NEW YORK — Phil Griffin, the NBC News executive who oversees MSNBC, is a coiled mass of energy who needs little provocation to do battle. Now he's got something to fight for.

MSNBC is a player in the cable news competition in a way it hasn't been before. The surge in viewership created by the presidential campaign has benefited MSNBC more than Fox News Channel or CNN, and Griffin is pushing to consolidate those gains.

Round-the-clock political talk is planned for the Democratic and Republican national conventions later this summer. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann will be the prime-time ringmasters working on outdoor sets in St. Paul and Denver, as opposed to booths in the convention halls. Joe Scarborough's "Morning Joe" will likely originate from a diner.

Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell _ the kind of NBC News star power that once kept MSNBC at arm's length _ will all play prominent roles.

MSNBC is competing hard in the sloganeering game, too. While CNN claims "the best political team on television" and Fox is "America's election headquarters," MSNBC is the "place for politics."

MSNBC specifically targets new viewers to cable news, in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic most attractive to advertisers. Fox and CNN have wider leads when all viewers are counted, but MSNBC is competitive among the younger viewers.

During the first three weeks of June, MSNBC's prime-time weeknight audience was up 85 percent over last year within that group, according to Nielsen Media Research. CNN was up 29 percent and Fox was down 1 percent during the same period. MSNBC was within striking distance, fewer than 10,000 viewers on average, of second-place CNN.

Advertisers have taken notice of MSNBC's gains, said Andy Donchin, an analyst for the media buying firm Carat USA.

Story continues below

"They're not at CNN and Fox's level yet," Donchin said. "But I think they've made greater inroads. They've gotten their act together a bit and found a formula that works for them."

For the first time, MSNBC has everyone at NBC News behind the network and believing in it, Griffin said. That's partly explained by the simple move of MSNBC's studios from Secaucus, N.J., to NBC's headquarters at Rockefeller Center in New York.

The late Tim Russert played a key role in signaling an acceptance of MSNBC by starting to make more appearances there a year or two ago, Griffin said. That wasn't necessarily a priority at NBC News during years when MSNBC seemed without a direction.

"There was a sensibility here that 30 Rock was the major leagues," he said. "Cable is fine but it was sort of kids playing in Secaucus. I think everyone knows that MSNBC is a player and a platform for NBC News editorially and financially."

Management erred in years past by trying to be all things to all people, he said. Now MSNBC is "a little smarter, a little edgier, a little more honest."

And maybe a little more liberal. Griffin resists the idea that MSNBC is positioning itself as the go-to network for the left, in much the same way as Fox is the network of choice for many conservatives. Still, its breakout show is hosted by the virulently anti-administration Olbermann, who's made no secret of his admiration for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

CNN plays to that image with an advertising campaign that portrays itself as the "independent thinker."

"The difference I see in MSNBC is that it used to cling to the idea of `just the facts, ma'am' for all of its broadcasts," said veteran news executive Richard Wald, now a Columbia University professor. "Now it's gotten into much more edge and a much more aggressive kind of talk rather than reporting."

That hasn't been a completely smooth transition. Hillary Clinton's campaign was not happy with Matthews and Olbermann for some of their commentary, and the White House delivered a broadside against Olbermann. The old-school Brokaw has also pushed back against Olbermann on the air for some remarks he thought went too far.

It's a sensible business decision, Wald said. He compared cable television today to radio in the years after television took over. To survive, radio stations needed to appeal to different niches of the listenership.

"The problem is that it narrows the possibility of understanding something," he said. "What you lose as you become niche-ified, if that's a word, is serendipity. You can watch one of these programs and never be surprised by something that you didn't know before."

Another concern: Nov. 5, 2008.

This election will end. That will be a problem for all of the cable news networks heavily covering the campaign, but more so for an organization promising 20 hours of live political coverage each day during the conventions (plus four hours of repeats in the middle of the night).

Griffin said there will still be a great deal of interest as a new administration takes over government.

He also sees a difference between now and past big news events that caused a bump in viewership that ended when the story ended. MSNBC's strong June ratings, during a relative lull in the campaign, proves his point, he said.

"We have a loyal audience," he said. "We never had a loyal audience."

I started watching MSNBC more because of Keith Olbermann. He's just awesome!! I rush home from work almost everyday to catch his program.

If MSNBC overhauled their weekend format, I think they would become more competitive. Also they should extend their news coverage and add a few more shows. For weeknights, MSNBC needs to go back to news coverage or add another show for the 8pm PST/11pm EST slot. All of those Lockdown documentaries decreases MSNBC's credibility as a competitive news source.

Olbermann is the only reason that MSNBC has grown as much as it has and Fixed Noise has lost as many viewers as it has.

The reason MSNBC has grown so much is because the democratic primary season lasted so long and they spent all their time reporting only on all things Obama and Clinton. Once the election is over MSNBC's ratings will slide back down and Olbermann will assume his rightful place as just another loudmouth talking head and will continue to preach to the choir.

Rachel Maddow is about the best thing to come along since................Olbermann! She truly deserves her own show. Although she is certainly a "Liberal," she seems willing to listen to and intelligently discuss differences.....without drooling on herself----like Matthews....or showing her biases and anger like Buchanan....or apologizing for the Chimp-In-Chief like Scarborough. Unlike Mika B., a simple kind of "yes-girl" to Scarboriugh.....Maddow has opinions....expresses them with surprising clarity, and really doesn't suffer fools. I know she is doing quite well now....but I think she will become a star in her field. I would LOVE to see her replace Matthews....or why not Russert?

If CNN wants to hold on to that independent mantra, it should consider:

1) not habitually hiring old Bush Surrogates like Snow and Townsend
2) not inviting McCain surrogates like Alex Castellanos onto their programming without disclosing his campaign ties.

Go Keith! Go Dan! Give Rachel Maddow her own Show! Bring back STEPHANIE MILLER!

And don't forget 3) Getting rid of some of the 17 hours of Wolf Blitzer, who is the most boring and horrible reporter on that disgusting network!

I watch MSNBC, almost exclusively now, except when I cannot tolerate Joe Scarborough. Then I try to watch C-SPAN! I rarely watch CNN anymore. It has become almost unbearable lately.

Olbermann is awesome. Chuck Todd is awesome.

Does anyone watch Dan Abrams?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:12 PM on 07/01/2008

The only MUST WATCH for me on MSNBC is Keith Olbermann. I hope that MSNBC recognizes that KO is the draw. And while we are at it, if they were serious about consolidating they would completely revamp their weekend line-up. No way can you have a station devoted to politics and then completely abandon us on the weekends. Do something about your on-air talents as well. They try too hard and are too damn annoying. They remind of Rick Sanchez in that they become too involved in the stories they tell. It is not about them. You have also blurred the line between news and commentary. Keith is commentary. Dan Abrams and Tweety Bird are commentaries. The on-air personalities during the days must be about news and less (personality ) commentary. More people of color and more women in the evenings. Less Andrea Mitchell and David Gregory.

I agree, only I would like less Dan Abrams, as well. I find him extremely irritating, although there is no one as irritating as Rick Sanchez! i don't understand how that moron has a broadcasting job!!!

I love it. I hope that Brokaw don't tie Olbermann's hands any because if he does, he's going to lose a lot of that newfound audience. Keith is the one most people want to hear anyway. He tells the truth. All those "females" in the afternoon are one and the same. I don't pay them any attention because they act just like the regular msm talking heads stirring up controversies.

I like Chris Matthews sometimes but he, too, tends to get caught up in the "talking head" symdrome. The night crew at 5 until is definitely the best crew. They need to rearrange the day crew from being so monotonous.

Brokaw should go back into retirement!!!

Matthews is OK in small doses, but don't trust him. Never trust him! He can turn on a dime!!!

YES! And give him that 7:pm slot which is a duplicate of Chris' 5:pm slot. They would definitely be the NO. 1 station over all of them then. YES, YES, YES!

I have one bone to pick with MSNBC. Get that irritating Mika and Joe Scarborough off the main menu. Things will be hunky dory if they do that. .

It would also help to get rid of Mathews. Even MSNBC is really not that liberal. The 4PM Pacific/7PM Eastern time slot is a good example of the whole cable news fiasco. Chris Mathews, Larry Kudlow, Lou Dobbs, Glen Beck and Shepard Smith are all on and either right wing or extreme right wing. The Fox news with Shepard Smith is probably the most "fair and balanced" of this bunch as much as I hate to say it. Pretty sorry state of affairs.

You got that right. How come the repugs can have so many stations all sewn up and the dems can't even have one by themselves? Oh, the cruelty of it all.

Keith Olbermann is the best anchor on TV and CNN's Wolf is it's biggest ham!

Wolf Blitzer is to 24 hour news, the same way that William Shatner is to acting.

Rachael Maddow is great and exposes Joe and pat for the blowhards they are.

I've been watching mostly MSNBC for the past year or so, but to tell you the truth, I'm getting bored with it. They take the most controversial, divisive bit of political noise they can find on any particular day and pass it to the same old tired faces hour after hour, hyping the least relevant issues into a frenzy. At the same time, they give short shrift to Iraq and other world/domestic issues, and they never provide anything but superficial coverage of the real issues we ought to be using to measure candidates. Also they celebrate themselves way more than I can tolerate. Chris Matthews is so damned happy to be Chris Matthews, I want to wretch. I'm hungry for substance, and it's nowhere to be found.

You're right. I wondered if that was the station's format there for awhile. You have different shows but the same old boring news. That's not good. Keith was the only one with different stuff.

After Obama gets elected, MSNBC will be tasked with defending his mistakes (ala Fox/Bush) and Fox will get to play the rampaging outsiders who "told ya so".

It will be an interesting turnabout.

I'm glad MSNBC is doing well. Keith-O, Chuck Todd, David Shuster and Andrea Mitchell are outstanding. Joe Scarborough and that gadfly Pat Buchanan have got to go.

I almost only watch MSNBC and it's very good. Morning Joe is abominable though. Mika is in over her head and Joe says something interesting about once a month when he's pretending not to be a right-winger.

love Keith. I really do, but his act is wearing a little thin. It's one thing to talk truth to power as he has done amazingly over the past several years, but his show is now so lopsided that it is mirroring FoxNews. He has become an arm of the Obama campaign, which is what he has railed against in the past. He started it in the primary, which I have not yet forgiven him for. Even if his arguments are right a good portion of the time, he has lost all credibility with his constant fawning over Obama.

Scarborough is a "male chauvinist pig" and Mika is his "whipping post". He treats her with little respect if any. He exudes his superiority over Mika and makes sure she knows at all times that he's the one. He is totally disgusting to me. I hate men who think they are superior over women.
