CHICAGO (AP) _ Comedian Bernie Mac endured some heckling and a campaign rebuke during a surprise appearance Friday night at a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, the 50-year-old star of "The Bernie Mac Show" joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language.

"My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the difference between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?'" Mac said. "I said, I don't know, but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000.'"

As the joke continued, the punchline evoked an angry response from at least one person in the audience, who said it was offensive to women.

"It's not funny. Let's get Barack on," a man shouted from the crowd, which paid $2,300 each to support the Illinois senator.

About 15 minutes later, Obama tried to smooth things over with a joke of his own.

"We can't afford to be divided by race. We can't afford to be divided by region or by class and we can't afford to be divided by gender, which by the way, that means, Bernie, you've got to clean up your act next time," Obama said. "This is a family affair. By the way, I'm just messing with you, man."

The incident drew response from Obama's campaign, which criticized Mac for his choice of material.

"Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate," spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement after the event.

Mac, a Chicago native, said he's a longtime Obama supporter and called the presumptive Democratic nominee a "man's man" while offering him advice for the duration of the campaign trail.

"People like rumors. They're going to say things like you was at the club with Lil' Kim, and you and Kanye West got into a fist fight," he said. "You can't get upset. You've got to keep hope alive."

Mac's appearance was Obama's first celebrity event of the evening. Later at a Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama spoke to a raucous crowd of music fans, who paid up to $500 per person to see a performance by Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, and two other band members.

"Before these guys go, I want them to know that I had heard a rumor that they had suggested that I had nothing by them on my iPod," Obama said. "That is not true. I love Wilco."

Yeah! Sexism lives on...and Obama could care less. What a shock! Let's make some money at the expense of Women-Americans!

Bad column header. You people have got to be more serious with these attention grabbers. The way that you've been using them has been OFF LINE.

I know, let's all vote for the War President because of a Bernie Mac joke!

well, once again we see that a sense of humor is the first casualty of liberal politics

If guess that if you can laugh at travesties such as killing innocent Iranians, duping the entire country into an unwinnable war and commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby there is a much wider definition of "humor" available to you.

I feel I should add that this Bernie Mac incident doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Lighten up Obamabots and supporters at $2300. a person fundraiser. What I read was a joke, if it's not funny, then don't laugh, you don't have to laugh at every joke. Obama should have told the
guy when inviting him to keep anything that was not rated G out of the routine, what could have happened, he wouldn't have agreed to show up, Obama could have found someone else for comedy.

If Obama wanted everything in the routine rated G, he shouldn't have let Bernie Mack on the stage. It's not like no one's ever heard one of this routines before.

He's Bernie F*cking Mac people. If they wanted a clean and safe routine from a black man, they should've called Sinbad. Since when can we not have comedians push the envelope? And why is it anyone who is somewhat honest and controversial has to be denounced and made to apologize? I don't know if i've ever heard Bernie not at least be humorous...this kind of prudishness is why Barack must hide his principles and act like a centrist. What a shame

Just say no to misogyny, says Barack in one breath, and then "I'm just messin' with ya, man." Yeah, right.

Come on, America. He's Bernie Mac. What, you want he should turn into Casper Milquetoast all of a sudden? Get real. Better yet, get a funnybone.

I listened to a story on the radio a short time ago about a woman who hired two, young comedians to provide more "hip" entertainment at a summer camp. She told these guys that they couldn't talk about sex, or violence, or drugs, etc. and I knew, already, what would most certainly happen. So, when the narrator said that a young camper waiting for the performance was overheard cheerfully saying that he "loved Dane Cook", I felt incredible empathy for those two, poor young men stepping into the lion's den.

Needless to say, the kids booed and heckled the pair and later said that the comics were "NOT funny" while the parents and counselors cringed at and criticized the young men for telling a few, unfortunate jokes about fire breaking out at the camp. The two fledgling comics slunk away with bruised egos, one even entering into a lengthy depression and identity crisis!

With regard to Obama's fundraiser, whoever thought that having a warm-up comedian would be a good idea in the middle of a campaign that almost imploded over an innocuous reference to "bitter voters", will hopefully have learned his or her lesson!
