in a real three dimensional world. The point of the post is that IT IS ENTERTAINMENT. Entertainment by definition is human distraction. Therefore giving serious credence to someone who you, as a reader, may not intersect with in terms of your world view, your intellect, morally, culturally is a damn waste of time.

Enjoy the Passive pursuits that your station has accorded: See Your movie, Listen to Your music, Eat at Your favorite restaurant. But when you're done get your ass up and be about the business of engaging in the process and making you and your families lives better. Hopefully by doing so you improve the landscape for those you will never know.

I give up on Will Smith after I am Legend but I am quite sure he don't give a rats about what I have to say about him.

About 99% of Hollywood's productions are just plain unadulterated crap. This movie is obviously no exception. With regards to the cinema, the American public by and large, behaves like a pig at a trough -that is, passively consuming any swill that is thrown its way.
One hopes that an active and intelligent use of the internet will ultimately lead more and more people all over the globe to recover and develop their own sovereign taste where entertainment and culture are concerned-as is now being accomplished in the realm of electoral politics.
That will ultimately free them from that pernicious and stultifying blitzkrieg of banality, repetitious mindlessness and celebrity worship that is Hollywood.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the Hollywood output is crap. Not that I'm a snob. I can enjoy a blockbuster as much as anyone. It's just few are any good. The real problem is crap sells.

The reason why movies are questionable is because everybody from the producers to the director to the stars to the production assistants have their ideas on how to improve the script, and then blame the writer for the thing tanking because all those additional cooks spoiled the broth, all in name of making it commercial. They've developed metrics for a script, timing to the exact page when plot points are to happen and how many jokes there are per page and so forth. This is because the Guardians Of The Money (anyone standing between the writer and his paycheck) are either illiterate business school graduates or failed writers looking to avenge themselves on those with talent.
