The Olympics in Beijing this summer involve a lot of drastic, last-minute facelifting for China, from smog cleanup to unusual Chinese algae collection, but the latest face involved belongs to none other than communist leader Mao Zedong and the 10 yuan note.

The currency displays Mao for now, but six million new 10 yuan bills will be released to commemorate the Olympics, sans chairman. In his place will be an image of Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.

I love the way everyone loves to dump on the Chinese when we have more than our share of problems. As if we don't have smog and pollution. As if we don't have human rights problems, (anyone remember the disproportionate number of African-American males in prison for minor drug abuses). As if we haven't illegally invaded a country and wantonly murdered tens if not hundreds of thousands of its citizens and on and on and on and on. Nice to use the Chinese as a whipping boy when we have polluted the planet more than any other nation, when we have invaded country after country and killed millions upon millions around the world for our vaunted "security.' Its enough to make one puke.

What could one buy with ten yuan? Would Mao show up in the change (if there is any)?

1 US$ = 6.8 yuan

You can get a good Chinese meal of 2 side dishes and rice or a Big Mac and change.

The Western architects (Herzog & de Meuron) should be ashamed of themselves for prostituting themselves to the communist Chinese authorities and being used for this kind of propaganda.

American cities and colleges should ban Herzog & de Meuron from ever bidding on or building public projects here. It's disgraceful.

You know what I like best about china haveing the olympics? It's the smog clean up! I hope they enjoy breathing cleaner air so much, they will realize how important it is and join the clean up year around to help stop global warming.it puts the spot light ont hem to and there is more talk about cleaning up their humanity problems to know! I didn't like this idea at first! But know I see some benefits for us all in this!

And think of what it says about their attitude towards their people, their land, and the entire planet if they revert back to the "old ways" once the Olympics is over...

Hey and what about our government's attitude to our own people, our own land and the planet we share with the rest of humanity? What about our government which is trampling on our rights, dismantling environmental protections and ignoring global warming until its too late? Hey let's encourage everyone to boycott us like we encourage everyone to boycott China. What ignorant stupidity.
