American Tourist Gored During Pamplona Bull Run (VIDEO)

Charging bulls plowed into piles of fallen thrillseekers Wednesday, goring an American and injuring at least one other person during the annual run through the streets of Pamplona.

On the third day of the San Fermin festival, the six half-ton fighting bulls accompanied by steer stayed in a tight pack for much of the run, which makes the sprint safer.

But pile-ups of fallen runners formed at several points, and bulls plowed into at least one of them and ran over others. One man in sneakers, running shorts and a tank-top bumped into the side of bull making a sharp turn and was thrown into the air.

A bull gored 22-year-old Marcus Wolf from Bakersfield, Calif., and left him with a 5-inch (12-cm) gash in his right buttock. He underwent surgery.

The bulls are run through the streets to get them from the pasture into the bullfighting arena... Hemingway popularized the running of the bulls which is why so many people flock to San Fermin every year. Historically a few men would do the run, now every Spaniard, tourist, and his brother (and sister) runs. The six fighting bulls that run each day are all dead by the afternoon; the fights can be horrifying... but they are the national sport.

I ran last summer. It was exhiliarating. Anyone who would run in an incapacitated state is a fool and deserves a Darwin award. Unfortunately, the festival has been so over-publicized that it has certainly lost the charm that Hemingway experienced.
