CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A tearful Christie Brinkley testified at her divorce trial Thursday that she was devastated by her husband's affair with a teenager and his attempts to find other paramours through pornographic Web sites.

"My world was completely shattered," the former Sports Illustrated model said. "My life as I knew it had vanished."

Brinkley took the stand in state Supreme Court a day after the trial opened with testimony from her architect-husband, Peter Cook, and his former mistress, Diana Bianchi, who was 18 when she began seeing him. Brinkley and Cook are mainly arguing over custody of their children, ages 10 and 13.

Brinkley said she learned about the betrayal when Bianchi's stepfather tapped her on the shoulder after she spoke at a Southampton High School graduation in June 2006.

"That husband of yours won't knock it off. He's having an affair with my teenage daughter," said the stepfather, Brian Platt, a Southampton Village police officer who testified to the same thing Wednesday.

Brinkley said she looked at Cook, sitting in the front row at the graduation. When he shook his head in denial before she even confronted him with the allegation, she thought: "My God, it's true. He did do that."

Cook initially denied the liaison, but he has since apologized and argues it should not disqualify him from getting custody of his children. He testified Wednesday that he gave Bianchi a $300,000 payoff, had trysts with her in his office and Brinkley's Hamptons homes and spent thousands of dollars on online porn.

Brinkley said after learning of his cheating she told him to give his computer passwords to her "if you've got nothing to hide" and found e-mails from Bianchi and porn sites he had visited. He was trying "to connect with people" in their neighborhood, she said.

Story continues below

"It was not a voyeur site. It was a meeting site," she said. "It was more than I could bear."

Cook, who testified that Bianchi was his only extramarital lover, said he and Brinkley used pornography "to get the mood going" during the last half of their 10-year marriage.

Brinkley said that before she learned of the affair, the marriage's biggest problem was Cook's relationship with Alexa Ray Joel, her daughter with "Piano Man" singer Billy Joel.

Cook constantly picked on her daughter for the slightest things, she said, echoing Alexa Joel's testimony Wednesday.

"You married me and my children," Brinkley said she would tell Cook. "You've got to find a way to love Alexa."

Alexa Joel, 22, testified that Cook treated her well before he married her mother but criticized her constantly afterward. She said he called her out for chewing loudly, complained about her piano playing and once shoved her head into a bucket of water while demanding she clean up a plumbing leak caused by her lengthy shower.

Cook denied Joel's account when he returned to the stand Thursday, saying he had "absolutely not" pushed her into the bucket. He said he tried to stop her "loud, aggressive" piano playing only when his and Brinkley's younger children were going to bed and was only backing up Brinkley's own admonishments about her daughter's chewing and protracted showers.

Cook's lawyer tried to portray Brinkley's testimony as courtroom theater.

"If you want to call me an actress, that's fine," Brinkley replied.

"I'm no Meryl Streep, but I have been in a very successful movie," she said with a sheepish smile while referring to 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation."

"Thirty years later, it's still got legs," she said.

Brinkley, 54, and Cook, 49, wed in 1996. She filed for divorce a decade later after his affair with Bianchi became a tabloid scandal.

Not on the Huffington Post! We don't need these articles. We don't want these articles. I will not read these articles. We expect better than your writing about the drama of models. Save this stuff for the Enquirer.

Hey if a guy is married to a beautiful woman like Christie but still is somehow compelled to spend $3,000 a month on porn then it is fair game to be analyzed under depth psychology or demon possession or something. That seems appropriate on HuffBlow. Politics itself in human history certainly comes under the purview of depth psychology and demon possession. Eliot Spitzer's behavior is veritable one stop shopping on the psychological issues spectrum in play too.

WTF is wrong with the human race?

This is a fair question.

Christie's "Pilgrim Belt" in that photo may give clue. Calling C.G. Jung. Stat.

Marry in haste, repent at leisure. Didn't she marry him after only a few months? Not a good idea. A leopard will show his spots early on and that's the time to ditch him quickly.

i was at a restaurant a few years back on columbus avenue (papardella) and was sitting at a table outside across from ms. brinkley (then mrs. joel) and her party....

a young girl went up to her table very politely and asked for an autograph...the rebuke to this this young girl from ms. brinkley was so cold and so heartless that we all booed her right then and there...

coincidentally, i had occasion not long afterwards to see billy joel at a springsteen concert at nassau coliseum and his interaction with the fans was the polar opposite of his then wife - he was gracious, friendly and very humble...

They seem to have all deserved each other-Brinkley, Cook, and the girlfriend. the kids didn't deserve any of them...but, ya can't pick your parents. All you can do, is remove yourself from them ASAP when you come of age.

I've never ever liked this woman and have a very hard time feeling even empathy for he. That said, I still don't get the step-father's urgency to spill at not only a HS graduation, but one in which he knew Christy Brinkley would be speaking. What's that about? Again, why must then have been the time and place to reveal the affair?

Call me jaded, but I have to wonder if he was acting from a parental standpoint, or from the standpoint of a man with his own issues with Lolita.

Please, lets not pretend it doesn't happen.

Christie Brinkley is like a little child. Who exactly forced her to marry this guy? This whole sordid mess is just another example of what eventually happens to all relationships that are based almost entirely on sexual attraction and nothing else. Two extreme narcissists can't be happy together forever?-what a shock.

She is working on marriage number 5. It appears that there is not one man in the entire country that can keep Christie Brinkley happy for any extended period of time, or if there are, she doesn't want any of them, she only seeks out trouble. She should finally grow up and take some responsibility for her choices in life.

I love this guy Cook. His wife is 54. At a certain point, a man has to look elsewhere for fulfillment. Old women are NOT attractive despite what Oprah and Cosmo tells you. Older men, on the other hand, are more attractive to younger women. So it's a natural union that should be celebrated and not ostracized

The beauty of plastic surgery has benefitted Demi Moore greatly. Just wait until she starts to look her age and Ashton sees that younger tail passing him by. He'll break camp in no time. Older women are great, especially if it's for things such as financial security and their experience in the bedroom. After a while though, you got to throw away the old bag.

Just last week, I read the book Girls Like Us, which chronicles the overlapping professional and personal lives of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. Must be something about famous, accomplished, rich celebrity-type women. Between the three of them they were involved with, and often married, a pack of miscreants that would make your head spin. BTW - skip the read unless your fanship is unshakable. Esp. as to King.

Poor Poor Christie, she really loves the spotlight, and doesn't seem to mind the hurt that the younger children must be feeling.

I just can't feel sorry for HER. People make bad choices in life, that's for sure, but C'mon Christie, this is round number 5 for you. She loves the sympathy of others. Please Christie, tell us again about that ONE movie you made. Get over yourself.

Imagine being worth a couple of hundred million dollars. Now, imagine being one of the most famous models (and sex symbols) that ever lived. Now, how hard do you think it would be to find a man who loved you for YOU and not for your money or the "trophy" that you would be for him?

I can't believe all the excuses people are making for this guy. And blaming the wife? How old-fashioned!

Apparently things were fine until he got to his mid-forties, then decided to have sex with an 18 year old, solicit sex in the neighborhood on the internet--meanwhile (1) spending $300,000 of their money on paying the teen to be quiet and (2) spending $3000 of their money, secretly, on porn.

I can't believe the amount of sympathy for this guy here.

Whatever he wanted to do sexually, a decent man would have SEPARATED from his wife before doing it. Marriage is all about trust. Cook obviously wasn't dissatisfied enough with his marriage to actually..you know..have the decency to END it before betraying her trust with teenage lovers, porn and sexual solicitations of others.

No sympathy for him from me.

Of COURSE there is endless "sympathy," rather than moral seriousness, in the Boomer responses to this latest Boomer media fiasco. And of COURSE, Boomer Christie wanted 15 more minutes of fame at no matter what cost to her dignity and the suffering of her mere kids. The self-indulgence of the Boomers is simply bottomless. Fortunately, Obama personifies the way that Gen-X is determined to bring adulthood and decency back into fashion in this country so debased by Boomer narcissism. Sure, they started the Sixties with Freedom Rides and idealism, but they ended the Sixties as the most spoiled, drug-addled, immature, self-centered generation in American history, by FAR. Time for this shameless generational spectacle of Bill and Monica, Peter and Christie, and all the rest of these adult children to end.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:39 AM on 07/04/2008

You know, not everything (if, indeed, much) can be rationally explained by a presumed generational disjunct--certainly not the invisible mechanisms of a failed marriage between a mental adolescent and a marginal "celebrity' whose current claim to notoriety is reduced to 3 a.m. Total Gym commercials with Chuck Norris.

Discount sociology is still subject to the logical caution against reasoning from the specific to the general. Listening to testimony in this case isn't goint to explain anything about the differences between the generation you so obviously need to demonize and the one you so obviously need to elevate. There is no sociological relevance to this "morality tale" devoid of virtue.

Maybe she really finds his affair with a minor -- spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of the family's money -- and soliciting neighbors on the internet for sex....genuinely sleazy?

Maybe she really doesn't think he DESERVES joint custody of a 10 and 12 year old, and would be an unwholesome--even harmful--influence on them?

The redeeming thing about getting older is acquiring some wisdom. One thing I have learned about people is that they are consistent. Even if a guy professes to love you, watch how he treats others, including animals and children. If he is not nice to them, he won't be nice to you. Period. Christie should have run like the wind the second he wasn't nice to Alexa. The bucket incident was just a warning of and the warm-up to the nightmare he was crafting for Christie.

Yes, it is a sobering thought that even somebody as beautiful (and rich) as Brinkley can't find a decent husband, at least not via the methods she used.

Both men and women should demand respect ( and be obligated to behave in a way that merits respect) from their spouses. To marry in haste and hope for the best is a HUGE mistake, especially when there are kids involved.

How is it possible to avoid making mistakes? By definition human beings are flawed. If you expect your mate to be perfect then you are guaranteed to be disappointed. The fact is the male/female dynamic is all about procreation and raising children. After that function is satisfied, things are bound to get complicated.
