WASHINGTON — Moving from celebrity to senator isn't exactly an untraveled path. But that doesn't mean comedian Al Franken, who is vying for a Senate seat in Minnesota, will coast to Capitol Hill on a wide, smooth road.

Franken, a Democrat, best-selling author and former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, once penned a racy piece for Playboy that has offended the Midwestern sensibilities of some Minnesotans. It is that history as a satirist and comedian, Franken says, that puts him "in a little uncharted territory" as he tries to woo voters.

At his nomination speech a few weeks ago, Franken acknowledged that some of his past writings and comments were "downright offensive."

"There were some things that I said that gave some people reason to believe I wouldn't fight for all Minnesotans, specifically for women," Franken said in a telephone interview. "I said I was sorry for that, 'cause that's not who I am."

If he can overcome his past, colorful commentary, Franken would join a long list of entertainers who have found a second or third career in elected office, most notably former President Reagan. They include:

_Helen Gahagan Douglas, a 1930s actress and opera singer who was a Democratic congresswoman before losing the 1950 California Senate race to Richard Nixon in a landslide. In that race, the future president called her "pink right down to her underwear" and earned the nickname "Tricky Dick."

_Tough-guy actor and director Clint Eastwood, who became mayor of Carmel, Calif.

_Fred Grandy, Gopher on the TV show "The Love Boat," who became a Republican congressman from Iowa.

Story continues below

_Sonny Bono, of "Sonny and Cher" fame, a Republican who became mayor of Palm Springs, Calif., and then a California congressman.

_Ben Jones, who played the mechanic Cooter on the TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard" before winning a congressional seat from Georgia as a Democrat.

_Jesse Ventura, a professional wrestler and actor who served one term as Reform Party governor of Minnesota.

_Movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger, now Republican governor of California.

_Song-and-dance actor George Murphy, a Republican senator from California in the 1960s.

_Fred Thompson, a congressional staffer who became an actor and then a Republican senator from Tennessee and presidential candidate.

Also, actor Sonny Landham, who appeared in "48 Hours" and "Predator," is mounting a Libertarian challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Not all entertainers have been able to make the switch. In 1967, former child actress Shirley Temple Black, a California Republican, stressed to voters, "Little Shirley Temple is not running," but lost the congressional election anyway. The little curly haired girl went on to serve as U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

Entertainment is good preparation for politics, said Rep. John Hall, a New York Democrat who had been frontman for the band Orleans (big hit "Still the One").

"The advantage to being a performer is that I've always been the product _ I'm used to getting up in front of people and selling myself and my ideas," he said. "They may be musical or lyrical ideas, but they're ideas nonetheless."

But some of Franken's writings are a little stronger than, say, "You're still the one I want to talk to in bed," and Franken's Republican opponent, Sen. Norm Coleman, has highlighted the "Porn-O-Rama!" column Franken wrote for Playboy in 2000.

"Eight years ago I was making the streets of St. Paul safer," said Coleman, the city's former mayor, "and he was writing porn."

When Reagan ran for governor of California in 1966, his Democratic opponent, Gov. Pat Brown, also ridiculed Reagan's past career.

"While we've been building a dynamic working society in California, he was off making such film epics as 'Bedtime for Bonzo' and 'Tugboat Annie Sails Again,'" Brown said. But the strategy didn't work; Reagan won in a landslide.

By the time Reagan mounted his first successful presidential bid in 1980, he was invoking "Bedtime for Bonzo" _ which featured Reagan and a chimpanzee. Responding to hecklers at a campaign event, he said, "A little while ago they were calling out 'Bonzo.' They'd better be careful. Bonzo grew up to be King Kong."

Reagan biographer Lou Cannon said Franken has a bigger credibility hurdle to clear than Reagan did.

"Franken is a comedian, who writes these outrageous lines and books," he said. "Reagan had most recently been host of the very dignified GE Theater. I also think that Minnesota is a different political culture than California, which was welcoming to stars."

Still, Franken wouldn't be the first entertainer to win in Minnesota; the state elected Ventura governor in 1998.

Ventura said he was on a flight with Franken a couple of years ago and warned him: "If you have any ghosts in your closet, get ready, because they're going to be splattered all over the front page of the world."

"It's a shame," added Ventura, who says he's considering running against Franken and Coleman as an independent. "Take my opinion on his Playboy article _ it's irrelevant. He was asked to do a job, he's a writer, whatever it is he does. I more worry about how he will govern."

Ventura said his own celebrity status had been a boon in the '98 campaign _ "you're already a household word, so you don't have to purchase that."

Grandy had a similar take. He said his previous career on "The Love Boat" was a "secret weapon," because people thought it would be a disadvantage. In fact, it provided instant name recognition.

"It's better to start with a negative impression than none at all, because you can always turn that around," Grandy said.

He said he didn't have much show business baggage, having been on a "fairly white bread show. There was really not much there that you could call salacious or controversial."

the only politician that matters in mn is fifth district congressman keith ellison. the rest on them are so far to the right that they're not worth sending money to. i am not associated with his campaign. keith stuck up for the young muslim girls who were taken out of obama's photo-op so as not to offend bigots. they musliminas didn't matter matter to the conventional left; but they mattered to keith.

back keith if you want bob wexler- dennis kucinich liberalism in minnesota. everybody else is painfully trying to be within 0.000001 mm of he exact center. you all know that drill.

I'm a Minnesotan who's caught Al's speeches live. He's no joke. Everyone thinks he is; and few here take him serious. For those of you who don't know; which frankly I don't know how; we had a former professional wrestler as our governor. Once bitten twice shy. If you want to know who's going to win this election; take it from me it's not Al. Not because of the for mentioned candidate or the because of AL's prior occupations. The reason he's going to loose is because he's going up against a very strong foe in Norm Colmen. Norm is running on the platform that he has nothing to do with Bush or any other GOP for that matter. He's also got the street cred to back it up. He was a former Dem mayor of Saint Paul. For Al to win he has to spend lots of money and time on TV talking about solutions to all that ail us. He also needs to shake every hand he can and kiss every baby in the room. He's not doing that. I've been to many parades and festivals the kinds where pols shamelessly kiss your butt (huge here in Minnesota) no Al. Al comes off as someone who's to big and or to good for your average Pabst beer drinking Cheese Curd Eating Minnesotan. I love Al but he needs to get to work.

I live in Minnesota and guess what, he is a joke.

Any person that wants to run for Senate is a joke if they don't pay their workers comp taxes or income taxes in 17 states.

Well here in Minnesota I have seen only one Coleman bumpersticker to about a guzzilian Al Franken stickers.

That means nothing. Liberals always have more bumper stickers than conservatives.

They need them to cover up the rust spots on their cars and hold the fenders on.

I have lived in MN for 53 years and this will be my first time ever that I will write in my vote for Senator. I would never vote for Norm, but, I will NOT vote for Mr. Franken. My husband and I met him at the MN state fair last year and he acted like WE should be honored to meet him because of his celebrity status. He never asked for our vote, never engaged in conversation. We went on to meet Mike Ciresi, then a candidate for Senate....he was warm and engaging and even though I did not agree with all of his positions on issues, he still asked us for his vote. Franken, in my opinion, believes that because he is a celebrity, he should win this race easily. Not me Al, I will never vote for you. You were an ass to us and that is something people dont forget.

Tell us more about this incident where you met him. If he didn't engage in conversation, how could he possibly have asked for your vote... I'm kind of shaking my head here, trying to understand what happened.

I also have met Al Franken and he could not have been more warm and cordial. I have also followed his career with a lot of interest but it was his opening up of himself when he broadcasted on Air America radio. To hear the quiver in his voice as he spoke about meeting troops on the many CSO tours he has done in Iraq and Afghanistan was to know that this man indeed has an expansive heart beating in his chest. Luvapet, perhaps you caught him on an off day and to make such a decision based upon you felt snubbed, I think, is not wise. When voting it's better to look at the policy and philosophical difference of all the candidates. Finding a pol who is more concerned about our country and working famiies than Al is you would be hard pressed.

Dear Luvapetadopt,

I cna understand your feeling that Al isn't warm or approachable. But I have been following his campaign since he announced. And I have to say when he started this, he was really terrible at it. A year ago, he was still shy. He has no problem standing ona stage in front of a group of people, because he can forget they are individuals, and think of them as a group. But I really think he does not deal well with the loss of anonymity. I hoenstly do NOT think he's an elitist, I think it took him some time to develop his politican's legs.

I sure hope you'll give him another chance. Quite frankly, I never do anything well at first either, and after a while, i always improve. I suspect he does too.

And having followed Norm Coleman, I have to say the choice based on substance is really so so clear.

Let us not forget that, in what seems to be a direct parallel, Caligula appointed his horse to a seat in the Roman Senate. Franken could fill that same role.

First, a question for Jesse Ventura: If your worried about how a Senator governs, can you tell me what exactly a Senator governs so I can decide if I should be worried too?

Second, on Al: Al Franken and Catherine Lanpher did a live broadcast from Austin's State Theater to launch Austin's now-defunct Air America affiliate, and as a fan I found him to be gracious when he signed autographs after the show. You could tell he was exhausted, and he was doing a party fundraiser AND a panel at South By Southwest in addition to the radio show. But he signed every book, posed for pictures, and exchanged pleasantries with fans afterwards.

Even if that politeness was part of his job as a media personality, I still appreciated it. I have no problem believing that Franken will bring those same qualities to the Senate and serve Minnesota and the country with the same dedication and niceness.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:12 AM on 07/05/2008

Well, insofar as the legislature is part of the government, Senators govern in the broadest sense of that term in a democratic republic.
But even so, I was always taught that if you understood what the person meant - and I can't believe you don't understand what Ventura meant - then it's kinda boorish and pedantic to jump all over the speaker for being just slightly off the mark.
I don't know what the polls in MN are reflecting right now, but I think Franken will have a problem, because, goshdarnit, he's just not likeable enough.

It sure seems easy-
One candidate tries to make you believe you're real safe, safer than ever in your life... but if you're smart you'd better stay paranoid to keep the Boogyman away... by faithfully and unquestionally, unconditionally backing the candidate and the entire candidate's party.
The other candidate might make you feel a little uncomfortable with somethings he says are not lies, but also tries to make you laugh, THINK, and get a realistic idea of how to deal with ALL the BoogyMEN... inside and outside of our borders.
God, I wish I could vote for one of those candidates!

Read his books, especially "Lies and the Lying Liars..."

Coleman lives in a fantasy world of goofy GOPER fog, where he thinks that he can beat George Galloway in a verbal smackdown.

"Now I know that standards have slipped over the last few years in Washington, but for a lawyer, you are remarkably cavalier with any idea of justice," the MP declared. The whole room scanned Mr Coleman's face for a reaction. The senator shifted in his seat - nervously it seemed. It was the first time a British politician had been interrogated as a hostile witness at the US Senate - but Mr Galloway cast himself not as the accused, but the accuser. On stage at the heart of American power, he attacked the US-led war on Iraq and accused Washington of installing a "puppet" regime there... Galloway fights corner on accuser's home patch (independent.co.uk) George Galloway had warned he was coming to Washington to make a spirited defence of his reputation, and even before entering the US Senate he made sure to deliver one or two decent punches. Standing on the corner of Constitution and 3rd, a fresh spring breeze at his heels and a pack of television cameras in his sights, he quickly provided a taste of what was about to come. Before turning heel and marching into the committee room ready to deliver a tongue-lashing, he added one more verbal blast for good measure. "Lickspittle."

I did it was one of the funniest books I read. I laughed all the way through it. Also Rush Limpbaugh is a big fat idot was a very funny book. After I read it I sent it to my brother-in-law who loves Rush. He never said anything. He got the point. I hope the people that are looking at him will vote for Franken. Frankly the DC establishment could use some humor.

Forget the humor!

Did you people ever listen to the man on his air america radio show? Al can maintain his sense of humor and perspective, that's true, but more importantly, he is a really really smart guy who does his homework! How many senators can make THAT claim? Remember when John Conyers tells Michael Moore, "Son? We don't read most of the bills!". I think Al is the kind of patriot who would read the bills.

This is Mr. Smith goes to Washington all over again! I cannot think of a single person running for office who has me more convinced that he love shis country and wants to do a great job than Al Franken. I am appalled that there is even a suggestion that he might not win~!!!!

What a condescending, insulting headline. Al Franken is a satirist. He"s smarter than you and knows more about politics than you. Norm Coleman is a stooge who voted to Iraq and everything else he was told to vote for, but you want us to see Al Franken"s jokes in a girlie magazine as "controversial." Look at the tens of thousands dead in Iraq and tell us Coleman"s votes aren"t controversial but Franken"s are.

For crying out loud, Franken didn"t write a steamy girl-on-girl novel as Lynne Cheney did, and he didn"t write a novel of sadomasochistic Republican sex as Scooter Libby did. No falafel fantasies either. Just funny political satire.

And Franken"s ghosts"lovely family, brilliant career, brilliant mind, compassion and dedication to all that"s good about America"he"ll deal with just fine.

I understand that you wanted to write a story about a show business ninny who runs for Congress, but sometimes when you outline the clichés and plug in a name it doesn"t work. If Al were Sonny Bono or Gopher you"d have done a swell job. But you know what would have been interesting? A story about Al Franken.
