Hotline:

Sen. Barack Obama and retired Gen. Colin Powell met privately two weeks ago in Powell's personal office in Alexandria.

Peggy Cifrino, Powell's spokeswoman, confirmed that the presumptive Democratic nominee and the retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff chatted June 18, one-on-one for about an hour at the Armed Forces Benefit Association, where Powell rents space.

"Just an informal conversation," Cifrino told On Call.

"There's no looming endorsement," she added. "They came to talk about issues."

Gen.Powell, I could have admired you so much more, had you resigned from the Bush administration.

Gen. Powell was a military man, who honours foremost the military code - which is why he made it to the very top as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. As a military man, you do not take any actions against your Commander In Chief - whether he is right or wrong. That's just how it is.
So I, for one, disagree with you - and do instead respect Colin Powell more for not resigning!
America needs more people like him.

Other than Powell's abandonment of the high ground (he should have resigned rather than perjure himself: honor trumps loyalty ) in his using phony facts to sell the Iraq intervention to the U.N. I think his cabinet performance was otherwise the ONE ray of competence in the Bush administration. If Obama wanted to be a for real uniter this man would make great choice again as Sec. of State. I think it might be a mistake to campaign on this, but I think it would be good for the country if it happened.

Follow up. Quote from Voltaire: "A minister of state is excusable for the harm he does when the helm of government has forced his hand in a storm; but in the calm he is guilty of all the good he does not do." Give him a chance to redeem himself.

Colin Powell already left the far right. After watching it commit treason and create a fraudulent preemption, it was a no-brainer. McBush is more of the same lethal Likud/Corporate game play and anyone in their right mind wouldn't give him the time of day.

For his own sake, I hope Powell turned states evidence and would appear wherever trials for war crimes and crimes against the U.S. take place. I hope he still has the right stuff and recalls his oath of office.

Powell endorsing Obama is the LAST thing the GOP wants, it would be a huge blow to their talking points. Powell would be a "validator" for Obama when it came to foreign policy

Even though you are correct in your observation, I am still so disappointed at Powell for his collaboration with the George W. Bush March to War with Iraq.

At this time I'd ask Powell: "Would you consider giving Obama your endorsement if he was white, given you have been a Republican all these years?" --Honestly, I doubt you would.

I hope Powell endorses Obama. Even though I hate the guy for lying us into war, Republicans love him, and an endorsement by him for Obama would really look bad for McCain. Hopefully he makes right his mistake by helping to elect the man who opposed the invasion from its mention.

Powells endorsement takes National Security off the table for McCain.

And since Powell performed so admiralbly before the UN, what does his endorsement bring to the table?

If not for the fact that General Powell aligned himself with such a miserable administration, I daresay, that his career would be in the stratosphere at this point. I still greatly respect him, but feel he's "damaged goods."

I agree. Sadly, Gen Powell was a part of the lies, distortions, and half truths
that put the USA in the unnecessary war of choice in Iraq. He has NO credibility
at all. His endorsement of Obama will cost Obama votes.

Choosing Powell will gain him NOTHING in the race for the whitehouse, nothing.

Powell won't be on the ticket - besides being a Republican, he doesn't want to be in or near the White House.

I used to admire Powell - then the Bush administration and the Iraq mess changed that. I'm not sure what happened to him and how he went so far astray. Perhaps he will write a book someday. But he has a world of experienece and advice from him would be beneficial. Has McCain been to see him?

I like Powell and always have. I think he did make a mistake when it comes to Iraq and sticking with Bush, but I think he's a decent guy...and if he does endorse Obama, I think it proves he's a decent guy!

I'm a long-time admirerer of Colin Powell and admire his intelligence and integrity. It will be quite a feat if he endorses Obama. . .and Obama makes him the Secretary of Defense!

Obviously, if Powell has not endorsed McCain at this point ---- the country knows "what time it is".

Powell can literally not endorse anyone. At this point, the voters KNOW Powell's mindset.

I would regain a large chunk of respect lost on Powell if he would decide to take a stand here

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:59 PM on 07/01/2008

That has never been Powell's style. He would do well to not endorse anyone, but offer his services, however the next president sees fit.

It should become his style, because his current "style" had him at the UN knowingly dishing lies for the Bush admin. and humiliating himself.
