Whatever the cause -- Viagra, mid-life divorce, online dating or simple ignorance -- studies suggest that STDs are no longer just an affliction of the young. A study published last week online by the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections adds to that growing body of evidence. Researchers at England's West Midlands Health Protection Agency found that in less than a decade, STD rates had more than doubled among people ages 45 and older. And Dr. Babatunde Olowokure, an author of the study, thinks that figure may be low. "These observations are based on a small proportion of people who actually attend clinics," he says. While that proportion of the population has increased overall over the past decade, Olowokure points out that middle-aged and older people tend to delay visiting a doctor for treatment of an STD, or avoid it altogether, in large part due to the stigma associated with sexually transmitted infections.

It is because of multi partners that STD is on the rise. Sometimes the unborn child also get infected because of their selfish parents. Loose morality in a society will contribute to STD.
How do you educate your grandfather to practice safe sex by wearing condoms?

Oh get over yourself. People can have multiple partners - have safe sex and not get any STDs.

WHo are you to judge morality for others. If a consenting adult wants to have an active sex life it is no business of yours.

I agree, Eric. If consenting adults of any age want to do it, they should, as long as they're practicing safe sex.
Fanatics love to condemn others for enjoying sexual pleasure. That's why the right wingers are now claiming that birth control pills "kill" babies!

It is because of lack of knowledge that people get STDs. Simply having multiple partners does not result in STDs. Sleeping with an infected partner without proper protection can result in transmitting STDs. One the whole, this generation did not have the benefit of formalized sex education. Moreover, they haven't been the targeted demographic for sex ed/awareness over the past couple of decades and many of them have been focused on raising families. Now that they have the opportunity (and society on the whole isn't as judgmental about sexuality), they are finding themselves without vital knowledge to protect themselves.

Here's how to educate your grandfather: You get him a gross of Trojans, two big blonds and lock the three of them in a room 'till grandpa cries "Uncle"! That's the kind of "elder-abuse" my grandpa would sign up for in a New York second.

These bodies are not meant for enjoyment. Human life is for self-realization. "Athato brahma jijnasa" -- "Now that we have obtained the precious human birth, it is time to understand our spiritual identities." (Vedanta sutra, first verse.) Instead people waste their lives pursuing fleeting sex pleasure (and suffering the consequences), which is available to practically every animal species. If promiscuous sex is so much desired, one can come back in the next birth as a dog and do it shamelessly in the street with any pooch that one can find.

Tell that to the amygdala...nature seems to have different intentions for animals than pursuing a "higher" order.

Rather than moralizing about human sexuality or reacting from a purely spiritual/religious perspective, pragmatic approaches provide more immediate and tangible benefits when we're talking about the health and lives of thousands or millions. And isn't there spiritual value in that, too?

So age 45 is the "older generation?" Don't seem old to me! I thought this article was about people in their 80's

I read an article in Florida that said that there are more cases of AIDS in the (villages) than any other place in Florida....including areas with a large Haitian population. Go figure...theres no fool like an old fool.

I've been a bit surprised lately by the behaviour of a few of my recently single friends. A close friend was divorced a year ago and about 6 months ago, she started using a number of dating sites. At the moment, she's "hooking up" with 3 men but in the course of 6 months, I've lost count of the number of people she's slept with.

This woman wasn't a very attractive teen or young adult but on the secondary market, she's a woman who happily puts out and she's very popular. It's like she's reliving her teen years she didn't actually have. She has no intention of settling down and is only looking for someone who'll take her out occasionally and have sex with her I wouldn't be surprised to hear that she's contracted an STD.

I think the high rate of divorce and the rise of social networking sites have made it much easier for middle aged people to date, especially when they're just looking for fun.

My guess a direct result of ED pharmaceutical treatments available now. Back when I was younger, we used to call it "LD"
